The year of Gene Smith continues; Ohio State's athletic director picked up another $36,000 today as the women's rowing team captured their second NCAA title in as many years.

The IV8 crew demolished all comers this year, posting a 12-0 record and securing their own, individual national title.

Very cool moment at the #ncaa rowing championships. Ohio State teammates swimming to the winning boat in celebration. Congrats! # bigten

Print the shirts. Back to back champs. Go Bucks!

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

Oh, I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Will be news any time anybody wins a title.

Agreed radar. This is the second or third post regarding Buckeye titles or potential titles that always include Gene Smith bonuses. Move on, nothing to see here.

hetuck's picture

It is a shame that the team accomplishment is overshadowed by immediate comments about the AD's bonus. Gene Smith should quietly renegotiate this aspect of his contract. He doesn't need the money and it is a needless distraction. I'd bet it was inserted by his agent without considering the PR aspects, but Gene blessed it by signing the contract.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

Great job Buckeyes!  I love seeing Ohio State win in anything.

Oh, and it actually might be $54,000.00 for Mean Gene.  Two individual titles plus a team title.

Congrats Buckeyes!  Woot !

Our honor defend, we will fight to the end !

If you can't win your conference, just quietly accept your non-playoff bowl game.

Read williams post below, I think he's serious, a very serious rowing fan

Nah, just notice their boathouse every time I drive by it while on 33.

The varsity women's team has always been a beast.  Unfortunately for the club team, i'm 0-3 vs. those up north people during my time @ school.  I hang my head in shame, I came close once . . .

Please tell me there were a couple of SEC teams present?

Knarcisi's picture

Nah. The SEC champs had a motor on the back end of their vessel. Over half of the crew were also found to be men.  Even the NCAA couldn't look past this as they usually do for the SEC.

That's disgusting that Smith gets a bonus for their hard work.

I thought they only rowed those skinny boats in the Ivy League, but congrats to them.

And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!

On the plus side every time he gets one of these bonuses it highlights how broken NCAA sports are.  All the money for the administrators, they're the real stars!

Read a tweet from Rusty Miller that Gene actually didn't get another bonus because he had hit his bonus for titles ceiling in his contract.

And really, who would have thought that a team that trains on the Olentangy would win a national championship, especially after the craptastic winter/spring that Ohio had. Lots of erg machines in St. Johns I guess, but still... massive kudos!

They train on the Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto, and have an absolutely amazing boathouse.

Lol.  That is amazing.  Makes the boat house I used when I rowed for Dublin look like a card board box, oh wait it was pretty crappy =p

FYI, you can rent it for group events. Great view. This is the facility Spielman (on the air with Hooley) and other UA residents railed against several years ago. I hope the new basketball practice facility yields similar results.

Congrats Lady Bucks! Huge accomplishment.

Pardon the plug, but College of Engineering just posted an Athletics Engineered video last week featuring the women's rowing team. Worth a look if you have 3 minutes...
