Don't let it ever be said Ryan Day can't be tough on his players.
In a clip posted to TikTok from the Shaw Sports Talk Show, hosted by former Ohio State and USC safety Bryson Shaw, former Buckeye linebacker Steele Chambers and Shaw detailed the team meeting after Ohio State lost to Clemson, 23-19, in the College Football Playoff semifinals at the Fiesta Bowl to end its 2019 season. Chambers was a freshman running back at the time, and Shaw was also a freshman.
"The meeting that followed that game, that was one of the hardest meetings I think I'll ever be in as a human being, like, on earth," Chambers said.
@shaw.sports Whats it like losing a CFB playoff game at Ohio state?! #ohiostate #ohiostatefootball #buckeyes #cfb #cfbplayoff original sound - Bryson Shaw
The main thing that stuck out in Chambers and Shaw's memories was the beratement of a single unnamed player. Day and strength and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti laid into him for his actions before the game and his play during.
"We're not gonna throw out names, but a certain player was called out," Chambers said. "And Coach Day, Coach Mick, they spent 30 minutes or so bringing up every single bad play that happened to that one specific guy. And then they told us what he was doing the night before as far as not focusing, doing stuff that you shouldn't be doing."
"They had him standing up in front of us and everything," Shaw interjected. "And this guy is a good player. This guy is an NFL player."
Chambers added that it was unlike anything he's seen before or since, even as he played four more seasons under Day at Ohio State. And it stood out due to the caliber of player, and in Chambers' mind, the caliber of person the unnamed player was.
"Fantastic player, great dude," Chambers said. "And I've never seen a grown man just bawl like that in front of a team while coaches are just showing every negative play that he had that game. I'll never forget that meeting. It was one of the hardest things I've ever watched in my life."
