In what is perhaps the least surprising news of the college basketball season, Ohio State's D'Angelo Russell was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year on Monday evening.

The Buckeyes' superstar guard from Louisville averaged 19.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game during his freshman campaign, guiding Ohio State to a 22-9 record overall and an 11-7 mark in the Big Ten. Russell and the Buckeyes will be the No. 6 seed in next week's Big Ten tournament.

This season, Russell earned seven Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. Purdue's Vince Edwards and Maryland's Melo Trimble earned the second-most of such honors this season with three each. Russell was also named Big Ten Player of the Week twice.

Russell becomes the fourth Big Ten Freshman of the Year under head coach Thad Matta.

Russell was joined on the Big Ten's All-Freshman Team by Jae'Sean Tate, James Blackmon Jr., Melo Trimble and Bryant McIntosh.
