Players Sound Confident About Wells

The only official news out of Ohio State today is that Beanie is still in a protective boot and he had an MRI though the results weren't known.

The better news comes from various players who've chimed in after speaking with Wells. Both Brian Hartline and Ryan Pretorious have indicated they expect Beanie to return soon.

The next doctor with info was recent verbal commit Jaamal Berry. The RB from Florida saw Beanie at the WHAC on Sunday:

"He said he's going to be OK," said Berry, who was visiting from Miami Palmetto High School. "I asked him how he was doing, and he seemed cool with it. He wasn't down or anything. He was like, 'No problem'. I guess he'll be back, if not this week (against Ohio University), he'll be fine by next week".

What if this is a well thought out and executed plan by Sen. Tressel to leave USC guessing if Wells will be ready for the big game. Just keep everyone guessing until kick off and then let Beanie off the leash to run over USC defenders like a horse trampling dirt.

Steve on 1 September 2008 - 7:41pm #

AR, I had the same thought at one point. But then I wondered why more teams didn't fake injury reports on a regular basis...it seems like it'd be a good strategy. I haven't looked, but I bet it's against NCAA rules to do something like that. Plus it's a distraction, and it's really tough to make sure a conspiracy works.

Beanie is hurt. I hope to God he gets better.

vico on 1 September 2008 - 7:57pm #

a player on the Buckeyes roster just recently said the same: http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/f...

The poster on BuckeyePlanet has been reliable in the past and was the one that broke news of Chris Watt heading to Notre Dame. He inadvertently revealed the source, but that was later edited out so that Jim Tressel didn't kill him (the source in question).

bc on 1 September 2008 - 7:58pm #

communists over at Bucknuts make you take the other stuff down?

Jason on 1 September 2008 - 8:08pm #

BC, we took it down on our own. We don't want to court any trouble -- I've seen Steve Helwagen's biceps before.

Alright, we all know that Tress can be a bit creative. We also all know that Tress HIGHLY values possession of the ball and avoiding turnovers. Any possibility that this is a planned conspiracy theory went out the door when Beanie fumbled that handoff. Even in a game that the Bucks are blowing out in the third quarter, there is simply no way Tress gives up the ball at the goal line in order to disguise a Trojan horse for USC.

Now, if Beanie is indeed alright, or will at least be ready by the SC game, it is entirely plausible that Tress is playing a little dumb just to keep SC on their toes. That sort of thing happens in college ball regularly and is precisley the reason that the NFL has some rather regulated and organized methods for handling injury reports.

So, is Tress milking the uncertainty of this injury to keep USC guessing? Highly likely. Is Beanie too hurt to play against USC? Still very likely-and you can bet if he is we may not hear about it until OSUs first offensive possession in sunny Cali. But is this whole injury staged? I'm going with highly unlikely to impossible-and I'm leaning towards impossible.

I'd just like to say I have zero confidence in UCLA to beat Tennessee. Man, I hate the SEC. I have to root for UCLA.

Jason on 1 September 2008 - 8:51pm #

Oh yeah. Big special teams play out of the Bruins.

And Poe, you know Neuheisel needs his own team to complete that five-team parlay.

Chris on 1 September 2008 - 8:53pm #

Is that a spot-card hanging out of Neuheisel's pocket? Go Bruins!

Tito on 1 September 2008 - 8:54pm #

Poe, it looks like UCLA has an early lead against the speeeed of Tennesse. I hope UCLA and continue to play well against that speeeed. I don't know how they are handling all of that speeed.

vico on 1 September 2008 - 8:54pm #

I'm not liking how UCLA needs to blitz in order to get pressure, and Tenny's wideouts look like they might break one before too long. I still don't think UCLA wins this one, though I'd love to be wrong.

But boy howdy, that was just about the worst jailbreak I've ever seen on a punt play. There were about 5 Bruins that could've blocked that.

bup bup bup on 1 September 2008 - 8:57pm #

there's been some noise on buckeyeplanet that also suggests Beanie could even play against OU if he absolutely had to. obviously he won't, but i think that gives you an idea of the severity of the injury.

here's my personal opinion: it's an injury, but Beanie might've made it look far worse than it was due to him being nervous about getting injured. once he felt something wrong, i'm thinking he assumed the worst and freaked out. not that i blame the guy (i'd respond the exact same way), but i think a lot of it was just Beanie being afraid that he'd broken something.

Anonymous Internet Person on 1 September 2008 - 9:11pm #

Is that "beanie being beanie"? He will be ready to go, it's all hush hush of course, who gives a shit about ohio u anyway. Beanie is a freakin tank, and it will take something broken to keep him out of that game. Nothing is broken. So this is perfect to keep U S u C k guessing. What really sucks is beanie gets a td on that carry and you know he is done for the day...period. That's not a mistake on the sens part. Just freakish bad luck

Jason on 1 September 2008 - 9:43pm #

Neuheisel. Genius.

vico on 1 September 2008 - 9:44pm #

Say what Buckeye fans will about Todd Boeckman, but we should thank our lucky stars that at least he's not that Craft kid from UCLA. Egads.

Chris on 1 September 2008 - 9:45pm #

Craft is now 7/18 with 4 INT. Nice.

Issac on 1 September 2008 - 9:56pm #

I agree with Vico. I know I sometimes harp on what Boeckman can't do but one thing I've seen so much of this weekend is bad QB play. Granted, YSU isn't exactly a juggernaut but I came away from Saturday very impressed with the way all 3 QBs managed the offense, especially Pryor. He had no delay of game penalties, no timeouts taken to avoid delay of game penalties and, like Bauserman and Boeckman, just looked very crisp. For a kid in his first college action, that was very encouraging to see.

JT Bucks on 1 September 2008 - 10:08pm #

Rory Nicol offensive player of the game?? I thougt Small or Posey...I am in Knoxville watching this offensive showdown with UCLA, Vol Fans are shitting a brick right now. Only thing keeping them in this game is Craft is god awful. I don't think he could even start at the whore Ann Arbor.

Jason on 1 September 2008 - 10:35pm #

Craft is starting to feel it. And by "feel it" I mean not throwing balls into white jerseys.

Poe McKnoe on 1 September 2008 - 11:05pm #

I like the Vols safeties. That's it. They bring some lumber.

Craft, it seems, will not set the NCAA record for interceptions.

And I love the ESPN HD, the angles, and the closeness of the view. Watching BTN, I always feel like I have my second year tickets again.

vico on 1 September 2008 - 11:09pm #

Wow... Tennessee... wow. Mind you, Tennessee... and by extension: SEC, Tennessee played the entire first half with 12 men on defense, with one of them lining up under center for the Bruins.

darren on 1 September 2008 - 11:13pm #

wow, just think of this: no word on whether or not he will play is said to the media and saine gets the start at u$c. then on the second possession, beanie comes in...

thatd be cool.

Jason on 1 September 2008 - 11:16pm #

That facemask was Spitler-esque.

vico on 1 September 2008 - 11:38pm #

Wow. This second half has been incredible.

Jason on 1 September 2008 - 11:38pm #

Viva Craft.

vico on 1 September 2008 - 11:44pm #

For the life of me, I'll never understand the logic behind the short kickoff after taking a lead in the waning moments of the fourth quarter. The clock is going to stop anyways, you're not increasing your odds of a miscue on the receiving team and you're just giving them better field position.

vico on 1 September 2008 - 11:45pm #

Sigh... my point exactly.

Jason on 1 September 2008 - 11:54pm #

Yeah, squibs and the prevent defense goes together like a peanut butter and jelly fail sandwich.

vico on 1 September 2008 - 11:58pm #

Did that offensively crippled UCLA team really just beat the no. 18 ranked SEC East champions? Did that just happen?

Let the record really show: Nothing is more beautiful than His Coachness, Sir Rick Neuheisel.

vico on 2 September 2008 - 12:09am #

oh, and I know I'm probably pissing into the wind on this one, but I hope Jim Heacock watched and saw what a crafty, aggressive blitz scheme, even from a 4-3, is capable of doing to opposing offenses.

Jason on 2 September 2008 - 12:09am #

His beauty is unquestioned and I will be going to bed a happy man this evening.

Mitch G. on 2 September 2008 - 8:40am #

BEANIE WILL BE BACK.... no grand conspiracy--it not JT's style, Beanie just freaked. It could work to our advantage, although I think Carroll is smart enough to know that Beanie will play in a game of this magnitude.

Joe Fox on 2 September 2008 - 10:26am #

Beanie's got to toughen up. I know he was legitimately hurt, but he's got to get tougher. He gets dinged a lot, and it certainly doesn't look good to anyone watching at the next level. If Emmitt can lower his pads to move a pile of Eagles on third and one, all with a separated shoulder....

That UCLA game was a hoot. My best friend is a Tennessee alum, but I couldn't help but enjoy an anemic PAC-10 offense beating an SEC stalwart that's just loaded with SPEEEEEEEEED.

Principal Skinner on 2 September 2008 - 10:44am #

Nine-and-Three-Earle sounds pretty confident in today's Dispatch:

"I would think that probably (Daniel) Boom Herron, and Brandon Saine, and Maurice Wells will have to pick up the slack for a while," Bruce said. "Personally, I think Beanie will come back after the Ohio game at pretty full strength.

Mitch G. on 2 September 2008 - 11:21am #

Beanie is awesome, but I agree with Joe, he must toughen up--- the way he went down made everyone think he had a major problem.... and he coughed up the ball. No biggie against YSU, but imigaine it was in Madison on a cold rainy nite and he coughs up the ball after a tweak on the 2 1/2--yikes. I hope he recovers quick and I hope he sees a sports psychologist. I think he is gun-shy after being injured last year...

Chris on 2 September 2008 - 12:25pm #

Tressel sounds extremely confident about Beanie during this presser...

He basically said the medical staff list him as doubtful for Saturday. Tressel saw Beanie at 10:30 and Beanie told him he felt great.

Jason on 2 September 2008 - 1:10pm #

So, I guess the real story is why did Beanie go down like he'd been shot?

Is he that guy on the team that gets hurt all of the time only he's not really hurt (every team at every level has one of those guys)?

I love Beanie and will strongly consider naming my first born after him, but this is looking like soccer all of a sudden.

GoBucks89 on 2 September 2008 - 3:43pm #

I wouldn't read much into the way Beanie went down. Sometimes you just get that sharp pain and the suddenness of it causes you to think "it's the big one!" (apologies to Redd Foxx). I think from that point on the trainers and medical people were just being cautious. After I saw Beanie come out of the locker room, I figured it wasn't too serious. He may sit out for the OU game, but wild horses couldn't keep him from making the trip to SC. If he's even remotely capable of running on the 13th, he will be out there.
