Any one thing isn't all that astonishing, but the fact that all these stats and so much more more were realized is crazy. A total game by a team that is getting better and batter.
Go Buckeyes!

I would not agree with that statement.  The overall record is just barely in favor of OSU, and PSU has cleaned our clock a couple of times as well.

In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...

Scarlet_Lutefisk's picture

Since they joined the B1G, PSU is 7-14 vs Ohio State.
Not counting 1994 their biggest win was 23-10 in '99.
Over that same period Ohio State has 10 victories double digits including scores of 24-6, 38-7, 45-6, 28-6, 37-17, 24-7 & 38-14,

The most astonishing thing to me was the defensive domination.  They gave up some yards, but overall, they ravaged the PSU offensive line.

Most astonishing part... Penn State's second touchdown.  Should never have happened.  I just got home from my son's little league championship game before I saw that.  Much better angles, pursuit, and tackling on the pee-wee field than that.
I love Kerry Coombs, but he has got a LOT of work to do to make this a championship secondary, hence a championship defense, hence championship worthy.
Other than that, I'm licking my chops for putting up 80 on scUM.  (BTW, and that's ten TDs with ten 2-point conversions.)

Ethos's picture

holy shit you can NOT be serious!  whatbthe fuck do you do when we lose dude? that was our 2nd and 3rd string defense. give the Coombs bashing a rest for a few days. good lord.

buckeyedude's picture

Dude. You can't be serious. This was the best game the Buckeyes have played on both sides of the ball and you have to dwell on the negative? OSU emasculated the Nitny Kitties with our offense/defense and our pink socks.
Maybe you're surrounded by negative people all the time? I dunno. If you are, you need new friends.

Uh....well....let's see.......since that play came with bench players I think there's nothing to complain about here....think you should know the whole story before complaining about something like that.

lamplighter's picture

I chose other for all of the above.  Nice to see them clicking on offense, defense and special teams.  Nice to smack the PSU'ers in the mouth at the start and keep up the pressure
Next up Purdue - little bit of payback?

Alhan's picture

Payback for sure.  Based on this week's game, I expect there to be no struggles with Purdue like we've seen in the past few years.

I voted "other" as well because it was most astonishing that all of those things happened in one game.

TMac's picture

Defense!! - PSU had NO completions to a tight end! who saw that coming ??
All of the above!

RedStorm45's picture

We scored 63 last year aginst Nebraska, a B1G team.

Nicholas Jervey's picture

True, but "most ever" is accurate and catchier than "tied for most ever". The difference in points allowed makes the comparison feel pretty good too.

Ceci n'est pas une signature.

misterpants's picture

... and I was at the Shoe when tOSU hung 70 on Northwestern. I think Bob Atha played three quarters that day.
A quick look through the interwebs indicates that we scored 83 against Iowa in 1950, though I can't claim to have seen that in person.

Nicholas Jervey's picture

I mangled the statistic, then. In some way, the 63 points is record setting; it might be the most a Big Ten opponent has ever scored against Penn State. In any case, my apologies.

Ceci n'est pas une signature.

buckeyedude's picture

As Trump would say, "You're fired, Nick."  ;)

misterpants's picture

No need to apologize. According to the Centre Daily Times, the newspaper of record in Happy Valley:

It added up to the most points allowed by Penn State since 1900. The Nittany Lions allowed 106 points at Lehigh on Nov. 11, 1889 and allowed 64 points to the Duquesne Athletic Club on Nov. 25, 1899.

Given that, you are correct in that last night's 63 is the highest point total any B1G team has hung on Penn State.

Other- the re-emergence of the first team defensive backs.  Best game I've seen this year from Brad and Doran.  Shut that Robinson kid down in first half (he got his big play against Reeves).

The postgame show is brought to you by... Christ, I can't find it. The hell with it...

Yeah that was our second string D.

I wasn't born a Buckeye but I became one as fast as I could.

buckeyedude's picture

Agreed. Even the little bit I saw Armani Reeves, he seemed to play well yesterday.

I liked that we had 8 players with carries who averaged 7.7 yards per carry or more.

I was also at that game in '94 but last night I was at home and it was still sweet.

Just curious Mr. Green: was it cold in The Shoe last night and at the tailgate? It rained a little bit up here in NW Ohio just before the game, and I was glad that didn't move south.

It's always warm when the Buckeyes are winning.

Other.

Saw a true pass defense emerge last night....consistent pass rush, improved coverage, turnovers.

More please.

I am not very smart, but I recognize that I am not very smart.

throttlefinger's picture

Pass D looked good Hovenaut yet I think the DL pressure rattled Hackenberg to make some bad throws when receivers were wide open...the kind of plays that Stave and Rudock nailed for big gains.
Overall they played much better, but I'm gonna give larger kudos to Spence and the line. More of that will make it easier for the secondary to gain confidence and grow as a unit.

joel121270's picture

Pass D is helped because of the constant pressure from the D line, blitzing more, and a dude named Noah. Not gonna happen every game but if it does..look out.

MN Buckeye's picture

Or as the whiners complain on that other site, Holding Penn State. Just ridiculous.

shadybuck's picture

I cannot believe that team has beaten any FBS school, the team that showed up in the horseshoe last night was almost a complete joke, their first drive wasnt too bad until the pittsburg interception, but the rest of that game was just remarkably comedic

ScarletGray43157's picture

I'm in for the matching score.  What was even more ironic about it is that just before the long TD that gave Penn State their 14 point total Keels and Lachey were, in the radio broadcast, talking about that 1994 game and the final score and how this game's score reminded them of that game.
The game itself was amazing overall for OSU's dominance.
I say put up permanent lights and play at least 4 games every year under the lights.

In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...

USMC11917's picture

Other. The pass defense playing as well as it did and holding the Cryons to 7+(Bizzaro 7) points.

IH8UOFM's picture

The total yards number is something out of a video game, considering its conference play. As soon as hackenberg threw that pick in the endzone in the first quarter, it just felt like they had the wind taken out of their sails....

ScarletNGrey01's picture

Agreed.  And you wonder if their first score would have happened if that ridiculous horse collar call on Shazier had not happened.  Oh well, bucks got a call or two (or non-call actually), the one play where Roby pushed Robinson a couple of times, lucky the bucks did not get a whistle on that.

The fact that Ohio State kept its foot on the gas. Penn State knew exactly how inferior they are to Ohio State when it is operating at full capacity. It was a beautiful reminder of how little Penn State is respected.
The ensuing butt hurt caused by Meyer's antics is a close second.
The assumption Meyer was going to PSU and that they are somehow better for him not being there comes in third.

Yesterday was just an awesome day.

Do I come off as arrogant? Shame on me, I was hoping it would be more obvious.

It was pretty sweet to beat the previous team best against PSU at 45-6.

And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!

I put other because: all of the above.  Everything about it was shocking.  I saw a close shoot out with lots of blown coverage from the secondary, and I don't think anybody saw the offensive explosion that occurred.  WOW!!

It was great to get some redemption from the beating we took in 1994.  I thought it was great that it was the same score.
In reality, if Urban wanted to run the score up I think that we could have scored 80 or 90 at least while holding them to 7.  They only scored on that long run because there was a lot of young backups in against the PSU 1s.
Overall, great job all around by the Buckeyes!  Let's keep it rolling against Purdue.
Go Bucks!

Maybe not astonishing, but I found it interesting and exciting that yesterday was Urban's 7th (if i remember the statistic correctly) 50+ point game. Tress had 6 in total during tenure at tOSU.
