Torrance Gibson Will Not Make Official Visit to Ohio State This Week

In the constantly changing world of college football recruiting, it's wise to not count a visit as "official" until a prospect is on campus.

Torrance Gibson, who had scheduled his official visit to Ohio State over a month ago, will not be at the Buckeyes' home slate against Virginia Tech this weekend because of a scheduling conflict: he's got a high school game that night.

Gibson's plans have not changed otherwise, he plans to make a commitment on October 20th, but his visit to Ohio State is now not likely to happen before that date. Expect the late November showdown against Michigan to be the next time Gibson is at Ohio State, according to the 6-foot-4, 200 pound quarterback.

And we expect him to remember all the plays in our playbook,  when he cannot remember when he is going to play a game that has been scheduled for months ?

Calm your tits,  he's still a kid. he prolly just got excited in the summer like HELL YAH I WANNA GO TO A NIGHT GAME!

This might tho, impact our shot with Sweat. i was hoping with Gibson and Harris there together. it would help sway Sweat into becoming a Buckeye.

Unless he's a Miami Heat fan...then we probably shouldn't do that.

Come on tho, as Buckeye fans we know this!

I saw a tweet that his game was originally scheduled for Friday but it got pushed back.

The AD of that high school must be a Michigan or Tennessee alum...don't want Gibson to be a Buckeye, so they push back  the game "coincidentally" to Saturday...

Actually no, that's just the nature of Florida HS football. Games get moved around all the time.

Florida's a bit different than Ohio as far as scheduling goes, games are being scheduled and added and moved around all the time. Heck, Jamel Dean's Cocoa team has had two games cancelled in their first two weeks.

...he's got a high school game that night.

Dammit, if only his HS schedule had been available sooner, these types of scheduling snafus could be avoided.

On the other hand, watching The Game from the sideline is a privilege that most of us would kill for.

EDIT: I will retract my sarcastic comment due to the educational opportunity afforded by Birm's information regarding the scheduling system for FLA HS FB.

Isn't this like, a great sign for his commitment to the good guys? I mean, if he's committing to a school on 10/20, and taking an official here late November, that kinda sounds like he's made up his mind and is choosing Ohio State. Maybe I'm just relentlessly optimistic...

+3 HS

I was thinking the same thing, and I know he hadn't set any other visits up originally, but isn't he visiting Oklahoma?  I thought I saw that on a thread a week or 2 ago.

If you're a high school kid who this school really wants, and you have been high on them all along, and you're on the sidelines for the Ohio State M*ch*gan game (likely along with some pro players/other elite high school talent and you not only notice the weather, but give a shit about it there's something wrong with you.

+3 HS
Mortc15's picture

Gibson's eventual goal is the NFL and he's on record as saying the weather wont bother him because NFL teams regularly play in the conditions. That will not affect him in the slighest, from what he's already said about the issue.

I doubt it. Harris said that Kentucky is recruiting him the hardest. He is getting the full court press from everyone down there and it appears to be working. He has scheduled his announcement date Dec 13th which is the same day Kentucky has it's biggest game with N. Carolina. It could be a coincident.

Did you forget to use italics?

We need him to pull in others. Kirk, Harris and Sweat.
It all starts with TG in my opinion, if it didn't already start with Hilliard. Does anybody realize how ridiculous it would be to get all of the remaining 4?

No. The kid changes his mind so often (and that's okay!) I feel like we have a better shot with a later visit. I understand your point, but I dont see it to be as big of a factor as you do.

This link dated 11 August shows that they have a game scheduled September 6.

Seems like quite an oversight...

Here's even a link from April showing a game scheduled for that date...

http://floridahsfootball.com/2014/04/23/american-heritage-patriots-plant...

This happens every year with lots of visits. Kids see an exciting game so they say they will visit a college on that date but then notice a conflict later. Given he plays almost all of his games on Fridays, it is understandable (to a degree) that he may have thought he would have had that date open but failed to bother to check. Obviously this has no reflection on his interest level in OSU but rather that he simply forgot to check his game schedule to see that was his only Saturday game.

+2 HS

Valid point. I don't fault the kid... We don't know all the details.  Mistakes happen.

Agreed, I'm just playing devil's advocate here but shouldn't the OSU athletic department be held just as responsible for the oversight? I don't know exactly how the offical visits are set up, but I imagine they offered the invitation to the kid and he said yes.

Just... Go Bucks.

awlinBrutus's picture

Zach Smith is the lead recruiter on Gibson I believe, as Urban is always 1b with every recruit.Maybe JT's success has him rethinking his direction? Or its just a coincidence that JT's success just made the depth chart that much deeper?

MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS

+1 HS
UrbanPirate's picture

I'll give ya the UV for being on top of the recruiter info and putting some thought into it, but has there been any indication whatsoever that they're backing off Gibson at all?? There was a schedule conflict, I don't think OSU saw how JT played and then pushed Gibson's game this week from Friday to Saturday so he couldn't see the VaTech game.. But all of this is really just fodder, as I doubt one vanilla (albeit effective) game against a bunch of service academy (albeit hard nosed) cadets is enough of a sample size for anyone to draw any conclusions about a freshman QB's future successes.

Just... Go Bucks.

FairfaxBuckeye's picture

The game was previously scheduled for 1:00PM, and changed to 6:00PM recently. My guess is that he was hoping to catch a flight up to Columbus, after the end of his game, to make the visit this week.

Not worried about it, even if he goes elsewhere.  We have JT and Braxton in 2015; JT and Joey Burrow in 2016; both back in 2017 and Danny Clark comes in.  I would much rather see Josh Sweat become a Buckeye than anyone visiting Saturday.  By far the biggest potential in him.

I loved the idea of having him in town to help OSU put the "press" on Harris and Burrell, but it was not meant to be. I still think Buckeyes land at least one of the visitors this weekend, in addition to Gibson.

Either way, I am stoked for this game, but will be out celebrating my wife's birthday...and checking my text alerts.

Gibson has had us as his leader longer than any other team. He wants to be a Buckeye. He is just doing his due diligence. First he had a great night game schedule and now he chooses The Game. That's a move of someone that has a good idea where is going to attend. If I were a recruit, I'd think "That VT game is gonna be sick!!! I wanna announce on ____(sentimental reason date)____ and that game is right before it. I can't wait! Oh, damn! I have a freaking Sat night game on that date?? Whatever, I love me some Buckeyes. I'll go to The Game. Might be even more fun."

Is anyone doubting Urban isn't closing the deal with Gibson?  I'm always skeptical with recruiting but for some reason, I just feel that Gibson wants to learn under Miller for a year and as sick as this is to say and please forgive me... Miller getting injured might have helped us land Gibson.

I'm not to concerned with T.G wavering, between the comments he's made and the obvious interest displayed by sporting the OSU cleats against Dwyer I believe he's pretty set in his decision. Not that the Internet rumors are usually true but I thought I had read he informed Urban and co. of his plan to commit but....ya never know I guess. The biggest draw back isn't about Torrence, it's that him Harris and Hilliard together is juggernaut of a recruiting tool.
