WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Hailing from Arvada, Colorado, some 1,300 miles away from Columbus, Jake Moretti doesn’t get to visit Ohio State’s campus too often. But when it was announced The Opening would be holding a regional camp just north of Ohio Stadium, the 2017 Buckeyes commit knew it would be an easy chance to compete against some of the top talent in the country while also checking out his future home.

To kill two words with one stone, if you will.

“I figured if I was going to come to one of these, I might as well come to where I’m committed,” Moretti said with a smile.

After a strong performance Saturday, Moretti, somewhat surprisingly, did not earn an invitation to The Opening. He likely will later down the road, however.

What he did do, though, was, by all accounts, dominate all day while playing a position he’s not accustomed to playing. Rated by 247Sports’ composite rankings as the nation’s No. 61 overall player and 12th-ranked offensive tackle, Moretti repped at center during last weekend’s camp.

Listed at 6-foot-5 and 285 pounds, Moretti looks the part of a tackle, but the four-star prospect said he doesn’t really care where he plays and that he’s comfortable in any position.

“I can play wherever,” he said. “Whatever Ohio State wants me to play, I’ll go out there and play it.”

That kind of versatility is something new Buckeyes’ offensive line coach Greg Studrawa will surely love. Moretti said he has been working to strengthen his relationship with Studrawa since he was hired by Ohio State.

“He’s a great dude,” Moretti said of Studrawa. “I can’t wait to get to work with him.”

Moretti and five-star offensive tackle Josh Myers give the Buckeyes quite the start to the 2017 class up front. With such tight scholarship numbers it’s unclear how many more offensive linemen, if any, Ohio State will add in 2017, so if Moretti and Myers are the only two they are certainly a solid duo.

A man of few words, Moretti prefers to let his on-field performance speak for itself. He did mention he tries to do a little bit of recruiting when he comes to events like The Opening, but for the most part he likes to fly under the radar.

Moretti said he doesn’t have a ton of plans for this summer other than working to improve on all aspects of his game in an attempt to get his Pomona team back to the state playoffs.

After that, he’s ready for Ohio State.

“I’m just trying to improve overall as a player and build relationships with the coaches so that when I get up there we can hit the ground rolling,” Moretti said. “When you go to that next level, they’re pretty much better than you at everything. They’ve had that coaching so I’m just trying to improve overall.”
