Sprinkle Makes Nine

Yesterday we updated you on defensive lineman Tracy Sprinkle out of Elyria. The 6-4/250 prospect told us he picked up an Ohio State offer a few weeks ago on his visit and that he was favoring the Buckeye and Spartans, while saying he would make a college decision whenever he felt the time was right for him.

Apparently that time is right now, as Sprinkle tweeted "It's official. #BuckeyeNation" and confirmed to me via text message that he indeed did commit to the Ohio State staff today.

Sprinkle becomes the ninth commit in the class of 2013 and the second defensive lineman, joining Billy Price. Sprinkle can play both defensive tackle and defensive end, giving Mike Vrabel's unit some flexibility. The Buckeyes are expected to take only one more lineman in this class with their eyes set on last week's visitor Joey Bosa, who also may visit again this weekend for the Spring Game.

While the choice of school isn't all that surprising, the timing is, as it wasn't 100% clear if Sprinkle had a committable offer or not. Apparently he did and in the Elyria product the Buckeyes get an athletic, high motor player to join a defensive line corps that is set to be (in the words of Urban) "borderline ridiculous" in the coming years. He gives Ohio State their ninth verbal pledge in a class that is expected to number around 18.

We will try to catch up with Tracy to get more on his commitment to Ohio State, so stay tuned to 11W for more information.

Congrats to Sprinke. This is a bit surprising, but not really upsetting to me.

Given the way the staff is going after d-linemen, I see Sprinkle at DT, not DE. Let's see Sprinkle add on a few pounds and become the next high-motor DT that the Silver Bullets will need in a few years.

The puns. I can see them coming now. Oh dear lord.

On a more postiive note, Welcome to BuckeyeNation, Sir Sprinkle. Glad to have you aboard the USS Meyer, we are glad you chose us as your intercollegiate school of choice. Remember, We Don't Give a Damn for the Whole State of Michigan, 'Cause we're from O-HI-O!!

Better to have Sprinkle than guys named Taco and Butt, like TTUN has.

He could be that special sprinkle on the top of the frosting.

Haha, taco butt. There's gotta be a good joke in reference to hoke involved somewhere with this.

Yes.  This.

When you're holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

not going to be Lazard...I think Courtney Love for sure this weekend...Anzalone and Bosa could be close, although may not make it public right away...still have Heuerman on 4/27

What's the timeline on Lazard?

I get the impression Lazard decision will be shortly after the Pocic decision or is that off base?

ItsFav's picture

Lets say Joey Bosa and Lewis Neal want to commit...Does Meyer take both?

A lot of people say there is only 1 DL spot left, so just interested in hearing everyones thoughts.

703Buckeye's picture

I know there's only one spot left, but I can see Urban taking both. Both Neal and Bosa are "can't miss" players. Urban would be crazy to turn down whoever commits second of the two, especially if it's Bosa.

ItsFav's picture

I agree. I have been hearing that the odd man out if this were to happen, could be someone like Courtney Love.

703Buckeye's picture

I don't know who would/should be left out, but I hope it's not Love. He's also a great talent; not to mention, Love would probably go to Nebraska if he can't go to OSU.

Alex's picture

Love is in already :) I think Anzalone will join him...I don't think Jaylon Smith comes, but OSU definitely still in the game...if not I bank that scholly or give it to Kimbrough

BTwrestle04's picture

Still shocked we haven't offered Kimbrough. I want that kid in Scarlet and Gray.

Alex's picture

Neal may play OLB

ItsFav's picture

That is what I was thinking. It would probably take a LB out of the picture, right?...Could be many people but Courtney Love comes to mind right now.

Northbrook's picture

The 40 times I've seen for him are pretty slow for an OLB.

Arizona_Buckeye's picture

Welcome to the Buckeye Nation Tracy!!! You are going to be a part of something incredibly special - not to mention ridiculously scary to opposing offenses.  Urban is building a monster monster defense right now!!!

The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced

Buckeyeholicwompa's picture

Opposing linemen going againt this guy are gonna sprinkle when they tinkle.

phxbuck's picture

I think this is perfect timing right before the spring game.  I think this gives some of the guys visiting for the game a sense of urgency regarding committable offers and jumping on board sooner or later since we have limited schollies.  I want an Anzalone commitment this weekend.

703Buckeye's picture

Yes! We're seeing "pressure-cooker" mentality starting up. I have a feeling we'll see 3-4 more commits after this weekend.

Wonder if this has anything to do with the perception being that Bosa is all Buckeye and Sprinkle wanting to get in before the gates close on the DLine.

Very plausible scenario.

BlockOHBuckeye's picture

What's the deal with all these names? Love, Butt, Taco, Sprinkle? lol

DefendOhio's picture

No real impressive offers. Eh, gotta trust the staff on this one.

corveyer's picture

@ BlockOH Gotta say I think Taco Charlton has hands down the best name out of all of them right now with Sprinkle in second?

Alex you seem to think Love is in for sure. Assuming thats the case, do you think at this point the staff will take commits from front seven guys that aren't named Bosa, Anzalone, or Smith considering the haul we have gotten at LB and DL the last two classes? Not saying they wont closer to NSD when the picture on available scholarships and whose available is more clear.

But back to the main topic congrats Tracey Sprinkle, welcome to Buckeye nation!! I know he's not as sexy a name right now as other propects but as other have said got trust the staff. Any commit they are taking right now, especially in the front seven, they must absolutely love. For those not excited about the commit just remember the experience of the Four guys making the call. Urban's track record speaks for itself but don't forget Vrabel, Fickell, and Withers two were defensive line standouts on the dline at tOSU, one was a pro bowler, two have had multiple d-linemen drafted in the first round, and one coached defensive in college and in the NFL. Needless to say those guys know a quality front seven player when they see one.

aboynamedtracy's picture

Wait... Tracy isn't a sexy name? That does explain a lot...

JasonBuck's picture

I know this is a "dead horse" that there is probably a thread on , but what is the MAXIMUM number of guys we take in this class? Just for my own sheer curiosity...

703Buckeye's picture

I've heard it could max-out at 20.

"Attack the Strong, Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead!"
-Former OSU S&C Coach Lichter

Northbrook's picture

Right now it is 15 but we all know there is always more room because of a variety of reasons. The staff have an idea what the final number will be. We may see some guys opt out after the spring game if they feel they will not be in the plans come game day.

JasonBuck's picture

Yah, I've heard the same thing 15-18 but as many as 20.  We are already at 9, probably 3 for the spring game and maybe 3 more over the summer into the season.  That's 15 and maybe 3-5 around NSD.

sir rickithda3rd's picture

I trust the staff completely... I just havent heard much of this kid.... what does everyone else think?

mark may wins douchebag of the year... again

JasonBuck's picture

I think he has a high motor and it's always good to keep a kid in state.  And from the tape I've seen he definitely looks like he gets after it.  Like you said, have to trust the staff on this one.

FLBuckeye's picture

Every great class has to have those couple of 3 stars and one that surprises everyone by becoming a big time contributor down the road. Hopefully Tracy is one of those! But now I'm having a tough time trying to decide who I'm going to vote for the best name for a 2013 recruit: Ezekiel or Sprinkle?

BritishBuckeye's picture

Not so sure if this is news to get super exicted about...don't know much about this kid but based on the other sites, kind of wonder if this scholly is worth it.

otrain2416's picture

I was really suprised by this one especially since Bosa has been hot on us right now and were still recruiting players like Hill, Munger, Daniel, Neal, Golmore, Poggi. I trust Urbans evaluations. He does come from a decent football team in Northeast Ohio where IMO is the toughest and most competitive region top to bottom in the state of Ohio.

@Hayze I thought the same exact thing you did that Bosa may have a silent commitment and they started putting the pressure on the other DL and Sprinkle bit first.

JasonBuck's picture

Here is something to think about...5 years from now....when we are debating "Meyer's first full class".....will Taco Charlton or Tracy Sprinkle be better???  A kid ranked higher but not persude or a guy ranked lower and persude...should make for a interesting debate.

BritishBuckeye's picture

I just hope Bosa joins the fun...our D line would be absolutely nasty for the next 3-4 years...I can't wait for Schutt, Washington, and Spence to get to OSU...come on BOSA

btalbert25's picture

Jamal Marcus was a 3 star that didn't have an incredible list of offers.  Sure he had South Carolina and Auburn on his list, but it looked like it basically came down to Ohio State and East Carolina.  Sprinkle has a similar list.  He has Arkansas as did Marcus, then nice programs like Michigan State, Penn State, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Just because a guy isn't ranked high before he plays one down his senior year in high school doesn't mean he isn't as good or better than some of the guys we think should have committed or should of been a priority before Sprinkle.  There are thousands of kids these services have to evaluate, they aren't going to get them all right.  I trust the staff, who have actually talked to the kid, and are professionals capable of breaking down talent to add the correct personnel to this team.

Buckeye06's picture

The kid has good offers; Arky, PSU, MSU are all top 20 caliber programs.

I am absolutely sure that I trust Meyer than any of the recruiting sites.  He's the head coach, and no matter what we as fans think, he has the final say and we don't.  You guys love to point out how you like that he doesn't take kids that have bad attitudes even if they're studs, but then you get mad that he doesn't only bring in 5* kids

juventas's picture

Sprinkle was offered by a two-time national championship winning head coach, coaching at his dream school.........I trust Coach Meyer.

Ahh Saturday's picture

1) Welcome aboard Mr. Sprinkle!

2) With Price and Sprinkle already in, I think Urban takes two more DL provided they are the right guys.

3) For the stargazers, here's a little variation of the "AJ Hawk was a 3*" meme: Luke Kuechly, Whitney Mercilus, Jerel Worthy were all 3* guys, and we passed on each of them.  Sometimes you have to dig for the gold.

FortMeyer's picture

Keep in mind Meyer and staff have all the inside info on the kid from his HS coaches and such. He could have a tremendous work ethic and desire that can only be seen by those close to him. Man we have the dline do we not? Defense wins championships. Never once have I heard any knowledgeable football person say offense wins championships, no matter how many olinemen you have comitted to your team from up north....HaHa.

Gobucks22250's picture

I talked to someone i know who knows Ohio HS football well and got some good info on this kid. He said Sprinkle is a legit 6'4" and 270, but is around 260 right now because he plays basketball. He says he is more athletic than Chase Farris was and has a good frame to put on more size to get to 280-290 and will be able to keep his athleticsism . He said he will more than likely play the same role as bellamy as SDE/DT but thinks he will be better than Bellamy. He thinks his offers will keep rolling in and although he dosent have offers from your floridas or your alabamas he has some really good offers. He points out Dantonio/Narduzzi of MSU and Larry Johnson of PSU are three of the best Dline talent evaluaters in the country and it says alot they offered early and want this kid to play for them. He also noted thay Paul Haynes and Taver Johnson are good talent evaluaters and that they offered Sprinkle almost as soon as they got to Arkansas.

TheBadOwl's picture

A.J. Hawk, Santonio Holmes, James Laurinatis, Malcolm Jenkins, Brian Hartline, Brian Robiske, Chimdi Chekwa, Dane Sanzenbacher, etc. are all 3* recruits we've gotten in the past.

Other notables are guys like Stanford's Johnathan Martin and David Decastro (both will be first-rounders this year). Andy Dalton was a three star. So were Kendall Wright and Justin Blackmon.

Urban knows what he's doing. Look at Brian Johnson, who was a 2* quarterback when Urban recruited him at Utah. He led Utah to an undefeated season and Sugar Bowl victory after Urban left, and now, at age 25 is Utah's offensive coordinator. Or Paul Kruger, who was another 2* in that same class, who went in the second round and now starts for the Ravens. Bryce McCain and Sean Smith were both 2* recruits for Urban, and they're both starting corners in the NFL now.

I trust Urban on this one.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

btalbert25's picture

That and he's a 3 star before getting exposure at camps this summer and playing a down his senior year.  A 3 star could be a 5 star next February.  Even if he's not who cares.  A lot of people make a lot of judgements based on a you tube highlight tape or star ratings that some dude on the internet assigns based off of highlight tapes from YouTube.

As someone said above, he's got a little more room to grow.  If Sprinkle gets up to 280 or 290 over the summer and fall and keeps that athleticism, he's going to jump up the rankings.  That's what a lot of the star ratings are based off of, what kind of size does the guy have and what kind of speed for that size.  Look at a guy like Hankins, if he didn't weigh quite so much in high school he easily could have been a 5 star recruit.

Jdadams01's picture

ESPN doesn't even have him evaluated yet.

(from scout.com):

STRENGTHS: Athleticism; Intensity/Effort; Quickness off Ball

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: Disengaging Skills; Techniques and Moves

I definitely trust this staff. And, after checking out his scout.com profile, I really like that the strengths are things you can't really teach, like: quickness, athletcisim, etc.; and his areas for improvement are: disengaging skills & techniques/moves. The coaches can always help teach and improve on those kind of areas for improvement. And, I'm sure he will be coached up with this great coaching staff.

So....the coaches figured if a guy is athletic and a little raw, but just needs better technique -- he's probably got a lot of upside and is underrated right now. Jayme Thompson is a similar prospect: big, rangy and athletic...just needs some good coaching to up his technique.

This is a very solid get for the good guys.

I know stars do not mean everything when it comes to recruiting, but do you guys think that Sprinkle or Hurst Jr. have potential to be 4-star recruits?

GlueFingers Lavelli's picture

I don't know about Courtney Love, I mean Hole was such a terrible band.

Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.

buckeye76BHop's picture

Looking at Sprinkle got me thinking of Cam Heyward...if he's anything like him that will be a plus (and I don't like comparing former to new guys...really just hoping actually).  Looked at his film, he's big and fast but I'm not sure he's fast enough in comparison to all the DE talent  already  at OSU and who they have coming in.  IMO think he'll end up gaining weight and playing at DT.  Could be a very tough DT if he does chooses to move.

they have 11 and we have 5.  5 of 9 commits.  with 11 more to come.  Its really play makers in College football.  We already have more play makers in our class.

mr.buckeye's picture

Welcome aboard Sprinkle.....I see our defense as awesome in the next few years...:)  WOW!!!!

BritishBuckeye's picture

I think out of OSU's 18-20 member class we will find 8-10 of them as ESPNU150 when it is all said and done anyways...in terms of Sprinkle...we obviously have a long time to wait and see what he brings to the table, but right now he is our lowest rated commit thus far per most, if not all of the sites, so heres to hoping everyone who has evaluated him thus far professionally is wrong

Alex's picture

ESPN's rankings suck....BY FAR the worst of the big four (Rivals, Scout, 247)...I'd say that whether OSU had all 9 recruits in the 150 or if they had none

btalbert25's picture

I agree, they've always sucked, you would thinkg with the kind of money and attention recruiting brings in ESPN would want to revamp their coverage a bit.  Lord knows they have the resources.

Rational MFAN's picture

but......but......but wait, Urban Meyer only signs 4 and 5 stars!

lol all kidding aside, I read a few questioning the commit. It is real simple if the head coach feels like he can take a commit from a kid, he sees some potential in him. The recruiting services are not always right, especially when it comes to 3 star guys. Mike Hart and Braylon Edwards are examples of those. Also, your 3 star guys are just as important to a recruiting class. Believe me, even Alabama takes some.

Rational MFAN's picture

Also, yes do not put too much stock into ESPN's ranking. It is always awful and someone brought it to my attention that 1 of every 3 players on there is either from Florida or Georgia. Talk about SEC bias. Also, I love Conley (our commit from Massillon) but he is not our second highest rated commit.

rider1's picture

No way in hell that UFM reaches at this point in recruiting. No way! He knows where this young man will end up in the big scheme. We are not used to being able to pick & choose. Do we really believe we would be reaching at DL at this point? Not me.

wigbug5's picture

Sprinkle will be a DT all the way. It might take some time to bulk up his body and teach him some techniques but we might have just picked up the next 3* All-American. Would love to see the next Cam Heyward out of him. It really means alot for Urban to declare the defensive line bordering on "rediculous." First, Tressel got the ball rolling recently with some really nasty, sick linemen; then for 2012 we got a fast and furious Urban Assault with DE's,tackles; and it's not slowing down for '13! In the near future, Vrabel's unit will make opposing coaches go into halftimes wondering why the "hurricane" warning sirens werent sounded. Add that to Fickle's crazy/freakish speedy LB's coming in and the vicious DB units led by Withers and Coombs. Pretty soon we wont even need an offense more than a field goal kicker..... oh, thats right Urban doesn't mind dropping 60 on teams. Starting in 2013 the NCAA/BCS will be heavily stacked in our favor. GO BUCKS!
