Whispers of a Redshirt for Sabino

By Alex on September 3, 2010 at 6:46p

Someone with knowledge of the situation is telling us that LB Etienne Sabino will redshirt this season. Sabino did not see action last night against Marshall, and our source tells us the move is voluntary on Sabino's part in order to create separation between himself and Brian Rolle at the MIKE spot.

If true, Sabino will have two years remaining at OSU and will likely be your starting middle linebacker in 2011 and 2012. As long as he is not needed this season, I think this is a great move for Sabino as he allows himself to get two years as a starter and can continue to learn the position from a mental standpoint. Being that the Bucks substitute the STAR out for the SAM often in what is becoming ultimately their base defense, the permanent move to MIKE is a smart one on Sabino's part.

The source we have is reliable, although we cannot 100% confirm the redshirt at this point. Stay tuned for updates and verification, but if true, what are your thoughts?

Did I miss something along the way? What's the deal with Storm?

Storm will back-up at MIKE this year but for the depth it was Rolle first then Sabino OR Klein listed #2....I think they kind of knew what was brewing...we will see how things play out in the years to come though in terms of position shake out...I think you may see Sweat at SAM,  Sabino at MIKE, and Klein/Bell at WILL next year

Good move.  After missing out on Hicks and almost certainly DePriest we need a little help at linebacker.  One more year of eligibilty from a freak like Sabino can't hurt (although him getting a better grasp of the game would help a lot more).

Sabino has the physical gifts to play at the next level.  If he works at the non-physical aspects of the game, he can be something special.  I think this move is best for his career, and helps to defray some of the swing-and-missed on LBers in the past few years.  I believe it will take patience and maturity to make a move like this work -- you don't want Sabino to grow complacent and act out by violating team rules or something along thos lines -- but Sabino seems like a solid character guy.  Let's hope he has the fire to improve.

So that is why I did not see him last night! Makes sense! A good sign that he is doing this on his own. Shows how unselfish the kid is! I was looking forward to seeing him this year!

Voluntary, I'm super cool with it.

That answers the question as to why he did not play thursday night. Thanks

I like the idea of Sabino redshirting but I still have major doubts that he'll ever start for OSU.

The idiots on Bucknuts were saying its a conspiracy that he wasn't playing and were comparing Tressel and his staff to a modern day Hitler and gustapo saying they were racist and he wasn't playing cause he was black. I couldn't leave that one alone for days. Just stupid.

Supposedly it was a decision reached after advice from the ultimate team player, B Rolle. Good advice.
