Around the Oval: Men's Hockey Ties Miami, Women's Hockey Goes 1-1 in Series With No. 8 Bemidji State and Women's Volleyball Falls to No. 1 Nebraska

Men's hockey Takes miami to OT

The Ohio State football team wasn't the only team that took its opponent to overtime this week. The men's hockey team faced the Miami Redhawks which resulted in a 1-1 overtime draw.  

The David Gust scored first for the Buckeyes just three minutes into the game. In the second period Miami scored on the power play, making the score 1-1. After that there was no scoring for the rest of the game and the two opponents went to overtime. Neither team scored in the five minutes of overtime and the game officially ended in a draw. Senior goalie Matt Tomkins had an impressive 22 saves. The Buckeyes went on to win the shootout when freshman Tanner Laczynski put one past the Redhawk goalie. Technically, the game will be recored as a tie due to NCHC rules, but we all know who really came away from this matchup victorious. 

The No. 19 Buckeyes are certainly off to an solid start this season and will continue their conquest of in-state opponents on October 21 and 22 against Bowling Green. 

women's hockey goes 1-1 with Bemidji State

The women's hockey team took on the Bemidji State Beavers in two different matchups this week. The Buckeyes won the first game, 3-1, the team's first win against a ranked opponent for the season. In the second game, Ohio State fell 4-1 to the Beavers. The Buckeyes are now 3-2-1 for the season. 

In Ohio State's victory over Bemidji, Lauren Spring scored first for the Buckeyes in just the fourth minute of play. Erin Langermeier followed up shortly after with another goal. Rebecca Freiberger scored the final goal of the game off of an assist from Spring, and her first ever for the Scarlet and Gray in the second period to seal the deal for Ohio State, 3-1. Buckeye goalie Kassidy Sauve contributed to the victory with 35 saves for the night. 

The next day the Bucks fell to the Beavers, 4-1. Bemidji scored three of its for goals off of power plays in the second period. The single Ohio State goal of the game came from Ariana DePinto, her first ever at the collegiate level. 

Next, Ohio State will kick off B1G play this Friday in Columbus against Minnesota.

women's volleyball falls to Nebraska, Defeats Iowa

It was an up and down week for the No. 19 Ohio State women's volleyball team. The Buckeyes took on No. 3 Nebraska for the second time this season, this time at home, and lost in a grueling battle of four sets. Later on in the weekend, the Buckeyes broke their three-loss streak with an impressive three set win over Iowa. 

Ohio State lost the first two sets by a close margin of 25-20. The Buckeyes rallied in the third set and got off to an early 13-8 lead. The Huskers tied it 23-23, but Ohio State took the set 25-23. The Buckeyes fought hard to stay alive in the fourth set but ultimately lost 27-25.

Taylor Sandbothe led the Buckeyes in their battle with the Huskers with a dominating 24.5 points, 17 kills, seven blocks, and one service ace. Valeria Leon racked up 16 kills to her all-time tally, followed closely behind by Sandbothe and Luisa Schirmer, each with 13 digs.  

Nebraska, who held the No. 1 spot in the country for the majority of the season, fell to No. 3 after losing to the Buckeyes in Lincoln. Now after leveling the score between the two opponents, Nebraska has risen to No. 1 once again. The Buckeyes remain steady at No. 19. Ohio State and Nebraska are officially 1-1 for the season and will be two teams to watch going into the B1G tournament and post-season play. 

The three set victory over the Hawkeyes was a total team effort for the Buckeyes. Sandbothe led once again with 11 kills for the day, but was followed closely behind by Taylor Hughes with ten and Audra Appold with seven. 

Ohio State will face Penn State next in Happy Valley on Wednesday and then will have a rematch with the Spartans in St. John Arena on Saturday.
