Jaamal Berry Involved in... Something?

I don't even know how to report on this:

Ohio State tailback Jaamal Berry was admitted and released from the OSU Medical Center Wednesday after what an OSU police report described as an "assault" on another student.

...

At about 10:25 a.m., two males were witnessed "wrestling on the ground" in the South Oval, according to the police report. The primary witness is a university employee who declined to comment, but said in the police report that Berry was muttering things such as "I don't know what is going on around me."

The report said Berry "appeared confused and disoriented and was unable to tell me his name."

The OSU police officer on the scene observed that Berry was "mentally unable to provide me with any of his emergency contact information," and Berry voluntarily went to the OSU emergency department.

The associate director of athletics communication, Jerry Emig, said the department is aware of the incident and do not know if it will affect his play in the game on Saturday.

Best of luck to Jaamal in getting this sorted out.

Hope all's alright - until I know anything more I'm going to operature under the assumption that he's a big Andy Kaufman fan and was trying out some new absurdist theatre.

it's easy to assume things.....but this whole thing sounds nuts.  hope he is ok.

Berry for....Heis..man *Insert about 40 question marks here*

This is confusing. Was the victim or assailant? Was he high?...because it kind of sounds like it.

buckeyechad's picture

sounds like he was alittle more than high...

that's drunk mixed with high...i've been there back in my day...really high..reaaaaaaaally drunk

Sounds like he was on the losing end of a fist fight and possibly got knocked out. The Lantern might be choosing to word the story in such a way so as to make it sound more intriguing than it really is.

A second and third reading of the article leads me to the conclusion this is just a piss poor case of writing and editing. The article refers to Berry as both assailant and victim. I would bet the police report does not read that way.

Edit: I see now The Lantern article has been edited and makes more cohesive sense.

Word is Berry may have had a REALLY bad reaction to a medicine but who knows.....one of the weirdest things I've ever heard

jenks's picture

That's actually happened to me. No joke. I wandered to starbucks from my dorm in boxers and a tshirt to ask for water and what was going on. They called an ambulance. I said it was 1998 and Clinton was president. It was actually like 3 years ago.

I don't know from first-hand experience but know a couple people who have had adverse reactions. One was very minor & the other well, similar to yours.

At this point in time, just hope the guy is ok. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be disoriented & confused in that manner, but imagine there is a fair amount of fear.

what is wrong with these kids?  perfect reason why the floating captain idea does not work.  u need to secure a captain and make sure that individual doesnt let things like this happen.

Bucks's picture

Well considering we have no clue yet what did happen, I'll reserve any form of conclusion ... or jumping to one.

Things like what?  Drawing any assumption from that article about what actually happened is a huge leap.

I'll agree with this.  I must say my heart skips a beat now when I see that box at the top of the screeen

My college roommate was diabetic and every now and then he'd flip out and get a little violent and incoherent. You couldn't make any sense of what he said and he didn't always know where he was or what he was doing. You could usually talk him down and then get his blood sugar fixed and he'd be normal again but it was bizarre and scary. I'm not suggesting this is the case with Berry, but the human body is a funny thing at times. I hope this wasn't chemically self-inflicted and I'll wait until more facts are known to comment further.

Biddle seems to be insinuating that it was more than just a bad reaction to meds

Not sure why he'd phrase his tweet that way unless it Berry was doing hoodrat stuff

Conroy's picture

It sounds a lot more like he is insinuating that Berry has been in the dog house than that he has some sort of medical problem that would keep him off the field.

Mr. Slick's picture

Either he took that tweet down or I'm more twitter dumb than I thought. Either way could someone quote or paraphrase what he said?

Mr. Slick - "And the more we learn about Jaamal Berry, the clearer it becomes why he's never seen much PT at tailback."

Crossing my fingers for the kid for now...I have been a big supporter...let's just say I am optimistic that this is just a health issue that will quickly be treated and resolved. Just hope I don't get blind sided like the last time I was optimistic.
