Saturday marks the 10th all-time meeting between Ohio State and UCLA. For the most part, the previous nine matchups have been highly contested:
- 1961: Ohio State 13, UCLA 3
- 1962: UCLA 9, Ohio State 7
- 1975: Ohio State 41, UCLA 20
- 1976 Rose Bowl: UCLA 23, Ohio State 10
- 1976: Ohio State 10, UCLA 10
- 1979: Ohio State 17, UCLA 13
- 1980: UCLA 17, Ohio State 0
- 1999: Ohio State 42, UCLA 20
- 2001: UCLA 13, Ohio State 6
Nevertheless, when the teams meet on 7:30 p.m., the final score shouldn't be close — especially with UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava set to miss the matchup due to a concussion he suffered in the Bruins' loss to Nebraska.
With or without Iamaleava, though, Ryan Day insists Ohio State's focus can't drift. It's about us, as the head coach reiterates week after week, as the Buckeyes prepare for a UCLA team that will empty the playbook in hopes of pulling off an upset.
“We have to expect the unexpected,” Day said on Thursday. “They had a coordinator change on defense after that (head coaching) change. He kind of came in and wasn't really part of the staff, and then took over and did his whole deal. So it's a little bit different. But I give them all credit. The kids are playing hard. And that's a tribute to the guys that are there, and not only just the culture of the program at UCLA, but how those coaches are doing to keep it all together.”

Bryson Rodgers Makes First Career Touchdown Catch
Redshirt sophomore Bryson Rodgers, playing in place of the injured Carnell Tate, chose a fantastic time to make his first career touchdown catch. On 4th-and-5, he broke off his route after Julian Sayin scrambled, and Sayin threw a dart while jumping to his right to connect with Rodgers for an 11-yard score.

Tate Out and Padilla Out; Smith Starts
Carnell Tate is out against UCLA, but after being questionable on Ohio State's status report, Jeremiah Smith started against the Bruins. Rotational guard Joshua Padilla is out and running back CJ Donaldson is questionable, and didn't see the field on the Buckeyes' first drive.
Smith had his helmet taken on Ohio State's last drive of the first half, appearing as though the Buckeyes will elect to hold him out for the rest of the game with a comfortable lead.
