The First Major Shot Has Been Fired

UPDATE: Now with new, working video and a NY Times link on the take.

And...

Or is that like the 34th shot? Anyway, Viva Leitch. And Buzz Bissinger may have anger issues.

Not to have a cock-measuring contest or anything, but I'm guessing the three writers of this site make comparable (or better) money than your typical sports reporter at our real and completely unrelated jobs. Then we come home and do this is a hobby. And best of all, we're all out of mom's basement.

Finally, I hate saying this, but Braylon Edwards seems to be pretty intelligent and on point.

i hate this guy. both him and mel kiper. theyre morons. they hate OSU so much. why? who knows. its because of them that Troy Smith was dropped to the 5th round...hes a legit late first/early second pick....

WOW, H. G. "Buzz" Bissinger, are you kidding me. Seriously, calm down, this is the world we live in. Fast paced information, we live in the "information age". i bet you don't own a computer and have never been on the internet...come on, and that's the only way you could not call yourself a hypocrite.
I guarantee in his line of work he's dug up some dirt about someone and wrote a story where it ruined or ended their lives in pro sports.... so don't go ranting and ravening on someone or a group...(and a large group) of people i might ad that want this. what a dick, that's all i can say... what an amazing asshole... go write a book...

If you think there is a GM on this planet that gives two shits about what Todd McShay or Mel Kiper says, you are not qualified to talk about the NFL.

Oh, and Will is a bit over the top in his post, referring to "we" and "us" when he was the one involved.

First of all, I think you're full of shit.

Secondly, I love the new assault by journalists on bloggers. It shows how out of touch they really are and gives bloggers more, entertaining thing to write about. They are all just upset because they are a part of a dying media. That's why so many journalists are now also writing blogs on the side. I just love the arrogance. Who do you think you are, you can write about sports? I guess that mean we aren't qualified to watch? Please. I've got to say though, this guy was more entertaining than anything I've read on a blog for a long time.

You should definitely read Deadspin, it's great site. Everything he writes, he refers to himself as 'we' it wasn't just this time. I think he says 'we' meaning the site and all those who work on it.

Buzz is the one that is full of shit. He showed what is wrong with this country and the media in general, the inablilty to adapt. All the 55+ year olds vote for "family values" even though those haven't exsisted in the same form since Roe vs Wade, they vote for the way things used to be instead of the way things WILL be. They want to keep things the same instead of adjusting to the future. The media wants to go back to Walter Chroinkite when the younger generations want more Leich, Shanoff, and Simmons. I can get dry diatribe from anywhere, but wit and sarcastic humor is what I want instead. Buzz is made b/c the younger crowd knows the names of bloggers more than his. He is a dinosaur and will soon fade to Bolivia with Tyson.

I love how Costas was reading the blog comments about Salisbury as if it was unique to blogs. You can see over-the-top comments by readers on pretty much any newspaper's online stories. And they're every bit as mind-numbing and profane as the ones that Costas read.

I'm ove 50.
My favorite blogs (sprots, politics, science - in that order) are what I check out every morning long before any traditional journalism sites.

I think Buzz just flunked his job intrview and won't be asked to be a guest commentator on any show soon (which is what he was going for).

Interesting how Costas sort of used someone else finger to poke Salisbury a bit.

Also interesting that they chose the moderator of a blog that has declined in popularity and entertainment value over the past couple of years. What they missed and hopefully will follow up on some time is a panel discussion between a half dozen "bloggers". I'd certainly like to hear the managers of MGoBlue, EDSBS, Welcome to Hogville, and our beloved 11W and maybe a few of the less popular more poorly run sites interact. There certainly is a difference in quality, content, and (dare I say it) professionalism in how blogs are run. PAinting blogs with one broad brush is not fair.

normally i think when blogs take on the big bad MAINSTREAM MEADIA (MSM, if you're reading mgoblog) the result is pretty dumb and pretty much just an exercise in futility

but that's one hell of a retarded youtube clip, and man what an asshole bissinger is. the anger directed at the deadspin guy is pretty ridiculous, although (and i can't believe i'm saying this) braylon nailed it when he compared these blogs to the paparazzi.

i think of the terrelle pyror photo with him and the sports car, or the brady quinn wedding photos, or any number of other things that are generally just character assassinations exacerbated by blogs. a lot of it IS mean spirited, because a lot of sports fans are mean spirited. i mean, i think blogs are great, and when it comes to reporting breaking sports news, most of the major ones are about as reliable as any "MSM" source. but let's not kid outselves here: sports blogs don't exist to convey important information quickly, they exist for our own amusement. and as long as sports fans find it funny to make fun of other teams' players and coaches while ignoring the human toll that might take on them, the mean spirited stuff is gonna continue.

also i think the overabundance of internet tough guys on blogs and sports forums make the situation about 20 times worse

Bup Bup Bup: I agree to a point. Gossip appeals to those unsavory aspects of our nature that make shows like Judge Judy and Entertainment Tonight popular. IF ESPN can come up with an equivalent of "TheSoup" they will. And there are a lot of immature and generally ignorant blogs for fans who like that stufff. (IS that the reason I have so much trouble finding reliiable SEC blogs?)

But the better blogs have good information, and they have it in a timely manner. You KNOW which ones fit that description because those are the ones you are reading. Yeah and sometimes they are funny and childish and probably unfair (I'd like 5 cents for each Charlie Weiss joke thisyear please). But so are we.

The professional news media displays a disgusting sense of arrogance!

I would, without hesitation, concede to the higher degree of journalistic skill that professional writers possess. However, it is just another business. Professional news writers are beholding to their management, as we all are in our own work places. Everything that is said, or not said, goes through a review process. Advertisers must be made happy, money must be made, legalities must be observed. You don't so much get a "news article" or "commentary", as you get another news product. That product is packaged to meet the needs of the news organization. They have a plan and strategy for everything. Journalists don't get free rein to express themselves, or do so at their own risk.

I can see, by the comments here, that people feel very strongly on this topic, as do I.

I love blogs. I like the freedom of expression, the arcane wit, and the personalities that go with. I am quite willing to accept the (generally) lower standard of blogs, because they come with a much higher degree of editorial freedom. Most blogs come with a stated bias, this blog is no exception. As a reader, I am free to agree or disagree with any and all content. I am totally free to voice my opinion (as Jason is free to delete it). There is true entertainment in genuine discourse, compared to digesting a packaged news product.

I want information, varied opinions, and a sense of fun. This is where I get it.

oh, and by the way, michigan still sucks.

I think a lot of blogs can certainly be nasty and some even have a tabloid sheen to them, but overall, they've done a great job adding to the discourse.

And like Will said, most fans realize that sports are just something to pass time and ultimately done matter in the grand scheme of life.

Two things:

1) Why are "traditional journalists" so angry and scared about bloggers? Some blogs are very professional and written with more journalistic integrety than say, the NEW YORK TIMES!. Others are a place to joke or spread gossip or naked pictures. Take them for what they are.

2) Blogs can also be a very valuable resource of information for people who want more than what the evening news or traditional dailies regurgitate. In my profession, I use blogs as an important resource and they help me tremendously.

#2 vs #3 matchup in LA sounds like a good time to me.

And just to be clear, the local (Dispatch) press has been nothing but completely cool to us. Despite the dumb stuff we can put out on occasion.

The perception of many that sports bloggers are basement dwellers and all that is a bit off base and possibly also played up. The vast majority of sports bloggers that I know with any type of readership are all talented guys. Considering that 95% of us have day jobs it only makes it that much more impressive.

I have to admit that the tabloid-y stuff and to some degree recruiting has me second-guessing a lot of stuff, but it's 2008. When in 2008, do like 2008.
