Henton Headed Home?

Ever since it became clear that the Buckeyes had a good shot at getting Pryor, we’ve been wondering about the fate of sophomore-to-be Antonio Henton. After getting off to a great start (in limited duty) last season, some naughty stuff went down. He was later reinstated and supposedly had climbed his way back into a position to be rumored as a change-of-play option in the MNC. He never saw the field that night and the next time we had a chance to see him on the field, he was outplayed by Bauserman.

There were rumors of a possible transfer to Georgia Southern back in late January, but today they kicked up again. And in earnest:

Ohio State quarterback Antonio Henton has reportedly told his Buckeye teammates he’s headed for GSU, an ESPN writer confirmed to the Statesboro Herald Wednesday. Georgia Southern’s B-term for summer classes begins next week, and second-year GSU coach Chris Hatcher said he couldn’t discuss transfers until then. Henton could not be reached for comment.

Henton, a 6-foot-2, 232 pound Fort Valley native, already has Georgia Southern ties – Eagle offensive coordinator Rance Gillespie was Henton’s high school head coach at Peach County. Henton was tabbed the 2005 Georgia Offensive Player of the Year as a senior when he helped his team to the Class AAA state title, the first in Peach County’s history. He threw for 2,117 yards and 30 touchdowns his senior year and was touted as one of the best multi-threat quarterback prospects in the country coming out of high school.

Then, this:

If Henton is headed South — and the Facebook never lies, we wish him the best of luck. He made a simple mistake hundreds of miles away from home and a change in scenery and some home-cooking should be just the thing to give him the best chance of furthering his football career beyond college.

And to the droids without any feeling besides Buckeye pain and joy, yes, that means one more scholarship for the ‘09 class.

Good. I love me some Henton, and I’m glad he’s going to get an opportunity to play. Sad that it isn’t going to be for us, but it was clear it wasn’t going to be his show.

bleah, that kinda sucks for him, he’s a guy who got caught in a few bad situations (both personal and on the field) and it just never really worked out for him here. hopefully moving back down to gawja is the best thing for him

He’s a talented kid. He can’t throw a 20-yard out, but that won’t matter as much on the level he intends to play.

Georgia Southern should be a great fit for him, and if he does well there, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him sign a free agent contract with the pros some day. His athleticism deserves a look.

You can’t blame a kid for wanting to play. He’s very talented and in the limited time I’ve seen him it looks like he has abilities very similar to Troy Smith.

I’m a GSU fan, and I must say, Ohio State fans are showing to be very classy with their comments to this situation! Good luck this year guys!

  6. Jim says:

Good luck A. Henton. As a Buckeye, I would like to see you do well. And beat the “DOWGS”, who would not give you the oppertunity out of High School..

Hey Joseph, we love our guys. Even the ones that never play. We wish above all else for them to enjoy a happy and meaningful life. And if that means they need to go somewhere else to do it, we don’t stop lovin ‘em. Anotnio was nothing if not classy, and you’ll enjoy having him. Good luck, and I’ll make sure i catch any games that get televised. :)

If that happens its unfortunate, but completely understandable. I wouldn’t want to sit behind All-World TP either. Henton has skills and should get to show them on the field, just doesn’t look like it will be at the Shoe.

Too bad… I really thought Henton was going to play a major role this year. It seems that the brush with the law last year soured JT’s view of Henton more than anyone thought. Schoenhoft was never a good fit for the program and Tressel let him know that after the Michigan game— Henton never saw the field during the LSU game and I think that was the foreshadowing of the future. IF JT truly had confidence in Henton he would have played and tried to change the momentum. By all accounts, he is a nice kid who made a mistake—- he deserves a chance and with golden boy Pryor at OSU that simply would never happen. I only hope that Pryor does not suffer any injuries because we will be wishing Henton never left….. good luck Antonio

I just hope it works out for everyone. It seems like we’ve seen this before where playing time shortage forces a transfer, but it doesn’t really work out at the new school either. The researchers at 11W could probably tick these off (McFadden, Moldanado, etc). Nick Goins is the only one I can think of that found some success later. AND…in addition to not getting more glory, the transferee squanders what can be a world-class education, plus the truly outstanding benefits of that come along with being a Buckeye football alum. Frequently even backups get a shot at the NFL….(Garcia, Zwick..).

    How ’bout an all-transfer team?

    GO BUCKEYES

    Nice family values
