As you can read about here, 2024 Ohio State quarterback recruiting is the biggest Buckeyes recruiting storyline heading into spring game weekend.

But Ohio State is also still in search of a 2023 signal-caller, and a potential commitment from either Dylan Raiola or Jadyn Davis won’t change that.

One of the biggest targets on OSU’s radar for 2023 is four-star Georgia quarterback Dylan Lonergan, who just took his third visit to Columbus last weekend.

“I really enjoyed being back up there,” Lonergan told Eleven Warriors. “It was nice to see coach Day, coach Dennis and really meet the rest of the coaching staff. C.J. Stroud looked really good all throughout practice and was making throws all over the field. The offense is just great and is built right for a quarterback. It would be a great one to play in.”

Lonergan first received his Ohio State offer after attending an OSU camp in June and throwing in front of Ryan Day and Corey Dennis. He later returned to Columbus in September for a game visit when the Buckeyes played Oregon. Lonergan has always been impressed with Day and Dennis’ ability to develop quarterbacks, which is why he’s still heavily considering OSU.

“That’s one of the most important things for me when I’m looking at a school,” Lonergan said of a school’s development track record.

Lonergan is ranked as the 100th-best prospect and the No. 9 quarterback in the 2023 class, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. Last season for Brookwood High School (Snellville, Georgia), Lonergan completed 234 of 371 passes for 3,392 yards and 32 touchdowns with just three interceptions. He also racked up 645 yards on the ground with seven rushing touchdowns.

As accomplished as Lonergan is as a quarterback, he might even be a better baseball player, and has a chance to be a first- or second-round draft pick in the 2023 MLB draft. If Lonergan even makes it to college – and the only reason he wouldn’t would be if the signing bonus from the MLB draft was to his liking – he plans to be a multi-sport athlete and play baseball as well.

Last weekend’s visit to Columbus was key for Lonergan because it was the first time he got to tour the baseball facilities at Ohio State and speak to the baseball coaching staff.

“I got to see the field, all their hitting and pitching facilities and stuff like that,” Lonergan said. “I really enjoyed seeing that and meeting those coaches, too. It was definitely make or break for me for sure, just being able to see what they’ve got over there. To me, baseball is just as important as football.”

Lonergan has made his desire to play both sports known to Day and Dennis, and says both are on board with that plan.

“They’ve been great,” Lonergan said. “They’ve reminded me over and over again they’re open to letting me do both and seeing where it goes.”

When it comes to Ohio State quarterback recruiting, the elephant in the room with most prospects is what the room will look like when they get there. Assuming C.J. Stroud has another successful season, he’ll likely enter the NFL draft, leaving Kyle McCord or Devin Brown as the likely starting quarterback in 2023. Add that OSU may be getting a commitment from a top-tier 2024 quarterback sooner than later, and 2023 quarterback recruiting can get a bit murky. Lonergan insists he isn’t afraid of competition, though.

“I’m not opposed to anything, you definitely can’t be scared of competition,” Lonergan said. “That’s not a huge factor. But obviously it would be nice to get a chance to play early.”

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound signal caller said he’ll likely make an official visit to Ohio State over the summer.

“Nothing is set for sure but I’m probably going to take one up there,” Lonergan said.

Other schools he’s considering taking an official visit to include Stanford, South Carolina and Alabama.

Lonergan says he will likely make his commitment decision in the summer after he takes all of his official visits.

Collins to visit OSU

Add four-star 2024 Georgia tight end Martavious Collins to the list of Ohio State’s expected visitors for this weekend.

Collins is ranked as the 59th-best prospect in the 2024 class and received his offer from the Buckeyes on March 27. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Collins has racked up 10 Division I offers to this point, also including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Notre Dame and Tennessee. In nine games for Rome High School (Rome, Georgia) last season, Collins caught 21 passes for 268 yards and one touchdown.

A complete list of expected visitors for Saturday’s spring game will be published on Eleven Warriors on Saturday morning.

Big recruiting weekend begins

The spring game is one of one of Ohio State’s biggest recruiting weekends of the year, and it began Friday, when many of the players who will be attending Saturday’s game started arriving on campus.

Here’s a few of the tweets that have already rolled in from Ohio State targets as they begin to enjoy the weekend festivities.
