North Carolina Announces Home-And-Home Series Scheduled for 2017-2018 Is Cancelled

Well, this is a bummer. UNC would've been a fun place to visit.

As of now, this leaves Oklahoma coming to Columbus in 2017 and a trip to Fort Worth to play TCU in 2018 as the premiere out-of-conference games.

(North Carolina replaced Ohio State with Cal-Berkely.)

Meh.  It would have been nice but they are not a great team.  Hopefully there is enough time to replace them.

Their reason doesn't make sense at all though; the 9-game B1G schedule is already set for those seasons and UNC is easily slotted into OSU's schedule.

That's what I was thinking. Hopefully this opens up some wiggle room to schedule a more premier opponent. UNC would've been nice, but there are far better possibilities out there.

This doesn't read as gloomy, to me. I think it intimates the next wave of expansion/realignment.

This "Power-5" model will be scrapped for the winning design, the Power-4. The Big XII will be subsumed by the SEC, PAC and B1G, most likely.

My buddy lives in Chapel Hill. We had planned on going. I hate when they do this. Didn't we have a home and home with Tenn and that got cancelled.

+3 HS

Yes, the one with UT was scrapped - I think for the same "9 game conference schedule" reasoning.

What about the 2020 home-and-home with Oregon?  That get canned too?

+3 HS
Jbuckham94's picture

The UT and UGA home and homes were scrapped because of a non-conference series agreement between the B1G and at the time, PAC-10. I believe that got canceled once the PAC-10 expanded to 12 teams and they decided to do a 9 game conference schedule.

I hope that OSU doesn't cancel the other high profile games too. Cancelling UGA and Tenn makes it look like they're ducking big teams, and hope that doesn't happen to Oregon, Oklahoma, and Texas. I am not saying that this is my opinion, nor that it is fact, simply that it will most likely become perception.

Woody16111's picture

Just taking a stab at this one ...

Could be more of an Ohio State issue - as it stands there are 5 home games in 2017 w/ one opening slot remaining, meaning the OSU home slate would only have 6 home games. In the past Gene Smith has made comments that OSU builds it's AD budget around 7 OSU home games.

Keep in mind the Big 10 is moving to 9 Conf games, which also means in some years there will only be 4 home conf games. W/ three non conf games left, in those years OSU would need them all to be home games to get to the magic number.

As for 2018, there are 6 home games on the slate w/ one open slot remaining. One possibility here is that OSU needs to find a team that won't demand a home/home, meaning a MAC school or some other school that just wants a paycheck, hopefully D-1a,or whatever it is called these days.

Another possibility is a neutral site game, maybe in the Jerry Dome where Ohio State can live with only six home games in 17' because the gate in Dallas will still meet OSU's budget. We could be on the verge of a two game, two year OSU neutral site game Vs. one team or two, that is part of some larger package deal being worked on, like a 2 Big Ten Teams Vs. 2 SEC each year (four game two year series.) ???

Time will tell.

+6 HS
JohnnyKozmo's picture

Can't be a D1A Playoff Subdivision team, what ever it's called.  B1G can no longer schedule those teams in the future, or was that just strongly suggested that they get away from them.

CGroverL's picture

+1....Thanks for the future outlook. I looked for the schedules that you wrote about and couldn't find them. The worst part of it all is your last sentence...."Time will tell" is hitting the nail right on the head. By this time next season we will really have no idea how 2016 on will lay out. Personally the jump to 16 teams by the SEC brought along a change in football that will totally change the Big Ten. If everything goes as planned, the Big Ten will soon have 16 teams as well. Along with that, the Bucks will have 9 conference games, while missing games against 6 conference opponents.

I know that the bulk of the fans love the playoffs and now this change to super conferences of 16 teams...., but I seriously wish that we had 10 Big Ten teams and at least 8 conference games as before. "Time will tell", as you said but I think these changes are all coming way too fast and in the end, Ohio State's constantly changing schedule will keep the rest of the country talking about Ohio State's weak schedule when the Big Ten being a conference power is close to back and may be back this season. Oh well...    as you said, "time will tell". I just hope we haven't bitten off more than me can chew. I think all of this is happening way too fast and it isn't in the best interest of finding a true #1 (which was what the BCS and its predecessors were supposed to accomplish), and will end up killing the meaning of bowl season. I loved bowl season and all of this is ripping it apart quickly. "Time will tell".

There are 2 open slots on the 2017 Schedule.  I would imagine they will both be home games or one of them "neutral" but close.

"I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully."

Woody16111's picture

Before UNC dropped of the 2017 schedule there were already 11 games, meaning 1 open slot w/ only 5 home games, 4 home conference games and 1 home non conf game (Oklahoma). The open slot in 2017 had to be a home game to get to 6.

Now that UNC is off the schedule, there are two open slots for 2017 - UNC was a road game that year so there is still 5 home games.

My point was that I think OSU needed two home games in 2017 and UNC didn't want a one and done, just guessing. OR, OSU is in the mix for some kind of major "Neutral" site game - solo or part of a larger deal w/ other teams/conferences like OSU basketball recently announced.

OSU would go for a neutral site game w/ 6 home games if and only if the gate/broadcasting would outpace a typical home game.

If it isn't a neurtral site game, and OSU had to drop UNC out of money issues, meaning the need for more home games that year, then any team that gets added won't result in a marque home/home since OSU needs both in 2017 to be home and the remaining game for 2018 to be a home game.

Basically, every other year Ohio State won't play a road non conference game, unless it's a marquee neutral site game. This is caused by the 9 game BIG schedule.

2015 schedule is far from embarassing, in my eyes. We open the season again on the road (we're on the road this year @Navy) @Va Tech, followed by 3 snoozers. But then it heats up in B1G play, hosting Md, then Penn State, with a finishing stretch of Minny, @Ill, MSU and then @Meatchicken. If we get to the B1G title game, we will have earned it.

And 2016 is redonkulous! 3rd game is @OK, later we have @Wisky, @PSU back to back, host NerdWestern and Neb, @MD and @MSU back to back, then finish with AACC. That'll likely be a top 20 SoS season.

Notre Dame did not want to join the B1G, so IMO, no B1G team should ever play ND in any sport, period. The contract they have with the ACC is a bunch of crap = they want the prestige in basketball ( full conference games ), but will not give it up in football. Piss on the Irish.

Playing the Tat Heels would have been nice to get exposure in that area for recruiting. As several have said, the game would fit even after the nine game B1G schedule.  I would like to hear the truth from gene smith for once. You know he is not telling the whole truth whenever his lips are moving. He couldn't find his arss even if he used both hands.

Unless you want to go through a few minutes of "word vomit", DO NOT read this comment. I was told that I write "word vomit" yesterday. I apologize for my novel-like comments, but I write the truth and the truth has stats and records involved and sometimes it takes words to explain my opinions. Again, I apologize. Piss on the Irish? Well, good on you, mate. It's good to have a team to hate on and they are, in my opinion, the most hated team in college football, behind Ohio State, that is.

"If you wanna be the best, you have to beat the best"....very interesting point of view and I've heard that many times, but I have to admit that I've heard it the most by steroided up dudes holding a mic and screaming at the top of their lungs in the middle of a wrestling ring. Don't think I don't see your point...I do. However, with there now being 16 teams in the SEC like there will soon be in all major conferences, I don't see the top 8 SEC teams as the best in the nation. I think you have to go to the top 4 to get any respect out of a game that you want to schedule "by conference". And who really knows who the top 4 teams in the SEC will be a few years from now, anyway? My point is that scheduling a top SEC team for a game 3 years from now may be a tough task. Florida State took on an SEC team last season and won the title. They played a (4-8) Florida team, though. If Ohio State had scheduled Florida last season and then that Florida team ended up laying their (4-8) egg, the fans would be saying that we scheduled an SEC team that we knew would be weak.

See, in 2012, Northwestern had Vanderbilt scheduled as their 2nd opponent, Northwestern won and then beat Mississippi State in their bowl game. See, they were (2-0) against the SEC. Both of their SEC opponents finished the regular season ranked (although MSU fell out of the final rankings after their bowl loss to Northwestern) and they beat 2 SEC teams that had 17 wins and were (9-7) overall in the SEC. But if Ohio State scheduled LSU and South Carolina and those 2 teams ended up with 17 wins and a (9-7) SEC record, the SEC fans would be screaming that Ohio State didn't play against the top tier SEC teams. Northwestern's resume in 2012 included starting off the season (5-0) and finishing with a (10-3) record with wins over 2 "better than middle of the pack" SEC squads. One of their losses was in OT and one of their losses was by one point. They never entered the top 20 (AP) until the final rankings were released when they finished the season at #17. There is a conspiracy against the Big Ten as a whole if you haven't noticed. In this same 2012 season, the AP announced that Ohio State would be in the AP Poll and eligible for the AP's National Title. We all knew that was only possible if Ohio State was the only FBS team that went unbeaten. Guess what? The Bucks were the only team left unbeaten and finished at #3. This conspiracy is pro-SEC as well. The AP had 5 SEC teams in their top 9 which means if Ohio State was not in their poll (obviously they were but weren't taken seriously at all) their final poll would have had 5 of their top 8 teams from the SEC. That is only possible with a conspiracy.

I agree with you about scheduling tough teams, but I don't think you can just say "beat the SEC" because you have to beat the SEC's best and no one knows who that is going to be. I'm sure that Florida didn't expect a 2013 record of (4-8)...besides...Ohio State had both Georgia and Vanderbilt scheduled and we all saw those games go out the window. In my opinion, you almost have to HOPE for a tough schedule, if that is what you are after. You can do everything possible to make your games tough, but that doesn't mean that the other teams will cooperate. Imagine if Cal would have been the best PAC-? team over the last couple of seasons. They've had great seasons before. Soon you will have 10 conference games (if the Bucks are as good as we all think) and 3 games where I think you kinda have to hope that your opposition in out of conference games are good. Scheduling a tough schedule isn't something you just do. You have to get lucky and now you have to get even luckier with fewer out of conference games coming soon. Remember Ohio State vs. Vandy and Georgia? Scheduling the SEC has been tried already. You still get +1 from me as all that down ND do. Great avatar and signature, Go Buckeyes!

I agree with you about scheduling tough teams, but I don't think you can just say "beat the SEC" because you have to beat the SEC's best and no one knows who that is going to be. I'm sure that Florida didn't expect a 2013 record of (4-8)...

That's the problem with scheduling out-of-conference games.  They generally agree to these games many years in advance.  Sure, you might schedule a program at a time when that program is good, but then in the years that follow, up to the year when you finally play them, their program might have gone backwards.  Cal is a perfect example of that.  They were actually a pretty good team in the early to middle portions of the 2000s, which I imagine is around the time when OSU and Cal agreed to a home-and-home from 2012-13.  I remember when some guy named Aaron Rodgers (not sure if you've ever heard of him) was their QB.  However, last year, they were f'n terrible.  OOC scheduling isn't as simple as "schedule this guy or that guy or that guy" because you never know if "that guy" will be as good when you go to play them as they were when you first agreed to play them in the future.  Not to mention changing circumstances that can require certain games to be cancelled.  You mentioning having to get lucky is spot on...it's kind of the word I've been looking for for quite a while to describe my frustrations with people who just bash OSU's scheduling to no end.

Prepare yourself for disappointment. I see the home and home being replaced with two paycheck games to give OSU seven home games. Each home game = $7M. How do you think OSU will pay for the additional $1.65M budgeted for cost of attendance? Or the increase in out of state tuition? Or the feed them all the time plan? Or stadium expansion/lights? Please don't say raise ticket prices because they are already most expensive in the nation. I'm hoping for P5 teams willing to take a check and not MAC.

More importantly, I was really liking the idea of having a marquee home-home opponent and a middle tier Power 5 conference home-home opponent each year.  I also liked the idea of having one non-conference game on the road nearly every year.  Hopefully, this is not about Gene Smith disliking the opportunity cost of not playing an extra home game each year.

If your going to be the best you have to play the best. Bama or bust.

Wouldn't that be Florida State? And who is to say who will be the best in three years?

Alabama has been as close to a dynasty as any other team in the nation. FSU won their first in 10+ years, it's not like they've been dominating college football or even their conference lol. I would feel better about a win over Saban than I would the defending champs just my opinion.

Go to 13 games and rid yourself of the 9 game conference schedule issue. This will allow OSU and other schools have the 7 or 8 home games and 9 conference games.

Ohio State vs Notre Dame at Wrigley Field, $$$

Let's party, Columbus.

The athletic department is listening. They cancelled the Home and Home series with UNC because of the travel costs it would place on the fans. Instead, they are replacing UNC on the schedule with home games against UNC Charlotte and UNC Asheville. This way, OSU fans can enjoy watching their team at home while still being able to play against a team from Carolina. It will be the best of both worlds and with 2 other Carolina teams coming to Columbus, it will almost be as if UNC was there. (Another consolation, UNC Charlotte will probably be better in football than UNC by that point with the way UNC's program is going)

tOSU just isn't having any luck with these future games: UGA, Tenn and now UNC. I would have liked to see all of these.

And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!

It's not like UNC is some big college football power.  But they are still better than a mid-to-low-major.  So it sucks.  I would've liked to see a couple of ass kickings of a school that cheats 100x worse than OSU did yet gets nothing from the NCAA.

Class of 2010.

If UNC gets hammered for academic fraud, this could be a blessing. Wins over a weakened UNC wouldn't gain much favor in the eyes of the playoff committee. Of course replacing them with a MAC school or Sun Belt opponent won't do anything in this regard either.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

I'm not a big fan of playing neutral site games.I am a little jealous that schools like Michigan and Wisconsin have scheduled high profile games, but in the heart of the south at Jerryworld is what grinds my gears. Home and homes I think are probably a much more memorable experience for both fanbases and the players

I like football
