Friday Night Lights: CJ Conrad Will Visit, Camp

Could Ohio State be making a move to get back in the game for the Buckeye state's top 2015 tight end, C.J. Conrad? It appears so now that the 6-foot-5, 225-pounder will visit Columbus tomorrow for Friday Night Lights in Ohio Stadium.

"Ohio State had been trying to get me to come to their camps back in June," Conrad told Eleven Warriors. "Tonight we decided we'd go to Friday Night Lights. I sat down and talked it over with my family. They've been really pushing me to go, so I'm going for it."

"It" in this case, is a shot to earn a long coveted Buckeye scholarship offer. Conrad, who committed to Kentucky in the beginning of May, is trying to turn a busy summer into an offer from his childhood favorite. He was one of only six tight ends invited to Nike's The Opening and performed well. Now, he's keeping his mind on the task at hand.

"I'll be getting to Ohio State tomorrow at 6pm with all the other (attendees). Friday Night Lights isn't a private thing at all. I wasn't going to say anything (about going) but I didn't wanna just drop a bomb and show up and have everyone freaking out," Conrad added. "It's a business trip, I am staying very low key, just going and doing what I need to do and leaving."

I think this has to be a case of Harris is helping us with Conrad. He has said in the past that he had already camped and would not camp again for an offer... he was crutin Harris hard during the opening. me reading into this is that Harris told him Im going to OSU you wanna win or go to UK? Now Conrad is willing to camp. Nothing really to base this on other than my opinion.

So a UK commit is giving us the privilege of a visit?

d1145fresh's picture

Not that I don't want him to flip but I've never understood why it is such a big deal to camp at a school. If I was a top level player I would try to go to as many camps as possible during the summer. Every school has coaches who will make you better plus you're going up against other top level talent. This will only help you be a better player in the long run. No matter if he ends up at Ohio State or not.

+12 HS
Texasbucksfan's picture

In the past this kid has been pretty arrogant in his lack of interest in an Ohio State offer, stating plainly that he is firm to UK  has no interest in OSU.   I don't know why he is even coming.   Seems a waste of time for him and our coaching staff to look at him. If he wants to lose with Stoops, let him.  I think we are fine at the TE position.

+11 HS
Nutty's picture

Why the DVs? Conrad has been arrogant about his commit to UK and lack of interest in OSU. That is the truth. If he wants to visit and admit an interest in OSU then so be it.

+10 HS
Squirrel Master's picture

You are confusing arrogance with resentment. Conrad has been a huge buckeye fan and always wanted to come play at OSU. He never lacked interest, he is hurt because of the lack of interest from OSU. THAT is the truth!

wounds can be mended with time and Conrad is starting to look more into his heart. I find it will be hard for him to not think about it if an offer does come his way from Urban.

Growing up a big Buckeye fan and not getting an offer at this point has to be frustrating, especially since he has a lot as it is.  Also after his performance at the opening, he might feel he has done more than enough to earn one.  I'm gonna give an 17-18 year old kid a pass for being "arrogent" about making the biggest decision of his life up to this point, especially when his childhood favorite hasn't offered yet.  The 17-18 year old argument may grow tiresome, but in this case I think it's relevant.  Let's commend the kid for not giving up and trying to get that offer.

+2 HS
Groveport Heisman's picture

He made it sound like he's coming to boost his stock and dipping. Using us as a tool to boost his recruiting rating which basically is a ego stroking. I hope the kid gets offered and commits because I love Ohio talent but he didnt  sound like that was in the plans. Hopefully I'm just older and view things the younger generation say a little differently.

Mark my words..I don't need acceptance. I'm catching interceptions on you innocent pedestrians.

Conrad is coming to OSU for one reason: to get a Buckeye offer. If he gets it, he's going to be a Buckeye. Maybe not immediately, but eventually. Mark that down.

36buck's picture

You saw him in Oregon. If up to you, would you offer?

+3 HS
Jeremy Birmingham's picture

Yes, after seeing him in Oregon I would offer, and that's a change from after I saw him in Columbus at the end of May. He's worked hard, and you can see the improvement. Some guys get a chip on their shoulder and it makes them bitter, unyielding - with CJ it's motivated him to get better and work harder. That to me is a HUGE sign of good things to come for him.

Come on guys, get a grip. You were never angry and said silly things when you were 17? This is obviously something he and his family have agonized over.

He watched several other TE's get offers from his dream school WITHOUT camping while he thought all along he was good enough for an offer. Instead he was told to come and camp if he wants one.

It takes a bigger man to do what he is doing than it does to pout, stomp his feet, and dig his heels in.....

+15 HS
swainpm's picture

Well said. And frankly I don't care why he camps at FNL. If he changed his mind and goes Buckeye, great, if not then I hope he tears it up at UK. College age kids often are growing and maturing throughout their time on campus...so if this young man has a bit of an ego BIG DEAL. Best of luck to him in his hunt for an offer.

+2 HS
buckeyedude's picture

Great comment, Woodshed. I agree 100%. It takes a man to be this humble. I could see some kids saying to themselves, "F&^k it, I'll show them and make them pay! I'll take my talents to_______________ and show them they missed out on a great player!" You know this is the conversation many have that don't get that coveted offer from their favorite, childhood dream school.

Having said that, I hope he gets an offer from Urbz.

js2378's picture

I read on buckeyeplanet that Jake Pickard is not longer attending Friday Night Lights. Have to imagine that these are related; maybe an indication on where Urban & company are leaning regarding an offer for CJ?

Jeremy Birmingham's picture

Ohio State is highly unlikely to offer Pickard, now or in the future. They likely suggested to him that waiting until the fall might be better for him.

Whether he gets an offer, or not, I am glad he is joining fellow Ohioans and getting a chance to learn more and compete.

That's what I thought too. I don't follow recruiting especially closely, but I've seen reports of this kid running his mouth, upset about supposedly being dissed by OSU. If that was all bravado and he's still hoping to get us to offer him, I am certainly willing to let bygones be bygones. Plus, shutting up the annoyingly chatty Kentucky people will be a bonus.

OSU isn't UK, they have to be very selective with their scholarships, and it's pretty obvious they rated the chatty kid who committed to ttun higher. A mistake perhaps? Why yes Barnsey, perhaps. And now this kid has obviously improved, and we want him...stranger things have happened. If he gets the offer he commits...he has too, otherwise there is a good chance that Birm will choking on some leather.

Given our remaining TE prospects, you've got to figure that an offer to one of Ohio's best and the nation's best is a slam dunk.  I'm glad that Conrad kept an open mind to the point of at least making this effort.  I hope he gets what he wants, no matter what it is.

Two reasons I love what's brewing here:

1) Kid's only played TE for a year...transitioned from WR and put on 20 pounds. He's only going to get better, and his rapid improvement over the last six months proves that.

2) He's befriended Damien Harris, and from all accounts, spent as much time with Harris as anyone at The Opening. Harris is obviously wrestling with his decision, and someone like Conrad flipping can only help the cause.

For the commenters who have issues with this kid having an issue that OSU didn't pursue him harder earlier, it would be interesting to see how you'd react as a life-long OSU alum/fan if you (or your child) were to be slow-played by the Buckeyes during the recruiting process while other, higher 'rated' national players were given preferential treatment over you or your son.  Sometimes, it's easier said that done to just flip the switch once OSU finally comes around.  Just sayin'

+1 HS
Eye27's picture

That is exactly what happened to my friend's son last year.  The whole family had always been a big OSU family like a lot of kid's growing up in Ohio.  After he committed to Michigan and their season wasn't going well, I asked my friend what would happen if Ohio State started recruiting him again.  His answer was that too many bridges were burned at that point to consider a flip.  Also, you build relationships with other recruits and the coaches and even the coaches families.  It is harder to flip than you think.  Of course, it never came up because they never really got another strong push from the OSU coaching staff.

Hayze's picture

Did your friend's son happen to be Noah Furbush?

There were rumors Fickell offerec him a scholarship and wanted him but then others on the staff didn't so we had to pull it.

+1 HS
Eye27's picture

Yes.  I was not aware that he was ever offered by OSU.  Noah blew up really quickly on the recruiting scene with his measurable.  Really only really played two years of full time varsity football due to injuries and accepted the scholarship from Michigan early in his senior season.

I respectfully disagree. If you possess humility, you realize that no matter how good you are, there's always somebody out there thats better. Its what should give athletes their edge, their will to never want to quit improving. As a lifetime Buckeye fan that did NOT possess D1 talent, I can tell you that without any uncertainty, that if TOSU wanted me to camp for an offer, they would have had to beat me to the Woody. I know its not quite comparing apples to apples as he has a ton more talent than I ever did, but he's the one that said he was a lifelong Buckeye fan and to me, there is no gray area on that... just my humble opinion...

I had a sneaking suspicion this might play out this way. As a person who grew up with the goal (at an early age) of playing for OSU, I can't imagine that I could have ever passed the opportunity to see if they would extend the offer, even if I thought I had proved I was deserving already. Of course CJ is his own person, but for me personally, I have always been of the opinion that it's not when you get the opportunity, it's what you do with it whenever it comes. I'm convinced that he'll be getting that offer & I hope he's one if the good guys when he does.

Conrad looked awesome at the opening so hopefully we'll offer and he'll commit. I really like the combo of Moore and Conrad.
