Miami Three-Star Defensive Back Carlton Davis Commits to Ohio State

Carlton Davis becomes the 15th member of Ohio State's 2015 recruiting class.

The Buckeyes 2015 recruiting class grew by one tonight as Miami, Florida defensive back Carlton Davis surprised many by committing to Ohio State tonight on a local Florida radio show.

The Davis File

  • Class 2015
  • Position DB
  • Size 6-1/182
  • School Norland (Miami, Fl)
  • Composite ★★★
  • Rank 58 (CB)

A three-star defensive back and the nation's 58th-ranked cornerback, Davis chose the Buckeyes tonight over offers from Alabama, South Carolina, Miami, Arkansas, Florida, Clemson and others. He's 6-foot-1 and 185-pounds, and provides another tall, rangy defensive back option for Kerry Coombs and the Buckeyes.

Davis becomes the 15th member of the Ohio State recruiting class and second cornerback from the Miami area, joining Jamel Dean, who committed to the Buckeyes in December.

While Davis has committed to Ohio State, it appears that his recruitment is really just taking off. He visited the Buckeyes for Friday Night Lights in July and it put the Buckeyes in the driver's seat.

For now.

He had narrowed his list to Ohio State, Clemson and Miami recently, but it appears that things are just starting to heat up for the defensive back.

Chris Ash handled Davis' recruiting for the Buckeyes, and it was Ash who he verbally committed to.

"He's probably a 4.5 guy," one source familiar with Davis' game told Eleven Warriors. "He's really long at 6-foot-2, and has great cover skills. He's tough. He should be a four-star in my mind. He's really good."

Ugh... I can't stand the Bucknuts members... just scum. Go read the comments on the message board if you dare. Just pitiful; ripping apart a kid who is trying to enjoy what should be a great moment in his life.

With that said, his offer list is outstanding, possibly the best offer list out of any recruit in our class so far.

I don't read Bucknuts but while committing he said his recruitment is still open. What exactly does that mean? We're in his top 3?

This is more like a reservation than a commitment. Looks even softer than Ben Edwards' commitment. There's a good reason why people are tempering their enthusiasm right now.

1. The majority aren't ripping him apart. Sure some trolls are but that's to be expected. Most are just surprised (as they should be) since this kid wasn't on anyone's radar.

2. I find it funny how Bucknuts is continually bashed on here yet probably a quarter or more of the information that is talked about in the forums here originated from Bucknuts or 247sports. Interesting.

Let's try to be nice now. It's funny though. Everyone hates me so much that they just downvote me and my researched statistics without an explanation....I try to be funny while still being accurate and never do I get into places where I tell people "what to do" or "how to think" but everyone hates me, anyway. I've never been on Bucknuts or 24/7...Hell, I don't even know what they are. I was told by a member of Buckeye Nation to come here to 11W (from that awful Turner owned "Bleacher Report" and their pro-SEC writing) and I have gone nowhere else since. I don't know if I will log off and take a walk, but I now feel like I have to see what the bashing is all about. Thanks to all for your general disgust and disagreeing with each other. I wonder how many downvotes I'll get for this? Oh....and just so you know, Sarasotabcg, you had a downvote when I showed up (I wasn't the person that gave you the downvote). I've given out 5 or less downvotes in my history here. I really keep to myself, usually...I just like for Buckeye Nation to stay strong especially when the Navy game is so close.....Strength in numbers, ya know? And Ohio State football has more fans than ANY other college football team. Let's get it together....fans, students, and alumni...all together. That is what makes Buckeye Nation what it is and that is why there is no such thing as Seminole Nation even though they are the defending champs.

Go Buckeyes!!!

Thanks, Urb!

If you cut down on the novels and run on sentences/thoughts, I'll bet you won't get so many downvotes.  Don't worry, I'm not downvoting you.  I'm just offering some advice.  This may be your writing style, and this is an informal site, but it feels like your posts are word vomit.  I'm not trying to be cruel, but that's what's put me off about your posts.  Keeping things short and concise gets you far on this site.

+2 HS
CGroverL's picture

This I already know and I truly thank you for the advice. Being that you get a HS for just throwing 5 words in a comment helps, too. Unfortunately, This is not a fun site for me where I have friends and we rap back and forth. For instance, it is 1:19 a.m. right now and I just decided for once to see what is up everyone's ass and why everyone is so pissy with each other. I'm in it to say my words to defend Buckeye Nation and players most of the time and when you have players comparisons, it takes stats, speeds, sizes, and many other intangibles to prove your point on certain subjects.

Anyone can write "Elliott  should be the starting RB" and leave it at that...and he/she may get 10 others that agree with them and pick up a quick +11. That is what I consider "word vomit". I'd much rather read someone's comment that gives reasons why Elliott deserves the starting spot. The truth of it is that I LIKE TO WRITE and you can cram your word vomit comment up your ass as often and at any time you want. It's much different when you have a group of 3-8 people talking back and forth and you throw your thoughts back and forth. It is more of an atmosphere of a sports bar where people are saying things back and forth and asking questions, etc.

What I normally do is write one longer comment like my first one trying to get the Nation to rally together and then have one or two comments on other people's comments. I'd like to know what it feels like to tell a fellow Buckeye fan that is trying to get Buckeye Nation together when people are arguing over whether or not another guy is generalizing (see, to me the whole, "you are generalizing". "No he wasn't, you're the one that is generalizing" is what I would call word vomit and non-constructive word vomit, at that) that he is writing "word vomit".

All of my comments are way too long, and I normally apologize and call my comments novels as you did. However, normally my novels are filled with "on topic" opinions which I then back with maybe too many stats and other reasons to show my opinion as valid. Sometimes that takes a few more words. Do yourself a favor and simply SKIP MY COMMENT. If you read it though, you can be assured that all stats of any kind have been researched and are true...That takes time and words. I truly apologize that you'd rather read comments about which person is generalizing the most in their 3 combined comments and think of my normal comments as word vomit. Good luck to ya. Go Buckeyes!

"I hope they're last in everything"

Thanks, Urb!

You're trusting a recruiting service over the judgement of Urbz, Nick Saban & a bunch of other college coaches at big programs? Brass balls man.

That's not a knock on the recruiting services either. Generally, they do a good job. However, there are thousands of kids playing HS ball. They are continually growing, getting faster, and improving. Sometimes the services miss a kid that didn't have outstanding numbers his junior year. The offer list can tell you a lot.

This class is small. If a commitment is accepted, the player is not a reach.

As Birm says, look at the offer list not the rankings. OSU, Bama, LSU, Georgia, Clemson, Florida, The U, So Carolina, ND. That's much better than what his 3 star ranking suggests.

crusher's picture

I really don't trust a kids "offer" sheet either. Who knows how many of those were actually committable. I see other kids commit to other schools all the time that claim they had an offer from OSU and it's well known their offer was non committable. On another note, high schools need to do a better job of teaching the definition of the word commit.

A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

+2 HS

What is the point of a "non-committable offer"?

GLiening

+1 HS
crusher's picture

As far as I can tell OSU using them for out of state talent to try open pipelines and to keep their options open. I really haven't seen Urban make any in state non committable offers. It is more likely that an Ohio kid that OSU has as a third option would jump on an offer and put the staff in a bad position to tell the kid they can't accept. It would burn bridges with high school coaches all over the state.

A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Liening's picture

So how does one extend a non-committable offer?  "We are offering you, but we don't want you to accept." ?  That seems a little insulting, no matter which state you are from.

Even if his commitment isn't as solid as most recruits, it's still nice to to have another kid talk good and announce it like he did on a local Florida radio station. That's kind of like bonus advertising for the Buckeyes. Plus its a good sign that he wants to be good friends with Bosa.

I'm strangely OK with what most are considering a tentative commitment. For one, he obviously loved his visit and bonded with Ash. Two, I can't imagine that any of our coaches are going to go about this in a naive manner. They heard his statements and know where he stands. I'm guessing they'll continue to recruit other DBs.

Finally, this shit happens all the time in the SEC and they don't cry about it. If you're going to recruit Southern kids who like to commit, but "keep their recruitment open" then you have the play the game a bit. Either that, or take Hoke's route of not allowing visits. Two strategies, each with their pros and cons.

I hear you. People should be just as hard on the programs that give out offers, but then go on to say they are "non-committable," by that logic. With Meyer and other coaches saying that a "commitment" really just means "top 3," I would imagine that this kind of thing is not as big a deal to coaches as it is to fans. A "conditional acceptance" or something similar, would probably be a better term for recruits at this stage in the process.

+2 HS
moopdawg's picture

Tall and lanky 3☆ safety? Sounds like Tyvis Powell, who only started for us as a fresman last year. Offers> Rankings.

In Urban we trust. That is all

Watch his highlights, dude is used to pressing at the line and likes to hit, and he's 6'1- 6'2...welcome aboard Carlton

if he isn't here in Feb so be it, stop projecting your negativity....osu inks off the radar corner with an offer sheet of elite teams...and season is two weeks away, stop bitching.

Ball out Carlton, ball out

Committed?

You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means...

Urban says when a kid says he's committed to your school it really means you're in his top 3.
