Buckeye Student Runs 4.45 in Preliminary Races

By John Brandon on March 26, 2014 at 8:28p

Last week, Urban Meyer challenged the students of Ohio State to a race against the fastest Buckeye football player. When asked if Meyer thought there was a student faster than Dontre Wilson, and if so - would he take them on the team? Meyer at least semi-seriously answered "yes and yes."

Meyer certainly got the students' attention. Today, students flocked to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center in an attempt to prove they belonged on the track with Dontre and others. No names were released, but one student ran a 4.45, which should make Dontre and Devin Smith sweat a bit.

The top six finishers will be competing head to head at student appreciation day on April 5th for the right to race the fastest Buckeye at halftime of the spring game.

Here's some footage of one of the top finishers, Colwyn Headley (courtesy of Andrew Holleran of BuckeyeGrove.com):

When I was a senior I ran 5.1 as a receiver. I wish I was fast. I had the size just no speed. 6'4" 225

This story is a bit long...I'll keep it as short as I can. I played baseball in high school. As a junior, I ran a hand timed 4.38 second 40 (normally, we run the 30 and 60 in baseball). My coach decided he was "too quick on the watch" and had me run it again. My next time was a 4.44. Well, because of my speed, my baseball coach and football coach were constantly trying to talk to me after that...they said that my speed alone would get me a football scholarship. I bought into it and started at CB in our first game of my senior year. I was 5'11" and 177 lbs.

In our 4th game we lost 49-0 against Apopka High School and I kept getting into fist fights while playing CB and WR. What I didn't know was that I was fighting Warren Sapp. I'm not afraid to tell the truth. I got my ass kicked. What hurt the most was my wrist after throwing punches at helmets. I broke my wrist during that game and was in a cast for 18 MONTHS. Needless to say, no scholarships came my way after missing the entire baseball season and 6 of our 10 football games.

There is a moral to this story....if you are going to fight while playing football, make sure your opponent has his helmet OFF as punching helmets really hurts badly. Speed kills, but it does no good without good hands to go with it.... My injury required a bone graft where a micro surgeon chiseled a piece of bone out of my hip and then inserted it in my wrist with 3 pins holding it together. I have hated Warren Sapp ever since because I am now a plumber (and since I live in Florida) and stick my hands in toilets of SEC fans for money. Oh well....Go Buckeyes!

"I hope they're last in everything". One of Meyer's comments when speaking of TTUN after being hired at Ohio State.

I think the real moral of the story is not to get into a fist fight with Warren Sapp

Damn dude.

At least you have good job security down there.  No shortage of bullshit coming from those people, that's for sure.

I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.

Reminds me of when Texas Tech had kicking troubles and held a contest at halftime for the students. Guy kicks a 35yd FG or so and receives awalk-on offer lol.

And didn't he score the extra point that put them up on Texas in that ridiculous Crabtree catch game?

4.8 in college, defensive end, D3. I am quite alright with that. If I ran a 4.45, good lord, i don't even know

Great PR move by Urbz to get the student body talking about spring practice and checking out the hidden talent in the backyard.

I takes me a commercial break to go get a beer. I've never been FAT timed though, just hand timed.

It's important to have your kind of speed in that scenario.  You gotta get back to the coach before regular programming resumes.  Although, DVR has really changed the dynamics of our "sport."

Back in the day, I could go to the bathroom AND grab a beer before the commercial was over.

Lol, so the guy in the video isn't a football player?  Looks like a pretty good athlete.

Headley is the captain of the men's club track team.

Colwyn has been a podium finisher in track and field competitions Internationally as a youth in Guyana and Barbados. Upon relocation to the U.S., he ran varsity track and cross country as a member of Wooster High School. He completed the Columbus Marathon 2011 and plans to race in the Columbus Half in 2013. As a member of the running club, he competes in most events, but specializes in relays (4x4, 4x8, medleys) and field events (high jump, long jump).

Devin and Dontre might have their hands full here.  Better pick up a fresh pair of PF Flyers before the race.  They are Guaranteed after all.

And people laughed when I said you could find a number of non athletic team students who could run a great time.

Hopefully, they find another Nate Ebner.

I think they should have a powerlifting event for students at someplace like Westside Barbell or in the OSU weight room.  If any of those guys put up some impressive numbers, give them a look.

Maybe an Olympic-Style lift competition.  Olympic-Style lifters are some of the most explosive athletes in the world.
