I echo that sentiment, Tom. Part of me likes to think that Jim Heacock took notes from last year's Rose Bowl for dealing with Michigan's zone blocking schemes. Hopefully same can be said for this game.
I can deal with this humiliating loss for the Illini because A) it's not the Buckeyes getting humiliated, most importantly and B) Michigan punked Florida when Chris Spielman (as far as I know) was the only ESPN broadcaster picking the Wolverines. What a pleasant surprise that was. Was that seriously the same Wolverine offense we held below 100yds?
It definitely wasn't the same offense. The month off clearly had a positive effect on the health of the wolverine's offense and it showed on the field today.
I couldn't help but shake my head at Mike Hart's reactions to his fumbling. No guy who just got done fumbling twice on any of my teams ever smiled and laughed. What a cocky *@$^&!@.
That was clearly m*ch*g*n's best defensive effort of the season, though. Maybe the lesson here really is to come straight at the read/option, disrupt it, get in the backfield before things get rolling, gamble on man-to-man outside, etc. I can excuse Heacock and Fickell for trying something - anything - to slow it down, but it seems the best approach anyone has yet figured out for it is to unplug it outright.
What was up with w*sc*ns*n? Horrible. Is it me, or did Bucky look fat and slow?
At least our league's hopes aren't being represented by Hawaii. I thought Georgia would win, but - wow.
The Spread Option is definitely best defended by being aggressive and disciplined. Hit people in the backfield and ask questions later. Pressure and HIT the QB right in the mouth. USC and UM proved it today.
Hawaii in a BCS Bowl game is a CRIME. It was a CRIME when they got in over Missouri, and the BCS officials should be prosecuted for STUPIDITY. The BCS is a SHAM for letting a team with a SOS ranked 115 anywhere near a BCS Bowl game.
Anybody who didn't think Hawaii was going to get their doors blown off in this game is either insane or ingesting illegal substances. Including Hawaii fans.
wasn't the Capital One Bowl Mark May's lead-pipe cinch among his confidence scores for that bowl season special in early December? If there was any humble pie eaten by May, I missed it.
Joe - I agree with you about Mike Hart - I actually had just flipped on the game after one of his fumbles but they were just showing him laughing and smiling on the sideline so i figured they had just scored 6 - weird reaction
Count me as one of the folks that thought Georgia-Hawaii would be close. Wow. Impressive win by the Dawgs.
And yes, the Trojans looked pretty awesome cleaning up the Illini, but there's something to be said about playing your bowl game right down the street from your dorm/apartment every year.
As a buckeye raised in the south, I hold extreme ill will towards the sec...but uga held their own. Michigan did make me peoud though...any day mark may is proven ignorant is a great day. Btw, turnovers um 4 uf o
"Anybody who didn’t think Hawaii was going to get their doors blown off in this game is either insane or ingesting illegal substances. Including Hawaii fans."
I agree. I told my wife before the game that if Georgia didn't absolutely destroy Hawaii then the game must be fixed. I saw Hawaii play against both San Jose State and Washington. They're basically a glorified 1-AA team. The only reason they were undefeated is that everyone on their schedule stunk worse than they did. Shame on the pollsters for having them ranked in the top 20. That was a wasted BCS slot for sure.
"I saw Hawaii play against both San Jose State and Washington."
Yeah, I saw those and one or two others that were absolutely forgettable. After watching them I was less than impressed with their defense, and thought a tough, fast defense could handle their offense. This is what happens when the media falls in love with a flashy offense. Then again, I shouldn't be surprised about them getting the slot when we have people in the media buying into the crap that LSU is "undefeated in regulation". What passes as intelligent conversation in this country is astounding.
I AGREE WITH TOM AND SVM---I WATCH A RIDCULOUS AMOUNT OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND ALTHOUGH I AM NO EXPERT, I HAVE SEEN THAT THE TEAMS THAT HAVE THE MOST SUCCESS AGAINST THE READ OPTION ARE THE ONES WHO AGRESSIVELY ATTACK IT. I GUARANTEE YOU THAT IS THE REASON FLORIDA LOST 4 GAMES THIS SEASON, ILLINOIS LOIST 4 GAMES THIS SEASON, AND WEST VIRGINIA LOST 2 AND A SHOT AT THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. TEAMS IN THE SOUTH SEEM TO HAVE FIGURED THIS OUT BEFORE THE MORE RIGID BIG-1O COACHES. THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THIS STRATEGY IS THAT ATTACKING AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE SO AGGRESSIVELY LEAVES RECEIVERS OPEN MAN TO MAN AND ALOT OF COACHES ARE AFRAID OF THE WHAT IF'S. THAT APPEARED TO BE THE THINKING IN THE ILLINOIS GAME THIS YEAR--WE SIMPLY WERE AFRAID TO COMMIT TO ATTACK MODE FOR FEAR OF GUESSING WRONG. THE FLORIDA GAME IS DIFFERENT BECAUSE SO MANY ERRORS WERE MADE---- HERE IS HOPING THAT NOW THAT RICHROD IS THE UM COACH OSU HAS LEARNED THE LESSON.
hawaii glorified 1-aa team? app st would destroy them.3 straight national champs says it all. hey buckeye fan the neers cant get games next year y dont you have us up to cbus next year.

I hope OSU's defensive coaches take notes on how USC is attacking the Illini offense...and NOT sitting back on their heels waiting for the Illini.
That was a tough game to stomach. This type of win will elevate USC to the media darlings again.

Here's to hoping plaing within earshot of one's dormroom isn't the end-all be-all of this bowl season.

If only there were a way to settle all of this on the field..
