Townsend Makes Twelve

By Alex on June 19, 2012 at 3:31p

It has been a long wait for Buckeye fans in regards to who would be the next in the class of 2013 to commit, but Buckeye Nation finally has their answer.

In a somewhat surprising move, Urban Meyer has accepted the commitment of punter Johnny Townsend of Boone High School in Orlando, Florida. Townsend is regarded as one of the best in his trade in the country, and was recently named the top punter at the Alabama camp this summer, as well as the fourth-best punter in the nation by Kohl's Kicking Camp.

At 6-2/200 Townsend not only has good size, but his highlight reel says he can run the forty in 4.5 seconds, bench 260 lbs, and has a vertical leap of 33", meaning he has great athleticism and speed that can contribute in the special teams game.

Townsend becomes the 12th member of Ohio State's recruiting class of 2013 and stops the bleeding a bit after the Bucks saw two decommitments and a dry period in verbal pledges occur in late spring through early summer.

Things are expected to pick up in the coming months with camps underway and more prospects taking visits, but for now Buckeye fans can enjoy some good news on the recruiting front in the form of a future special teamer.

Well, there you go. We've got 'our punter' now.

Tdizzle's picture

Long live the grey box.. finally some good news.. Hope it keeps rolling.

BrewstersMillions's picture

I'll take it. I predict some people getting mad that a scholly was 'wasted' on a punter but whatever. Special Teams are a big deal to Meyer. This really shouldn't be a huge shock.

Alex's picture

plus we have no punter on the roster after this year...Buchanan graduates....Frank E or Basil can try but better safe than sorry

Northbrook's picture

It needed done and they got it done. Kid looks like a very good athlete. Good job by the Staff.

tennbuckeye19's picture

Anyone who complains about us 'wasting' a scholarship on a punter will be deemed to dead to me.

DMcDougal24's picture

Great news. And hopefully more good news tomorrow with #13 could make this a great week

Alex's picture

who are you referring to?

hodge's picture

Gibson, I think.

DMcDougal24's picture

Isn't Gibson supposed to announce tomorrow, June 20? Or is it the 24?

Alex's picture

June 20 but that has been up in the air...some rumors it may be delayed due to his offer not being committable or that he wants to take visits...I think it is committable and only thing that would change that would be if the staff wants to see grades....definitely will be on watch tomorrow though

Definitely some nice punts in that video.

really a punter? Seriously? OMG? what a waste! Total BS! This is supposed to excite us?
Okay, initial snap judgement out of the way! I always bought into the book that special teams and field position is what wins games. I just don't think the kicking game has been up to par last few years (mostly the coverage has been the fault but kicking really should have been better). Getting a good punter is important and I wouldn't take this signing lightly by any means. Welcome to the team Johnny! Here is to future 1st and 10's at the one for OSU opponents!
It will be hard for any team to go 99 yards on this defense!

I saw a UFO told me to have a goodyear!

dancorona5's picture

if you went to the spring game and saw some of the punts in that game...this makes a whole lot of sense

AJBor41's picture

I love the arrow on the video.... Oh, that's where the punter stands... got it!
It looks like he has good form and hopefully a bright future with OSU.  That said, I hope we don't have to see him more than a couple of times per outing.

OSUBias's picture

Agree x100, I had the same thought. Oh, he's back there again in this highlight, THANKS!

7 yards and a cloud of dust is a beautiful thing

Punting is winning ∴ recuiting punters is winning recruiting.

Indeed...not to mention some B1G teams were after him as well as notable others.  SCORE!

Let's not get carried away... what B1G and "other notable" teams were after him?  I see an offer from Cincinnati.
Not saying he's not a good get... just hate the wild hyperbole that goes on around here sometimes.

Yeah, hyperbole totally sucks!

Remember how bad scUM's punting game was under Dick Rod? I don't mind giving a punter a scholarship. Looks like he can kick it a mile.

Denny's picture

How much you wanna bet he can kick a football over them mountains?

LOL. If Johnny is half as good as Uncle Ricco, we'll go to State.

GoBucks917's picture

If you look at who one of the biggest game changers in college football was last year it was a punter: Brad Wing (LSU). His ability to bomb punts or place punts inside the 20 changed the game for LSU. LSU's defense was amazing but they were often set up by the great punting of Wing. Although it's not a sexy recruit, special is/always will be a part of the game you need to win.

buckeye76BHop's picture

I like the addition...not to mention as an upcoming SR he can boom it.  Our punter in HS was a huge reason why our defense was ranked in the state.  Pin em deep and it makes it difficult to score.  Welcome Johnny!

I'm just gonna go ahead and say it, please nobody call the number at the beginning of the video.  We dont need a repeat performance.

I never saw a football player make a tackle with a smile on his face

4.5 forty, eh? Can't wait to see J-Town take off on some fakes.

This. The fake punt may live again at Ohio State.

He will also play baseball at tOSU.  Welcome to the family Johnny Boy. I had to say it.

I like to believe that my best hits border on felonious assault.

Buckeyeneer's picture

I am a fan of good punters and kickers. I still occasionally think back to the glory days of the Nuge, when I could be confident that he would split the uprights from the 50, 9 of 10 times.

Wow, I missed the grey box!

Welcome aboard Johnny, I love a punter than can pin teams deep!

Makes our D even more formidable to opposing teams.

Hopefully, Gibson is next!

Denny's picture

Let's see if he can be as fast as Andy Groom by the time he's done at OSU.

scUM's picture

Ditto the arrow. Oh, right, that's where the punter lines up. Classic.  Anyway, I hope to see many punts from this kid when he plays scUM.

ShadyBuckeye's picture

Of course the one day I only visit 11W one time (when I woke up this morning) we get a commitment lol. Hopefully he's followed by Gibson, Vonn Bell, Foster, Green and a couple O-Lineman. That would be my perfect class.

jestertcf's picture

I remember the days our kickers put the kick off's in the third row. No chance for run back in worth a scholorship.

lot of comments for a punter commit, but happy we were able to fill a spot of need with what appears to be a quality, on to more pressing needs, and Im looking at you WR, S, and OL...

Maestro's picture

SIAP, but I absolutely love the arrow before each punt.  Uh, no shit.

vacuuming sucks

Arizona_Buckeye's picture

Sorry - it is hard to get excited about a punter!  I know, I know, I know - we need a good one, but it just pains me to spend a scholarship on it...

The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced

703Buckeye's picture

I don't mind using a scholarship on a top-flight punter and/or kicker. If they are as good as advertised, they will save us in a game or two.

ShadyBuckeye's picture

Of course you would use a schoarship on a player like Mike Nugent. Teams will also spend a FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK on him if he's good enough (tho usually not a punter)... Ray Guy is the only one I believe. I would spend a late 1st round pick on Shane Lechler. He's a game-changer. So hopefully Long John Townsend is that type of talent.

Irricoir's picture

Basil was brought in on scholarship. The question is, was he worth it? I'd say he looked it at the spring game with some big kicks during field goals but we haven't exactly been able to kick it out of the back of the end zone on kick offs either. Thoughts??

I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.

Maestro's picture

I think using Basil for kickoffs his freshman year was one of the worst redshirt-burns in the history of college football.

good highlight reel for the punter butnot so good for the long snapper, geez how many off target snaps  did he save there?
I think this is a good scholarship offer; great punter, additional athlete to tackle in coverage, plus he has a great GPA. I love to see athletes rewarded for good academic achievementas well.
