Ohio State excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.

Buckeye olympians Get on the Podium

15 Ohio State bred athletes made the trip to Rio for the 2016 Olympic Games and four of them are coming home with something they didn't have before: an Olympic medal.

Kyle Snyder

Wrestling (USA)

The NCAA champion, world champion, and Ohio State phenomenon Kyle Snyder is now the proud owner of an Olympic gold medal. Snyder, a rising junior at Ohio State, took down Khetag Gazyumov of Azerbaijan 2-1 to win the gold in the 97-kilogram freestyle tournament. Snyder is now the youngest American in history to win a gold medal in wrestling. The Buckeye wrestler defeated Javier Cortina of Cuba, Albert Saritov of Romania, and Elizbar Odikadze of Georgia in his road to the gold medal match. In the semifinal, Snyder came back from a 4-0 deficit to to defeat Odikadze and move on to the final

Ilse Paulis

Rowing (Netherlands)

Isle Paulis, a former Ohio State rower, took home the gold in the women's lightweight double sculls. Paulis and her rowing partner, Maaike Head, secured first place by 1.1 second, just ahead of Canada and China. Isle Paulis was a part of the dominant Ohio State rowing program in 2012 when they took home a national championship.

Nichelle Prince

Soccer (Canada)

Nichelle Prince, senior women's soccer player, is coming back to Columbus with a bronze medal. Prince and the Canadian women's soccer team defeated Brazil 2-1 in the Bronze medal match to get onto the podium. Prince was the first Ohio State women's soccer player in history to make it to the Olympic games and now she's the first one with a medal. Last season, Prince led the Buckeyes in scoring and assists. Now that the Olympics are over, she will be heading back to Columbus, Ohio for her senior season.

Michelle Williams

Swimming (Canada)

Michelle Williams, former Ohio State swimmer, won a bronze medal as a part of Canada's 4x100 freestyle relay team. Williams, who unfortunately did not swim in the final, competed in the qualifying rounds to help secure her team a shot at the podium. The team finished with a time of 32.89 seconds. Williams was a part of the first swimming medal for Canada since 1996.

Women's Soccer defeats Kent state in season opener

The Ohio State women's soccer team had their season opener at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium last Friday in which they took down Kent State 3-0. Lindsay Agnew scored the first goal for the Buckeyes at just the eight minute mark. Freshman Megan Kammerdeiner and junior Nya Cason both scored their first ever goals on the field for Ohio State. Senior goalie Jillian McVicker had five saves which resulted in a shutout for the Buckeyes.
