Donovan Munger Makes 19

Urban Meyer has struck gold once again, this time in the form of a commitment from Shaker Heights product, Donovan Munger, who gave the OSU boss a verbal pledge following his official visit to Columbus over the weekend.

Munger, a 6-4/285 two-way lineman, is primarily being recruited as a defensive tackle. He is rated as a composite four-star prospect by recruiting services and chose the Buckeyes over offers from top programs such as UCLA, Georgia, West Virginia, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Penn State, Auburn, and Tennessee, among others.

Considered a defensive tackle right now, Munger becomes the fifth true defensive lineman in this class, joining Joey Bosa, Billy Price, Michael Hill, and Tracy Sprinkle. While he can certainly have a talented career at that position, it wouldn't completely shock me to see him eventually move to offensive guard somewhere down the road, as his film on that side of the ball is very impressive as well.

Nonetheless this is another solid pickup for Urban Meyer and the coaching staff, as they march closer to landing one of the top recruiting classes in the nation for 2013. Stay tuned for up-to-date news from 11W, as we keep you posted on the latest buzz in the recruiting world.

Just rewatched his film. I don't care which side of the field Donovan plays on, I just want him out there.

I love the clip against Brush at the 3 min mark, drives an Arc player 30 some yards into the endzone completely away from the play. Doing his best "Blind Side" impression.

GRAY BOX!!! This defense in 2-3 years is going to be sickening.  Back to when opposing teams were averaging less than 10 points a game.

Think its very good news for the Buckeyes... but Rivals has Munger rated a 3 star recruit. Was he a 4 star??? You mentioned in the gray box that "He is rated as a four star star prospect by all recruiting services". Just curious when he lost the 4th star at Rivals and why?  Thanks...

Why would someone downvote KMP10's comment/question? My upvote for KMP10 to even that out.

Was thinking Munger might not get into the class because of numbers.

Guess there will be even more openings and we will take at least 24 now.

Gray boxes indicate verbal commitments.

Run_Fido_Run's picture
Run_Fido_Run on 9 Dec 2012 - 3:34pm #

A gray box basically means big "breaking news," which can be good or bad. So, yes, the good gray box items are often verbal commitments, but they might also signal a de-commitment :(.

Gray boxes might also appear for other good news items like national signing day fax reports, new coaching hires, etc. Unfortunately, during the Tagate/Jobgate days, there was a few month period when it seemed like all the gray boxes were bad news.

Few things I noticed about him in his Offensive tape (I think he ends up at OG):

He definitely plays with a mean streak on the OL, love that
Not a lot of pass blocking on his tape, but appears to have decent footwork
Might need a little work on his hands, seemed to get outside a little bit. Saw a few holds on his tape

All in all I think it's a great pickup! Welcome to the famly Donovan

I love that in all the forum topics about who will complete the class (and there were a lot of them) I'd say only about 5% had Munger on their list. Not saying I love when people are wrong...but I do.  I never had him in this class on any of those forums mainly because I never participated in those discussions.  I love that he is a part of the class, especially being an Ohio guy. Go Bucks!

ha!  remember a QB prospect that Saban wanted a few years ago.  The QB stayed in his home State and was a true Sophomore this year.  That QB led his team to a 12-0 record.  He also had almost 2,100 yards passing w/ 15 tds and 6 ints, plus almost 1,300 yards rushing w/ 13 tds............ that guy didn't impress the Heisman voters.

Anybody beginning to wonder what the situation at tight end will look like in a few years? UFM tends to use an elite tight end and unless I'm missing something we don't have that guy. Also, do we have a legit center of the future? Few odd questions I know but I would like to hear from somebody more in the know than I.

William's picture
William on 10 Dec 2012 - 4:13am #

Meyer has said that Jacoby Boren looks to be a good player at center. Also, we have Vannett and Heuerman at tight end. We're perfectly fine there, and with Baugh coming in, we'll be set there for quite some time.

Squirrel Master's picture
Squirrel Master on 10 Dec 2012 - 11:15am #

Marcus Baugh is a legit TE! Trust us, the elite TE is coming next year.

Everything that has been said about BabyBoren is that he could have started this year. Linsley was really good this year for a first year starter. At the end he started to screw up with high snaps but throughout most of the year he was a road block for Braxton and Hyde. It will be a good battle between two very talent players.

otrain2416's picture
otrain2416 on 10 Dec 2012 - 11:18am #

Meyer spoke extremely high of Boren so it sounds like he'll be the next center once Linsley graduates. He also stated our TE were one of the deepest positions we had hence Stoneburners move to WR. With Heuerman gonna be a Jr and Vannett gonna be a RSO. We should be great on this position for the next few years. I would actually be suprised to see Blake Thomas or Baugh get some if any playing time the next few years with those 2 studs ahead of them.

Crimson's picture
Crimson on 10 Dec 2012 - 2:19pm #

Others have already addressed Boren being the future center, but Bobek also transferred, presumably because Boren was already the leader for backup.  Bobek was highly rated when he came.

Is it reasonable to assume that either Munger or Price will be on the offensive side of the ball by their sophomore year? I know that Meyer has, for years, been pretty fearless in moving players to where they will perform best and where they are needed most (see Boren, Zachary and Fragel, Reid) and both Price and Munger excel on both sides. I see the Munger pickup then as pretty much certain that Dawson goes elsewhere, but as we still need O-linemen, can we predict if one will fill that need?

buck-I.8's picture
buck-I.8 on 10 Dec 2012 - 11:24am #

It's expected that one or both will at least be tried out on offense in practice to get a feel for it. I would guess it would be Munger, who's built like a guard and has some impressive OL clips

otrain2416's picture
otrain2416 on 10 Dec 2012 - 11:33am #

I would say its safe to assume that. Munger looked like a beast on the Oline in his highlight film. I haven't really heard or seen much about Price. Since were losing all our starters on the Dline (assuming Hankins goes to the draft). I would guess he gives those 2 an opportunity first to earn a starting roll/ spot in the rotation then move them around as needed.
