Garrett Wilson is an All-American 1st round WR, & far too valuable to be exposed on Special Teams.
Darn shame I just watched Ronnie Bell limp off the field after returning a punt for TTUN. Didn’t look good for the Wolverines top receiver.
Last year Alabama lost Jalyn Waddle for the season on a return.
Putting your best players in this violent role is beyond reckless, it’s just plain stupid! Garrett Wilson got teed off on Thursday Nite by a Minnesota gunner... and he never even touched the ball! Thankfully the torpedo hit him in the chest because his knees would’ve been blown out if the he gunner shot 12 inches lower. I hold my breath every single punt.
Special Teams are the most dangerous plays in football for a number of reasons. You’ve got young guys flying kamikaze trying to make a name for themselves by blowing somebody up.
Also, we have other players we want to get involved in these games! I’d have Cam Martinez spend practice shagging balls from Mirco & Ruggles, and make him our designated returner. Here you go Cam, there’s 7-8 touches a game!
Consider this a pleading request for Ryan Day to take the top WR’s in CFB (Olave & Wilson) off special teams effective immediately. We need our NFL WR’s as elite weapons in the passing game. We don’t need them on special teams. Find a couple youngsters, who are thirsty for reps, to play out there with the crash test dummies!
Be smart coach: Weigh the risk/reward analysis & ask yourself is there anyone else who can field a punt?
