A Most Unsightly 'W'

Well, that was three and a half hours of your life you'll never get back.

It took a final defensive stand and plenty of help from Toledo but the Buckeyes held on for a painful 27-22 victory to move to 2-0 on the season.

We now have even more questions than answers as the real Joe Bauserman showed up upon facing some adversity while the defense and special teams showed some inconsistencies of their own.

We can still say this team is undefeated - but for how much longer?

Oh well, for now, let's ride.

Look, despite what even the most homerish of fans think, we're not going to the NCG this year. Style points mean nothing to us. We've had plenty of ugly wins over the course of the past few years that have left us thinking, "What the f is going on?" Stay competitive in the BIG, go to the conference championship game, put ourselves in a position to go to a BCS game, and let the young guys cut their teeth on a BIG conference schedule. That's the best we can hope for this year. Yes, there are significant issues on offense that need to get hammered out. But, we didn't lose to an in state team. Moving on to Week 3...

Breathe, breathe, breathe. We sucked today, but we won. Echo the no ncg comment...... Toledo has some good players, but we did not play well. At all. Shitstorm to ensue.

First of all, Luke Fickell get your head out of your ass and quit coaching like you have something to lose! The fact that Braxton took a total of 0 snaps this game was one of the worst coaching decisions I've seen made at Ohio State in the past 10 years. Wake up coach, your expiration date currently reads 11/26/2011.

William's picture

Completely Agree. He and Bollman would have coached better if they were playing f*cking NCAA 12 and had Ask Corso on..

O-H Kee Pa's picture

If we did lose today, his expiration might as well have read 9/10/2011.

buckeyedude's picture

I agree Jake. It certainly seemed like the whole game OSU was playing not to lose.

Also agree that it was a mistake not to let Braxton get some snaps. It shows me that even though Fick says The Baus and Miller are equals, he has no confidence in Miller. Not good for the future. I hope he doesn't transfer(sarc.).

The crowd was flat(from my view watching my 58" Toshiba on my sofa. C'mon Buckeye fans, make some damn noise!), the team was flat. But some credit must go to the Rockets. That is a damn good team.

William's picture

We'll see how good they really are next week against Boise.

buckeyedude's picture

Personally, I think how well(or not) Toledo does against Boise State will say more about Ohio State than Toledo.

Isn't Boise State top 5?

I just hope they have anything left after the way they played today.

I was thinkin' the same thing..weak crown noise today. Also, not to continue the negativity train, but should it have really taken until the 3rd qtr for Bollman to realize the end around is not a good play call for this team?

I just think it's not a good play for a guy like Carlos Hyde who isn't a burner by any means, which is what is necessary to get to the edge.

Matt's picture

Yeah I don't ever recall seeing so many stretch plays called in a single game.  I could understand if Berry was out there, but these RBs should be running through the tackles.

Nitz25's picture

Little off topic... but Penn state just called 3 timeouts in the first drive of the game against Alabama.  They're now out of timeouts with 9:18 left in the 1st quarter.

Thoughts:

  • Missing all those guys hurt us big time.
  • Joey B, ew...that is all
  • Braxton Miller better get his chance against Miami, and early
  • Carlos Hyde scored twice but still needs to improve A LOT
  • I'd guess Rod Smith played himself onto the bench for the rest of the season
  • Devin Smith is looking very good
  • D Line is young but will get better and better
  • Secondary looks young but really good, and I can't believe Clarke is only 3rd string

And on that thought, Bring on Miami.

...also Penn State is moving the ball really well against BAMA right now., WE'RE NOT...PENN STATE, but we are rooting for them right now.

buckeyedude's picture

Seriously, would have no problem if Roderick sat the bench the rest of the season.

I thought given the suspensions and the inexperience even leaving those suspensions aside, the Buckeyes were probably about a 6-6 team this season. Blowing out the worst team in FBS allowed me to forget that for a week, but this game had "Texas Bowl, here we come" written all over it.

Bauserman is who we thought he was. Without perfect protection and a receiver who is wide open, he simply can't get it done. There's something to be said for merely avoiding mistakes against MAC opposition (I suppose that is the tacit argument for not playing Miller today), but against equal talent, his deficiencies will matter a lot more.

Rod Smith: Nice knowing you. You can't fumble once every 10 carries and hold a job, even just to give the other guy a breather.

On top of everything else, we need to consider recruiting a new kicker, if this is as good as it's gonna get with Basil.

Following this game online while watching Wisconsin pulverize Oregon State did not fill me with wild optimism about the good times ahead this season. Bottom line is we're going to need the defense to kill it every week to even stay close to the better teams.

JakeBuckeye's picture

Without perfect protection and a receiver who is wide open, he simply can't get it done.

Even then you're wrong, because Bauserman missed at least 3 WIDE OPEN recievers down field today.

William's picture

If we play like we did today we will lose to Miami, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan handily. This was the worst performance by an Ohio State team since the Title game against Florida. Toledo deserved to win this game. We deserved to lose, this team needs to get their ass kicked after this, because playing like this was just shameful.

Matt's picture

Worst performance?  Purdue Harbor.  PURDUE HARBOR.  NEVER FORGET.

William's picture

That Purdue game was enflamed by several turnovers, we didn't have nearly as many against Toledo. This game was just shitty.

Matt's picture

So having many turnovers isn't factored into "worst performance since game X?"

William's picture

Alright what I'm saying is that this team was in a scenario that was just as bad as the Purdue game, except we weren't shooting ourselves in the foot through turnovers, the team literally just played like shit. This shouldn't have been a win.

Buckeye Chuck's picture

Yeah, I think the concern with today is that we can't blame this on turnovers (though the blocked punt hurt, obviously), bad breaks, fluke plays, or penalties--in fact, we were very much the beneficiaries of penalties. It seemed more like a battle of equals.

And the traditional Tresselball "struggle in the first half, but wait for our manpower to wear them down in the second half" scenario--that didn't happen either.

The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.

buckeyedude's picture

William, I know you're probably going to bust my balls for saying this, but you are spoiled. We have been spoiled. Give Toledo some gosh dang credit, will ya? And don't forget how many players OSU was missing(Toledo also didn't have their #1 LB in the game). But certainly, this team is likely going to drop a few games(hope I'm wrong)  with this offense.

William's picture

Paige is an excellent player, there is no doubt about that. Our overall talent is well beyond that of Toledo's. Toledo came in with an excellent gameplan, also the senior they had replacing their Mike I believe, had a Hell of a game, he blew up a few plays. We had a shitty gameplan, got very little pressure with the exception of Simon, and Hankins once. Our corners and safeties were burned on screen plays. Johnson was timid in the field. I'm sorry but put people on the field who actually look like they want to play. Simon and Sweat showed up, very few others did. Also the kicking is inexcusable.

O-H Kee Pa's picture

Agree with a lot of what you said, but I don't think "Texas Bowl, here we come" is fair. We've looked like shit against Ohio, BGSU, Navy, and Purdue in the past. Somehow, it has always worked out. If we played Wisconsin right now, it would be ugly. But, we don't; we play Miami who we can and should beat.

DAVE's picture

Count me as one of the fans who booed after Bauserman overthrew another (!) wide open deep ball. I truly can't fathom how this isn't Boeckman part two. give Miller a freaking chance!

I also cant understand how we didn't blitz every down. When we put pressure on their qbs we stopped them. Can someone explain that one.

yrro's picture

No defense blitzes every down. It's structurally unsound.

Blitzing works when the offense is not expecting it. Playing downhill, as in a blitz, is what makes those outside screen plays and 3-step drops so effective.

William's picture

And when we didn't blitz their Qb sat back and picked us apart with little check downs. The D-line was horrendous for most of the game.

yrro's picture

Which... didn't work.

Their offense had two successful drives. Both of which were made possible almost *entirely* by one big play and a horrific missed tackle. Blitzing doesn't fix that.

DAVE's picture

Fair enough. But we had success with blitzes, but for some reason weren't called when they could have made a difference.

buckeyedude's picture

Why did it take us almost 3 qtrs to figure out that we ought not kick the ball to Eric Page? He should be on Heisman watch, IMHO. That kid will put up some gaudy numbers vs. MAC teams.

Braxton couldn't do worse could he?

Rod Smith if you want to play you better hold on to the damn ball.  Eddie had fumble issues early on too.

Coaching gets an F for the week.

I didn't understand all the long downfield passes especially when we needed a 1st down and to burn some clock... Really need to start developing some shorter schemes and not out in the flat. Take a seat Rod.

Rooster Buckburn's picture

Ugly ugly win - reminds me of our victory over UC in 2002 (24-19 I think).  We certainly have lots to work on - blocking and tackling come to mind - as well as special teams play that has been leaving much to be desired.  Next week we'll learn a lot about our team - first road game against a decent opponent (still not sure Miami is better than Toledo though).

yrro's picture

My thoughts:

1) Bauserman looked bad. However, he also had no interceptions and only one sack. You don't pull your starter while you're ahead, even if he's having a bad day. Miller might have gotten us a few more scrambling first downs, but I also expect he would have thrown at least one more interception, and that could have been enough to lose the game. We don't know, we don't see them in practice. But Miller is a freshman - remember how awful it was watching TP as a freshman? And TP was one of the most successful freshman starting quarterbacks in *history*. The odds are not good, no matter how many stars they have. Matt Barkley was a 5* freshman and expected current top draft pick, and he lead his team to a whopping 5-4 conference record.

He missed a couple open receivers, but I also get the impression that our freshman receivers weren't getting particularly open for him. I do wish on a couple occasions he would have scrambled for a yard or two instead of tossing it away right away, though.

2) The bigger problem than Bauserman was our lack of running game. They were stacking the box and coming hard on a run blitz. But somehow it never seemed like we got them to bite on play action. The whole game felt like Beckman was inside Bollman's head.

3) The o-line didn't play well, but Hyde didn't help them. I saw about 5 yards total that were his fault that game. He missed what holes were there completely, and more than once just put his shoulder down and let himself be tackled isntead of really fighting for yards. As a running back, you have to expect to win 1 on 1 match-ups. He doesn't. I'm really curious why Berry didn't see more game time.

4) Smith can take a seat on the bench. Better luck next year, and learn how to hold onto the ball.

5) Pass protection was actually pretty good. Too bad Bauserman didn't find anyone to throw it to. I'm really curious how much of that was him, and how much was the receivers. The receivers make me more worried.

6) Our corners were doing an awful job of getting off their blocks on those screens. Every time I think I saw the boundary corner taken completely out of the play. Aside from that play, the defense had a good day. Too bad that play lead to two touchdowns and several first downs besides. Also, Tyler Moeller looks like a shadow of his old self... which really, really sucks.

7) As bad as we looked... if Toledo came out and played like that every game, I'd expect them to finish at least middle of the pack in the Big 10. They came out on fire, and had a good plan against this team. Eric Paige is the real deal.

millertime2011's picture

you talk about bauserman not being terrible but our run game not working because they were stacking the box and not biting on play action...this is because bauserman WAS terrible. they were baiting him to throw because he couldnt make any good throws. He completed a few down field but only to WIDE open receivers. He even missed a bunch of wide open receivers. I've always thought Fickell would be a great head coach, but this just shows that he wasn't close to ready for the responsibility. Not putting miller in for a snap was a mistake that will come back to haunt us.

tampa buckeye's picture

You would think with 8 in the box Joey B could complete a pass.  Rod Smith will be fine.  I hope we get hall and Howard back next week.

Shazier and D Clarke are playing like men.  Missed tackles almost cost them the game.

Better to learn from a win then a loss.

Sgt. Elias's picture

I am terribly vexed. This is why you don't eff your teammates by taking impermissible benefits...

"Paging Ty Moeller, where art thou?" He looks rusty as hell, missed tackles all over. DB's saved our bacon. Ugly football.

"Okay -- I've got an El Camino full of rampage here."

slippy's picture

I've said it before and will say it again.  Moeller was never good.  Kid has played 1 good game in his life.  You don't miss 2 full years of football after being mediocre and become good.  He's just not a good enough athlete to be out there.

tampa buckeye's picture

The d line is to blame on those screen plays.  They have to read the screen better and react.  What was up with Williams?

William's picture

Our fancy Star position did jack shit for us against those screens. if i'm not mistaken that's what that hybrid position was designed for, to stop teams from spreading the ball and killing us on quick hit plays and screens.

Matt's picture

Man Joe Pa already put Matt Moxie McGloin in there.

millertime2011's picture

why are people assuming miller would've thrown a pick or made some mistake? he was 8 of 12 last week, and on his 4 incompletions, 3 of them were drops on easy catches, and one was him throwing it away after his feel helped him avoid a sack that bauserman would've taken. Bauserman threw away a lot of balls today when there were receivers wide open. he also was checking down before he was done with his drops. Fickell dropped the ball (worse than rod smith haha) by not getting miller in early and often.

Idot08bojangles's picture

Rooster started to say it, but this really reminded me of almost the entire 2002 season. A LOT.

Let's keep in mind. Toledo beat a combination of our backups and third stringers. And some fourth teamers. woopeeedddeeedddoooooo.

Also, Beckman was on the coaching staff at Ohio State for a few seasons, so he had intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the silver bullets. And we know HE'S A MAN, because he worked under Mike Gundy (who, as it turns out, is 40. Surprised you didn't know that...huh).

Let's not all abandon ship just yet.

Keep calm and trust the defense....

+1. Miami might not be better than Toledo. All we can do is trust that our coaches will make the adjustments that they're being paid to make. Getting Hall back would be nice, too. One week at a time...

jenks's picture

+1 too. It might lead to a heart attack, but I'll sacrifice my health for another title if it has to be done like 2002.

OHIOinME's picture

The Defense was not physical.   More accuately the back DB's (back 7); They didn't come off blocks and they have been missing TFL.  Even Tyler Moeller has had issues with bad angles. WFT is going on; it's 1/11 baby.  Get it done.

The O-line couldn't run block either and the running backs ran soft 70% of the time.

buckeyedude's picture

Wow. All of a sudden it seems, people are crapping on Moeller. I still think this OSU defense can be really good, but they need to go back to Tackling 101.

It's this offense that concerns me. I believe if Fickell sticks 100% with The Baus, we could drop a few games.

And let's say The Baus gets hurt, which is a real possibility. Is Fickell going to go with Braxton then? Why he didn't get Braxton in for a few snaps anyway, is beyond me, but I'm not the coach.  I hope he isn't going to be too stubborn and make a Jackson/Germaine error.

With the exception of actually winning this video describes our performance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zX4ox7aX_wc Also how in the Hell do we give up 292 yards passing to Toledo?

buckeyedude's picture

Because Toledo has big big uglies, decent QB, very good team speed, and a Heisman candidate(IMO) receiver in Eric Page. Thomas is very good also. Don't you guys get it? Toledo has beaten: Colorado, State Penn, Minnesota, Michelin, Purdon't, Indiana and Pittsburgh when they were ranked #9. Am I missing anybody?

We are so spoiled if OSU doesn't roll over every team by 40 pts, yous guys think we suck. I disagree. But need to get better. Much better.

Bucksfan's picture

Dude, get with it.  This is Ohio State.  You don't get pushed around by Toledo, I don't care how many BCS conference also-rans they've beaten.  NO EXCUSE FOR TODAY'S EFFORT BY OUR LINES.  NONE.  Toledo is no Pac-10 or SEC champion out there.  Gimme a break.  This kind of shit won't get it done.

yrro's picture

In a very obviously rebuilding year, playing our second and third string at half of the positions? Hyde is our fourth string running back. The O-line didn't get a ton of push, but Boom would have run for 150 with what they were giving him.

Bucksfan's picture

Message to Offensive and Defensive lines:  Either come to play or fuck off.

741's picture

Miller should have played half of this game.

We should have had a walk on competition for kicker during the off season. Basil still sucks.

741's picture

Also, god help us if Hall is not cleared to play for week three. Smith might end up being great, but he needs to sit down for a while. Two very, very bad fumbles.

I just hope Boom's little ass is getting stronger, angrier, meaner every single day of his suspension.

Jugdish's picture

We need a dual threat like Miller to run the Bucks. The O-line played decent for Miller but Baus needs so much more. Miller has shown that he can pass and can find more receivers than Baus. The defense was sluggish at best today. Klein overran some plays which made Toledo look better than they were. Our D-backs played well. It would have been a miserable loss if they didn't. The D-line needs to watch Simon to see how it is done. It is never too early to plan for the future as in the last 5 games of the season. Baus should be the backup to Miller.

Remember to get your wolverine spade or neutered. TBDBITL

Buckeyejason's picture

Bauserman needs to be sat down. We gain nothing from him playing any more games.

Bad coaching today obviously.O-line was in a "pillow fight" and the backs lack vision big time.

Roderick Smith needs to be sat down as well, Why is Berry not getting carries? I don't know.
Dominick Clark should not be benched when Howard is eligible! He looks like our best corner and just makes plays. Stick with him and Robey.

All in all when more than half your team is either injured or suspended..its hard to expect to be dominant.

As I've said all along, Devin Smith is our best reciever, as far as explosive playmaker goes. Reed looks like a good possesion guy.

Oh so they are hitting each other harder in practice then in the games?  Great.  I'd bench whoever had the most missed tackles for Shazier.  Take away two missed tackles and a blocked punt and its a shutout.

Real simple if you can't tackle you can't play.  #26, #32, #42 COME ON MAN!?

O-H Kee Pa's picture

Per ESPN, Smith is NOT confident that Hall, Howard, and Brown will be back for Miami.

Buckeyejason's picture

Smith may be fine. But "when" Hall comes back..whenever that is, he won't see the field the rest of the year as well as next season probably..considering Hall Hyde and Berry "should" all be here next season. Hope he's patient because I don't see him being a #1 back until 2013
