Moeller Assault Rumor Confirmed

Tyler Moeller's family issued a "thank you" for the outpouring of fan support and prayers and in doing so confirmed the cause of his injury:

We were on a family vacation in Florida, celebrating his grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary following the end of the OSU summer quarter. On the first evening of vacation, Tyler was with several family members, including his uncle at a popular restaurant/bar; it was there that Tyler was assaulted. He never saw it coming and did nothing to provoke it, which is substantiated by neutral parties. The subject was immediately arrested and the case is currently in the hands of the State Attorney's Office.

Tyler received immediate medical attention for a head injury suffered as the result of the assault, was admitted in to the emergency room and spent several days in a Florida ICU unit. We're very appreciative of the care that we received there.

Once back in Columbus, Tyler followed up with additional medical treatment which resulted in a decision last Friday to admit Tyler to University Hospital for surgery that was performed early Saturday morning. The surgery was very successful and Tyler was released on Monday. He is now at home recuperating and hopes to return to Columbus shortly.

Moeller's mom also said he's chomping at the bit to get back at it again. We can't wait.

How does this sh*t just happen? How do you get sucker punched in a bar/resturaunt completely unprovoked? Especially with your family around? I hope they throw the book at the guy who did it.

It's the worst stroke of bad luck I've ever heard of. I hope he continues to feel better, and can get back to football at some point. What a shame.

This is one of those things that could of happened to anybody. It's odd it was an unprovoked sucker punched assault. It's also odd this happened to a future high profile LB at OSU.

The dirtbag who sucker-punched him will probably brag about it the rest of his life; and that pisses me off more.

Maybe, but he'll also be grabbing his ankles for the next 3 to 5 in a florida state penn, so it evens out.

It seems strange that a "rumor" of an "assault" is considered to be confirmed by a family statement, when in fact an arrest and police report are public records: those records are a more reliable confirmation of what might have actually happened, than is a statement by the mother of someone involved in the incident.

If someone was arrested, then how can the incident be a "rumor"?

And wouldn't the police report (a record for public inspection) be a more descriptive (and maybe more reliable) account of what happened, than a statement from a family member?

No insinuation or doubt is meant there, regarding the family statement: just the strangeness of having no details available about the name of the assailant or the arresting authority or the specific place the assault supposedly happened...

We live in an electronic media age where these details are usually reported lightning quick, yet they are strangely absent in this particular matter.

Yeah, I was kind of hoping for some more information related to the case as well. Hopefully that information will start to pop up. My guess is that the family didn't want to name names in their statement, which I get.

Regardless of the circumstances, its unfortunate for him. Hopefully he'll be cleared to play next year. Better that they found out he had swelling on the brain (i think?) before he took or gave a hit. Could have been a really bad situation.

I feel really bad for Tyler but I am glad that he is getting the help he needs. Also, I clicked on Ray Small's Twitter and I think that these players needs to be aware of the microscope they are under. Ray's page is full of foul language and racial slurs. The one that caught my eye was duron carter calling Small a "Ni**a." I am sure that Cris Carter did not teach him that language and I wonder how long it will be till players get censored. I'm all for free speech but some reporter from Michigan or Florida will get ahold of this and it will be all over ESPN by midnight.

My understanding is that charges have not yet been filed.

If we're going to get all internet-investigative about this, there are a few points that need correcting. While the rumor wasn't completely "confirmed" by the mother of a "victim", the rumor of the cause of the injury was. Until a couple days ago we were still hearing 7-on-7 drills as a possible cause.

And no, a police report wouldn't technically be more reliable given that a police report would include statements from witnesses, which in this case would include family members.

I agree, though, this should have been more transparent from the start. Where's The Smoking Gun when you need them?

Could someone please translate this into Twitter-Ebonics for Ray Small? "You're gonna be Tweeting from the bench (again) if you keep this up, moron."

For what it's worth, I am rocking a Scarlet headband with Moeller#26 on it with Scarlet Block O running socks and possibly some customized shorts at the Virginia Beach Rock and Roll Half Marathon in a few weeks. Any one else running this or have other tribute ideas????

Considering he threw 4 in his first start, not to mention a renewed emphasis on the pass game and going downfield more, I'll take the over.

4 in his first start, eight over the next eight games.... and none against Penn State, Texas, and USC.

I'll take the under and give 3:1 odds. Are you crazy? I love him, but inside the 10 he'll run. At best, he'll get 20.

That's being a bit generous in my book. Only two Buckeyes have ever thrown for more than 25 TDs in a season: Smith had 30 in 2006 and Hoying had 29 in 1995.

Not saying he's going to blow it away, but I just think we'll be going down field a lot more this year, like in 2006 when Troy had 30 and 2007 when Boeck had 25. Is somewhere in between that too hard to fathom? Especially considering TP is far more gifted than either. I'm still taking the over.
