Ohio State released game notes and the week one depth chart for Saturday's game against Akron. You can click on the link below to check it all out, but here are the main things to take away:

-There has been no starting quarterback named, as the position has "Joe Bauserman OR Braxton Miller" inserted into the number one slot. I'm sure we'll see both players in action and Luke Fickell will shed some light on this at his presser tomorrow.

-Jordan Hall is the number one tailback in place of Boom Herron with "Carlos Hyde OR Rod Smith" as the number two. Jaamal Berry has been hampered by a hamstring injury, but it's interesting that he is not listed within the top three backs.

-Verlon Reed and Philly Brown are your starting receivers, backed up by Chris Fields and true frosh Evan Spencer. Note, TY Williams is not in the two-deep.

-As expected, your starting offensive line, left to right is: Norwell, Mewhort, Brewster, Hall, and Shugarts. Let's hope for no injuries as the second team includes two walk-ons in Eric Kramer at LT and Ivon Blackman at LG and three true freshmen in Chris Carter at LG, Brian Bobek at C, and Antonio Underwood at RT. This basically confirms Corey Linsley is suspended to start the season.

-Storm Klein is your starting MIKE, while Etienne Sabino gets the nod at SAM. It does appear that Klein will be the one coming off the field when Tyler Moeller is featured at STAR though. Ryan Shazier (WILL), Tony Jackson (MIKE), and Chris Maxwell (SAM) are your back-ups, and it appears Curtis Grant has some more work to do in order to break into the second unit.

-Bradley Roby has won the battle to start opposite Travis Howard at corner. Backing them up are Dom Clarke and true frosh Doran Grant, meaning Dionte Allen is the fifth corner.

-Orhian Johnson starts at safety opposite CJ Barnett, meaning Christian Bryant will be the first safety off the bench, as well as the first STAR off the bench.

-George Makridis starts the season as your long-snapper, but don't count out freshman Bryce Haynes who will continual to battle for a starting gig.

-Finally, your punt returner is Jordan "Do It All" Hall and your kick returner is "Jordan Hall OR Chris Fields" with true freshmen "Devin Smith OR Evan Spencer" backing them up. Jaamal Berry must either be hurt worse than we thought or in the dog house.

That's it for now. What say you?

Surprised that Evan Spencer has eclipsed Devin Smith.  Was hearing that it would be the reverse.  I'd prefer Smith's size to be on the field, given Philly and Reed's lack of size.

I think you will see both players on the field this year. When thinking Evan Smith see Robiskie, Brian

I dunno, with Reed/Brown/Spencer/Fields in the two deep, with Posey coming back in the 6th game, and with Stoney, Fragel, Heurmann, and Hall as legitimate non-WR targets for the QB, I would think that we would redshirt one of either Spencer or Smith.  All the same, Smith is still listed as the fourth option the KR spot, so there's at least that to indicate that the coaches disagree with me.

Also, "Evan Smith" = lovechild of Evan Spencer and Devin Smith.  Great WR prospect.

Terrifying fact: Bauserman has not started a game at QB since his senior season in highschool -- in 2003.  Why would the press release share that tidibit with us?  SELF-TROLL'D

Wow, a lot of young depth on the two-deep. This team will be filthy next season.

I was thinking this to myself last night.  If all NFL eligible juniors/sophomores stay, this is easily a top 3 team.  While I'm still optimistic about this season and think 10-2 is a good possibility, next year this team will murder fools.

Yes, and the more live action Miller gets, the better they will be next season.

LOL.  The opposing backfield hasn't a chance in hell.

guessing sabino hand is better?

The name Bradley Robey scares me. .........But like I know anything. The coaches know more and if they think he's the best to start opposite of Howard than best it is. I just don't wanna see one of our corners getting beat up by a relatively good passing team.

Also.....I work at the airport and Eddie George came into town today from Nashville. Didn't get a chance to get a cell phone pic with him but from my perspective the dude is jacked. Made me look like a twig.

Roby's name should inspire confidence. The only reason he wasn't a top 10 CB prospect out of high school was because he played on the other side of the ball until his senior year I believe. All the scouting reports had him as a complete natural at the position. Besides, he beat out Dominic Clarke, who filled in admirably in the Sugar Bowl last season.

Apparently on page 2 (cuz I don't see it, but according to Rittenberg's twiiter) it says "And Coach Tressel will hold his press conference at noon"

I am glad to see Jordan Hall finally get a crack at starting.  I am hoping he performs well and keeps his job!

I've started stretching in case we need another WR. I'm ripped like Jim Carey. Just through up 20 reps of 85 lbs without breaking a sweat. Can't wait!

Couple things come to mind. The offensive line and the Linebackers.

This is OHIO STATE!! Our second team LB's and O-line shouldn't be WAlK-ONS!?!?!

Tommy Brown and Curtis Grant, you guys can't beat Walkons!?!?!? Unbelievable! Get your shit together and play to your god gifted physicak ability!

Ok that's enough ranting for now, Can't wait till Saturday

Take a deep breath fellow Buckeye... The OL will get Adams and Linsley back from suspension and the OL 2-deep will look less frightful...

As far as the LBs go, I merely presume that Vrabel & Fickell are sending a message to young Curtis Grant. Reminds me of Mr. Sabino... Also, it really sucks not seeing Dorian Bell's name on the roster...

GO BUCKS!!!

Don't text while driving.

acBuckeye's picture

I agree. Bell would have been a monster. Could you imagine a starting LB corps consisting of Bell, Sabino and Grant!?!?! The All-Decapitation Team.

Buckeyejason's picture

Sam Longo transferring makes zero sense at this point. He wouldve been valuable to this team.

2012 & 2013 we should be primed for some national Titles if the chips sTack right.

Very suprised about Devin Smith, although I know he'll break out this year and be a key player.

I agree with this 100%.  I've thought this even before spring ball.  Let's hope we're right on this and the kid blows up this year.

Year after year after year... no depth at O line.  I don't get it.   Can we hire some dude from Wisconsin or Iowa to help us out with O line recruiting?  Bribe 'em with more corned beef sandwiches?

Colin's picture

Then our linebackers and D line wouldn't be nearly as deep or strong. We recruit to be especially good on defense.

acBuckeye's picture

Its not about the recruiting of O-linemen that we aren't very good at. Its that Bollman sucks at developing the talent he has. Iowa and Wisky know how to develop their guys, even if they aren't highly regarded out of HS.

Cobrakai's picture

I like Jordan Hall, but he's always reminded me more of Brandon Saine than a pounding run-between-the-tackles type back.  I hate to be a naysayer, but I don't see where the offense is going to come from with Buaserman/Hall as the starting backfield.

acBuckeye's picture

Hall won't get more than 10 carries a game. He'd be done by October if he did. Hyde will get a ton of carries if the reports of how he has looked in camp translate to game day. Plus, Hall is much shiftier than Saine ever was. Saine never ran with a purpose, he just ran. Hall at least knows what he can and can't do.

Buckeyejason's picture

Did you watch any games last year? Hall is electric. So quick that he gets through the holes in a blink of an eye. He's easily the 2nd best back on the roster behind Herron.
He came in as a freshman in 09 and was straight killing dudes! Everyone thinks because he looks soo small that he won't be good, WRONG!!

Now Bauserman on the other hand....

BUCKEYES BABY!

Cobrakai's picture

I hope your right, but like the article points out, I don't see Hall as a workhorse like Beanie/Boom are.  I agree that he had some nice plays last year, but last year we had Pryor's scrambling to keep defenses honest, this year I don't think any DC is going to be worried about Bauserman's mobility.  Hall is a great compliment to Boom, but with both Boom and Adams out I have my doubts about whether he can carry the offense (which he'll have to do if Bauserman starts).  I will be extremely happy if he proves me wrong.

Buckeyejason's picture

I agree that he's not a workhorse back. He's def not that. But he doesn't have to be, throw in Hyde or Smith and even Berry down the strech and you are running backs with fresh legs all game.I see Hall gettin 15-20 carries a game the 1st 5 maybe.

As far as Bauserman goes, if this episode goes like the ones we saw in the past, Miller will be taking over fairly quick.

BUCKEYES BABY!

Buckeyejason's picture

Yes Bollman is exremely questionable on his O-line development. Iowa turned a a former Tight End into an All-American and 1st round pick at Left Tackle. We bring in in H.S. All-Americans and they dissapear (Mitchum, Connor Smith).

Speaking of O-line, is Mike Adams really as good as all the hype he's getting. Being mentioned as the top tackle in the nation and future 1st round pick? That's be a great boost to our past O-line misery.

BUCKEYES BABY!

acBuckeye's picture

The line run-blocked better last year than they had since '06, IMO. Beanie made the line look a lot better than they really were in the years between. Pass-blocking, however, has always been an Achillies heel of the line, and Pryor got them out of some rough spots the last few years.

As for Adams, i'm not totally sure what to think of him yet. Brewster however, is the real deal.
