Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett and running back Mike Weber were named to the preseason watch list for the 81st annual Maxwell Award today.
Barrett is the only three-time captain in Ohio State history and holds 23 school records heading into his final campaign. He is six touchdowns shy of Drew Brees' Big Ten record of 106 touchdowns responsible for and is 1,167 passing yards way from the No. 1 spot in Ohio State's books.
Weber was named a freshman All-American last season, becoming just the third Ohio State freshman to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season (1,096), while scoring nine touchdowns and averaging six yards per carry.
Buckeyes to have previously won the Maxwell Award include: Howard “Hopalong” Cassady (1955), Bob Ferguson (1961), Archie Griffin (1975) and Eddie George (1995).
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced on October 30, 2017, while the three finalists will be unveiled November 20, 2017. The award winner will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 7, 2017.
