AD Gene Smith’s comments regarding hosting a CFP home game off campus left many of us disappointed. But he did leave the possibility open if it were to occur early enough.
How about this:
8 conference games scheduled, all completed the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving weekend, Friday and Saturday, both sides of the conference play each other based on final rankings, E1 vs W1, E2 vs W2 etc. with games played on campus. This is the same concept used in the 2020 season. Higher ranked teams would host, with the additional home game as a motivator.
This results in:
A 9th game against a Power 5 team as well as a conference champion.
Returns rivalry games to pre-Thanksgiving, when students are on campus and full attention is on The Game all week.
Creates compelling late season matchups.
The conference championship could still take place in Indy if desired, with the “home” team being compensated for lost revenue due to losing a true home game.
Frees the first weekend of December for CFP games to be held on campus.
