While I usually do the offense, the defense’s effort deserved a first look. Still, as Kyle Jones has pointed out, the offense didn’t struggle quite as much as people seem to think, though I think most Ohio State fans are taking the correct approach to Saturday's performance: the running game was encouraging, and the passing game will be fine.

One of the things that became obvious as I charted all the offensive plays is that Notre Dame had largely the same plan as Michigan – force Ohio State to run the ball by having a light box. Notre Dame was almost exclusively in nickel the entire game, just like Michigan. Whereas Michigan continuously stopped the ball even with a numbers disadvantage, Notre Dame did not have anywhere near the same success.

Some of the slow-going on the offensive side was due to lower receiver and quarterback production in the first half, and some of it was intentional, especially after the second touchdown in the third quarter. By the end of the game, Stroud and the receivers were playing as expected, and the Buckeyes could run whenever they wanted.

The play-by-play chart is below:

Offensive Play-by-Play Analysis vs. Notre Dame
Time Yard Line Down Distance O Formation D Package Front High Type Box Play Player Yards Notes
First Quarter
12:05 O25 1 10 Gun HZ Tight 4-2-5   1 RPO 8 RPO Mid Zone Henderson 18 Henderson (+1) has good vision to cut the play back inside for a modest gain. Hands to the face on Dawand Jones. If this is an RPO, I think it is a fine read.
11:58 O43 1 10 Gun HZ Tight 4-2-5   2 Pass 7 Flood Variation Stroud -5 ND sends a blitz. Henderson (+0.5) actually does a great job coming across the formation to pick up a blitzing linebacker. Jackson (-0.5) is ultimately beat. Protection (-0.5). ND gets to Stroud semi-quickly, but Ohio State actually held up the blitz to nearly the average time. Stroud (-2) makes a bad read and misses a wide open receiver on a corner route. Good defensive call. Play-calling -1.
11:06 O39 2 15 Gun 4-3 Base 3 Pass 7 Flood Variation Smith-Njigba 0 Stroud (-1) gets great protection, but can't get the ball to Smith-Njigba. The pass is inaccurate and JSN can't make the circus catch. Protection +0.5
11:01 O39 3 15 Gun Y Flex Trips Right 3-2-6 Over ABC Pass 5 Spacing Egbuka 8 Stroud  rolls out and throws a good pass to Egbuka, who makes a routine catch short of the sticks. Did not try to get all 15-yards. Fine with this if you have confidence in the defense. Punt.
7:06 O46 1 10 Gun Wing TE Mtn H 4-2-5 Under 1 Pass 6 H Mtn Screen Smith-Njigba 4 Smith-Njigba gets injured on this play. Like the play-call, but ND was ready for it.
6:32 O50 2 6 Gun Twin TE 4-2-5 Boundary 1 RPO 7 RPO Go Egbuka 15 Like the play-call here. Stroud (+1) makes the right read and throws a good ball, but Egbuka gets held. Play-calling +1.
6:26 N35 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 4-3 Over 2 Pass 7 Divide Harrison 0 Stroud (+1) throws a good pass to Harrison, who can't make the spectacular catch. Play-calling +1.
6:20 N35 2 10 Gun Twin TE FZ Tight 4-2-5 Over 1 RPO 8 RPO Screen Egbuka 4 Stroud (+0.5) makes a good read and gets the ball out to Egbuka. Egbuka gets what his blocking gets him.
5:58 N31 3 6 Gun 3-3-5 Tite 1 Pass 8 Pivot Egbuka 31 Stroud (+3) throws a perfect pass to Egbuka (+1), who makes a routine catch before finishing the play for the touchdown. Play-calling +1.
3:28 O28 1 10 Ace 3W H Tight 3-3-5 Tite 1 Run 8 Split Zone Williams 8 Wypler falls down here, not sure why. Stover (+1) gets an excellent block here. Egbuka (+0.5) gets enough of a block to give Williams (+1) some space.
3:15 O36 2 2 Gun Wing TE 4-2-5 ABC ABC Pass 6 Rollout Hitch Harrison 0 Stroud (-0.5) throws an okay pass to Harrison (-2),  and the difficult catch was not made. He was open. Harrison could have easily caught this, but he got caught waiting for the ball instead of coming up on it. Stroud talked to Harrison after this play and it didn't happen again.
3:02 O36 3 2 Gun Trips Z Wide 3-3-5 Tite 1 Read Option 7 Zone Read Williams 0 Stroud (+1) correctly hands the ball off here, though it is close. Defender played it well. Wypler (-0.5) doesn't get to the second level fast enough, and it seems like Jackson (-0.5) needed the extra help.
Second Quarter
11:56 O25 1 10 Gun Wing TE Z Tight 4-2-5 Base   Penalty   False Start Dawand Jones -5 Dawand Jones (-1).
11:55 O20 1 15 Pistol 3W Y Flex 4-2-5 Wide 1 Run   Mid Zone Henderso 9 Some exception al blocks from Dawand Jones (+2) and Ballard (+1) gives Henderson some room.
11:41 O29 2 6 Gun Wing TE 4-2-5 Over 1 Run   Pitch Henderson 3 Henderson gets the pitch for a few yards.
11:19 O32 3 3 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Under 1 Pass   Omaha Harrison 20 Stroud (+1) throws a good pass to Harrison (+0.5) who makes a routine catch. Play-calling +1.
10:33 N48 1 10 ABC ABC ABC ABC Pass   TE Flat Stover 1 Stroud throws an okay pass to Stover (+1), who makes a spectacular catch.
9:57 N46 2 9 Gun 4-3 Under 2 Pass 7 Slot Cross Harrison 0 Stroud (-2)  decides to try to fit the ball into a tight window instead of picking up guaranteed yards, potentially a first down. He makes a bad read and Harrison can't come down with a difficult catch. Criticisms of his lack of desire to run are overblown, but this was the perfect opportunity to do so. Protection (+1) was excellent.
9:50 N46 3 9 Gun Y Flex HY Stack 4-2-5 4-1 Boundary 2 Pass 6 Ohio Egbuka 6 Really like the call here. Stover sets the pick for Egbuka, who receives a good pass from Stroud and makes a routine catch. Egbuka slowed up at the end where he might have been able to get an extra yard or so. Either way, it is a punt. Play-calling +1. I would have liked to see them go for it here, but oh well.
5:31 O24 1 10 Gun Twin TE Jet Mtn 4-2-5 Field 2 Run 7 Power Williams 8 Offensive line seems to be set up perfectly, but they don't get as much of a push as I would have expected. Williams (+2) somehow gets 8 after getting stopped in the backfield. Matt Jones (-1) gets nothing and Rossi/Williams are forced to bounce it outside. Rossi (+1) is able to get a good block to seal the inside.
4:59 O32 2 2 Gun HZ Tight 4-2-5 Show Blitz 1 Run 7 Inside Zone Williams 3 Wypler (+0.5) and Jones (+0.5) have a decent combo block on the inside, but Williams ( -1) tries to bounce it outside. He does a nice job to get the first down, but he missed a hole and a couple yards.
4:24 O35 1 10 Ace 3W H Mtn Tight 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 7 PA Flat Smith-Njigba -2 Stroud (-1)  sees the rush and throws a checkdown to Smith-Njigba, who makes the routine catch. I thought Harrison looked like he was coming open, but it is hard to say. Johnson (-0.5) gets beat a bit, but it isn't bad protection overall. Stroud made the adjustment later to roll out of the pocket instead of immediately go to the checkdown.
4:11 O34 2 11 Gun Y Flex Wide 4-2-5 Wide 2 Pass 6 Spot Variation Stover 6 Don't recognize this route concept. Feels like Spot. Regardless, Stroud (+0.5) throws a good pass to Stover (+0.5) who makes a routine catch before taking a shot.
3:29 O40 3 5 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 6 Ohio Egbuka 12 Stroud throws a good pass to Egbuka (+0.5), who makes a routine catch. W Similar concept as the one from 9:50, but it works this time as Egbuka (+0.5) has a bit more space and only has six yards to go. Stover (+0.5) with a nice block. Play-calling +1.
2:49 N48 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 6.5 PA TE Flat Stover 7 Stroud (+0.5) recognizes the blitz and throws it to the checkdown Stover (+1), who makes a routine catch and runs over the defender to get additional yardage.
2:12 N41 2 3 Gun 4-2-5 Wide 1 Run 6 Inside Zone Henderson 16 The offensive line gets a couple of yards, but doesn't present a clear gap. Wypler (+1) gets an excellent push. Henderson (+2) sees the opportunity to cut back, shakes off a tackle, and bounces it back toward the field. Stroud (+1) gets a decent downfield block to get Henderson a few more free yards. Missed a facemask.
1:38 N25 1 10 Gun Twin TE Pair Field 3-4 Tite 1 Pass 8 PA Fade Egbuka 0 Rossi (-1) gets pushed back so Jackson can't get to the edge to block the end, though Stroud may have rushed the rollout which causes a pressure.. Still, Stroud (+0.5) throws a good pass to Egbuka (-0.5), who can't make the spectacular catch. These usually get called for PI if the receiver comes back to the ball. Egbuka needs to come back to the ball instead of fading away. Still, I think he did that because the ball was a little short and he expected it higher.  As it is, great coverage from the corner. Play-calling +1 for getting the matchup.
1:17 N25 2 10 Gun Twin TE Pair Boundary 4-3 Over 2 Run 7.5 Mid Zone Henderson 6 Henderson (-1.5) cuts this up too fast and gets tackled quick. Jackson  (+1.5) has an outstanding block and nearly takes out two defenders.. Johnson (-1) leaves the end after Stover initially makes contact. How I understand it, Johnson needs to finish that block as Stover moves up to the linebacker. Timeout
0:45 N21 3 6 Gun Y Flex Trips Right 4-2-5 Over 1 Pass 6 Mesh Variation Egbuka 0 None of the wide receivers are ready for the snap, and Stroud is looking that way.  If Stroud (-1) throws this sooner or Egbuka (-2) sits down after recognizing the linebacker in zone, this is a touchdown. Neither are great. Stroud throws a good pass and Egbuka can't make the difficult catch. Excellent Protection +1. Missed Field Goal.
Third Quarter
15:00 O25 1 10 Gun HZ Tight 4-2-5 Over 1 Pass 6 Curl Harrison 0 Stroud (-1) throws an inaccurate pass to Harrison, who can't make the difficult catch. Not too far off, but it is clear that Stroud wants this ball on the right shoulder.
14:56 O25 2 10 Gun Tight Wing TE 4-2-5 Over 2 RPO 7 RPO Screen Egbuka 5 I wouldn't have minded a hand-off on the counter, but this is a fine read with the safety playing back. Stroud with a good read. Egbuka with a routine catch.
14:40 O29 3 6 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 6 Mesh/Curl? Harrison 0 Interesting play design. Looks like it starts out as a mesh route across the middle, but Henderson isn't off on a wheel and the crossers stop. Stroud looks like he wants to throw to JSN but doesn't, probably because the safety dropped down. Kind of a weird situation. Stroud (-1) throws an okay pass after coming back to it, and Harrison can't make the spectacular catch. Play-calling -1. Protection +1. Punt.
11:53 O7 1 10 Gun Twin TE Pair Field 4-3 Under 1 Run 8 Mid Zone Williams 4 Dawand Jones (+1) with a good pancake block, Matt Jones (+0.5) has a nice block as well to give Williams a hole.
11:24 O11 2 6 Pistol 3W Y Flex 4-2-5 Under 1 Run 6.5 Mid Zone Williams 8 Dawand Jones (+1) and Matt Jones (+1) again have excellent blocks to give Williams an easy hole. Williams (+1) trucks the defensive back and might have gotten a huge play if he could have stayed in bounds.
11:00 O19 1 10 Gun HZ Tight 4-2-5 Under 2 Run 7 Duo Williams 3 Matt Jones (-0.5) and Wypler (-0.5) both start to vacate the tackle, and Williams (+0.5) has to bounce outside to get a few. Dawand Jones (+1) with a really nice block to reach the playside defender and seal inside after Williams bounces it.
10:41 O22 2 7 Gun Y Flex Trips Bunch Empty 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 6 WR Screen Egbuka 5 Stover (+2) completely clears out the corner. Ballard (-1) gets pushed back into Egbuka. Would have been an easy first down. Play-calling +1.
10:16 O27 3 2 Pistol 3W 4-2-5 Under 1 Run 7 QB Sneak Stroud 3 Phenomenal play-call and execution. Play-calling +2 to get the easy first down. Players did great but this one goes to the play-caller.
9:58 O30 1 10 Gun Trips 4-2-5 Under 3 Pass 7 Corner Stover 0 Stroud throws a good pass and Stover can't come down with the difficult catch. This was the correct read and a difficult pass; I think Stover comes down with this more often than not. Just jumped a little late. Tough play on both ends, but I mostly like the execution. Just off.
9:52 O30 2 10 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 6 PA Hitch Ballard 4 Johnson (-0.5) gets beat to the inside, but he holds up long enough. Stroud (+1.5) does a nice job to spin out of the pocket and make a good throw to Ballard on the sideline, who makes a routine catch. Protection -0.5.
9:44 O34 3 6 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 6.5 Short Circus Egbuka 4 Stroud makes a good throw to Egbuka, who makes a difficult catch. Stroud might have been able to make the throw, but is hurried after Dawand Jones (-1) gets beat to the outside. Egbuka was open, but even though the defender had inside leverage, he stayed on his hip the whole way. Corner would get a +1 here. Play-calling +1; this works with adequate blocking. Protection -0.5.
5:00 O30 1 10 Ace 4-2-5 Boundary 2 Pass 7 PA Flood Egbuka  16 Henderson (-1) gets to the blitzer late, and Stroud (+4) rolls out of the pocket before delivering a perfect throw to Egbuka (+2), who makes a difficult catch. I've seen grumbling over this play call, but I don't mind it. It's an eight man protection, the two routes are intentional. Also, Day correctly guessed there would be a blitz.Matt Jones (-1) gets away with a blatant hold. Don't mind Dawand's guy getting free, CJ had to vacate backward. What a play.
4:40 O46 1 10 4-2-5       Penalty   False Start Dawand Jones -5 Dawand Jones (-1).
4:40 O41 1 15 Pistol 3W Y Flex 4-2-5 Over 1 Pass 6 PA Comeback Harrison 11 Stroud (+1) makes a good through and Harrison (+1) makes a routine catch.
4:24 N48 2 4 ABC ABC ABC ABC Run ABC Outside Zone? Henderson 5 Nice block from Stover (+1) gives Henderson (+0.5) enough space to take the first down.
3:22 N43 1 10 Pistol 3W 4-2-5 Wide 1 Run 7 Outside Zone Henderson 8 Jackson (+2) gets a pancake. Dawand Jones (+1) and Harrison (+1) have good blocks too.
3:15 N36 2 2 Pistol 3W 4-2-5 Under 3 Run 7 Outside Zone Henderson 2 Wypler (-1) goes on the other side of Jackson (+1). Henderson does a nice job of getting the first.
2:42 N34 1 10 Gun Y Flex H Mtn 4-2-5 Over 1 Pass 7 Streak Harrison 0 Stroud throws an inaccurate pass to Harrison, and the ball is uncatchable.
2:17 N34 2 10 Gun Y Flex H Mtn 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 7 Curls Ballard 11 Stroud (+1) throws a good pass to Ballard (+0.5), who secures the routine catch and gets the first down. Play-calling +1.
1:44 N23 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Under 1 Run 8 Counter Trey Henderson 4 Solidly executed all-around. Johnson (+1) has a nice combo block on the outside, but Henderson cuts back inside to get the sure yards. Don't mind that decision in the red zone.
1:18 N19 2 6 Gun HZ Tight 4-2-5 Wide 2 Pass 7 Scramble Henderson -15 Henderson (+2) with a great block, and should not have been called a cut block. Defender wasn't engaged with Wypler. Jackson (-1) holds his defender though. Penalty puts them back.
1:03 N34 2 21 Gun Y Flex Trips Right 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 6 Curl Xavier Johnson 10 Stroud (+1) throws a good pass to Xavier Johnson (+0.5), who makes the routine catch.
0:37 N24 3 11 Gun Y Flex 3-2-6 Show Blitz 2 Pass 5 Skinny Post Xavier Johnson 24 Stroud (+3) sees the safety blitz and throws a perfect pass off his back foot to Xavier Johnson (+2), who makes a routine catch securing it in the endzone. Johnson had a gorgeous route to beat his man, who had inside leverage. Nifty. Stroud saw the blitz and immediately had the touchdown. Play-calling +1.
Fourth Quarter
11:57 O5 1 10 ABC ABC ABC ABC Run ABC ABC Henderson 4 Looks like Henderson got a fine run here, but I couldn't really tell much. Rossi (+0.5) had a fine lead block.
11:33 O9 2 6 Gun 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 6 Split Zone Henderson 8 Don't know why ND is still playing two safeties back. Dawand Jones (-1) misses a block, but Henderson (+1.5) runs through the defender for the first down. Wypler (+1) with a nice block.
11:13 O17 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 6 Rollout Hitch Harrison 5 Henderson (+1) with a good lead block. Stroud throws a good pass to Harrison, who makes a routine catch.
10:33 O21 2 6 Gun 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 6 Quick Pitch Henderson 3 Henderson (+1) is able to make one man miss. Ohio State tries to catch ND off-guard, but they were ready. Play-calling -1 for snapping the ball early.
10:24 O24 3 3 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Show Blitz 1 Pass 7 Mesh Improvisation Williams 12 After rolloing to his left, Stroud (+4) throws a perfect pass to Williams (+3), who makes a spectacular catch on the sideline. Jackson (-1) and Paris Johnson (-1) let early pressure despite the three rushers. Play-calling -1, as Ohio State was expecting a man blitz resulting in Mesh, and ND dropped eight. Protection -2.
9:36 O36 1 10 Pistol 3W 3-3-5 Under 2 Run 6 Stretch Williams 4 Williams (+1) gets hit in the backfield and still gets four. Impressive.
9:18 O40 2 6 Pistol 3W 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 6.5 PA Rollout Comeback Harrison 11 Stroud (+2) throws a perfect pass, and Harrison (+2) makes a spectacular catch. Play-calling +1 for rolling away from the blitz.
9:11 N49 1 10   4-2-5     Penalty   False Start Dawand Jones -5 Dawand Jones (-1). Struggling with tempo.
8:59 O46 1 15 Gun 4-2-5 Over 3 Run 6 Split Zone Williams 13 Wypler (+2) handles a perfectly timed blitz beautifully. Williams (+2)  bucks forward for a big chunk of yards. Love the way he runs. Stroud actually sells a keep well-enough to hold the backside. Wild.
8:09 N43 1 10 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Over 1 Pass 6 PA Comeback Harrison 9 Stroud (+1) makes a good throw and Harrison (+1) makes a tough catch. Nicely done on both sides.
7:34 N34 1 10 Pistol 4-2-5 Under 1 Run 5.5 Outside Zone Williams 5 Wypler (+1) with a nice reach block at the point of attack. Xavier Johnson (+0.5) gets a solid block.
7:04 N29 2 5 Gun 4-2-5 Over 1 Run 6.5 Outside Zone Williams 15 Matt Jones (+1) has a solid block and Williams (+2) breaks several tackles.
6:11 N14 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 6.5 GT Counter Williams 12 Perfect time to break out counter. Needs to be a part of the offense this year. Vimahi (+0.5) and Dawand Jones (+0.5) execute their blocks and Williams (+1.5) gets an extra 7. Unbelievable effort from Williams. Play-calling +1.
5:41 N2 1 2 Goal Line Goal Line Goal Line 0 Run 9  Outside Zone Williams 0 Notre Dame is selling out for the run. Amazing they  got back to the line given personnel. Play-calling -1.
4:56 N2 2 2 Goal Line Goal Line Goal Line 0 Run 11 Tight Zone Williams 2 Vimahi (+1), Wypler (+1) and Jackson (+1) get enough of a push to get Williams (+0.5) to the endzone.
3:40 O11 1 10 ABC ABC ABC ABC Run 7 ABC Henderson 12 Henderson (+2) trucks a defender and spins off another to gain an extra double-digit yards. Wypler (+1) with a good block.
3:22 O23 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 6 Split Zone Henderson 5 Jackson (+1) gets a bit and Henderson follows.
2:37 O28 2 5 Gun 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 6 Quick Pitch Henderson 4 They've run this play a couple of times. Fake the look toward the sideline and run a play to what would normally be the backside. Dawand Jones (-0.5)  could have made the block that would have really sprung Henderson, but it is all good. Rossi (+1) has a nice block here.
1:41 O32 3 1 Ace Twin TE Pair Boundary 4-2-5 Over 2 Run 7 QB Sneak Stroud 3 Play-Calling +1.
1:15 O35 1 10 Victory                 Kneel. End of Game.
End of Game

The biggest story of the day is easily the running game, between the offensive linemen and the running backs. The offensive chart is below.

Offensive Chart
Player + - T Percentage Notes
offensive line
donovan jackson 9 3 6 75 Not a bad first effort. Showed off his strength. Had a couple issues.
luke wypler 11 2 9 84.6 Really picked it up later in the game. Looks much improved from last year.
paris johnson jr. 4.5 3 1.5 60 Wasn't spectacular against the run, but was excellent against the pass. Tough assignment for first game at left tackle, but he played well.
Dawand jones 10 5.5 4.5 64.5 Actually good game, minus the three false starts. Still, three false starts is bad.
matthew jones 6 2.5 3.5 70.6 Fine on a sick day. Can't complain.
ennok vimahi 1.5 0 1.5 100 Solid play when he was substituted into the game.
josh fryar 0 0 0 0 Came in for a Goal Line snap.
Zen Michalski 0 0 0 0 Special Teams
Total 42 16 26 72.4 Not as dominant as I expected, but very good nonetheless.
Running Backs
cj stroud 28.5 9.5 19 75 Before the last couple of drives, Stroud was only at +1. Huge end of the game.
miyan williams 13.5 1 12.5 93.1 The highest I have graded a running back with less than 15 carries. Unbelievably good.
treveyon henderson 11.5 2 9.5 85.2 Honestly the best I've seen him run as well. Vision looks improved, though it is one game.
Total 53.5 12.5 41 81.1 Running backs were better than I expected, and I expected best in the Big Ten.
receivers
jaxon smith-njigba 0 0 0 0 Get well soon.
julian fleming 0 0 0 0 Get well soon.
emeka egbuka 4.5 3 1.5 60 Looks like the go to when JSN is out, though Harrison was targetted more late. Little rocky early, but I don't expect that to continue.
Marvin Harrison Jr. 5.5 2 3.5 73.3 Started slow, but was much more effective in the second half.
Cade Stover 7 0 7 100 Best I've graded a tight end. Significantly improved from last year. Looks like a different player.
Mitch Rossi 2.5 1 1.5 71.4 First-team tight end at the end of the game during the last couple drives.
jayden ballard 1.5 1 0.5 60 Important catch before the second touchdown. Still don't think he is quite at Egbuka/Fleming's level.
xavier johnson 3 0 3 100 Career game. Genuinely had a sharp route on the touchdown. Does not look out of place with these other receivers.
Gee scott jr. 0 0 0 0 Kneeling plays only.
joe royer 0 0 0 0 Special Teams only
total 24 7 17 77.4 The receivers normally score abnormally well. This time, though, it was Stover that led the way with the receivers lagging a bit.
metrics
protection 3.5 4 -0.5   Not bad against an excellent pass rush. I only give positives for longer developing plays, which there were few. Positives are added to each individual in the group.
play calling 15 5 10   Do not agree with complaints about the play-calling. It looked good to me.

While I thought the offensive line looked more comfortable in run blocking than last year, Luke Wypler was the player to make the biggest improvement. At times last year, Wypler was the biggest liability on the line. A very good line, sure, but he was still the weak link. In this game, he certainly looked like he took the next step, as he was excellent both in pass protection and in the run game. Like the entirety of the offensive line, he played better as the game went on.

The other offensive linemen had a solid day. Jackson was pretty good, PJJ was pretty good, Matt Jones was pretty good, and Dawand Jones was good outside of his three false starts, all during tempo I believe. This feels like something that will be cleaned up, considering he only made this mistake when they were running tempo, and even then I didn’t think it was as egregious as false starts sometimes are. He was jumping early, but that is not totally unusual. Also, as a general offensive line note, there was also a GT counter on the Miyan Williams drive (4Q 6:11). The counter took ND completely off guard and gave Williams an easy 12-yard run. This game had more run diversity than I have seen in a while from Ohio State, and hopefully it is a sign of things to come.

Based on how well Ohio State ran the ball, I expected the offensive line scores to be a little better, honestly. When I re-watched it though, both Miyan Williams and Treveyon Henderson had tremendous games. Williams came out of the game as the biggest offensive story. I said multiple times last year that I thought Williams was the better runner between the two, and he seemed to validate that in this game. That final touchdown drive not only had the two runs (4Q 8:59, 4Q 7:04) where he broke multiple tackles, but it also included the sideline catch (4Q 10:24) from Stroud. Miyan Williams is an excellent running back, and I hope that Ohio State uses him about this often moving forward. This felt like the perfect balance between he and Henderson.

Speaking of Henderson, I thought he ran better than he has in a long time, at least since the Tulsa game. He looked much more patient, and even had a run at the end (4Q 3:40) where he breaks multiple tackles. I am still reserving my judgment on if he has improved running the football for a few more games, but his vision looked much improved. He bounced the ball outside if it was there, but also wasn’t afraid to cut it back up if he thought he could get a guaranteed 4-yards. If he has gained the maturity to be every down back with his physical ability, he will be the guy that most people thought he was last year.

With one exception, the receiver group did not score as well as they were scoring last year, which is perhaps to be expected. Here is their chart:

Receiver Chart vs. Notre Dame
Player Uncatchable Spectacular Difficult Routine Notes
jaxon smith-njigba   0/1   2/2 Get well soon.
julian fleming         Get well soon.
emeka egbuka   0/1 2/3 7/7 Played pretty well. Missed a couple of little things, but he passes the eye test.
marvin harrison jr. 1 1/3 1/4 3/3 Made some impressive catches, but he probably should have made a couple of more difficult catches. Got better as the game went on.
cade stover   1/1 0/1 2/2 Looks much better downfield than I was expecting. Might get drafted.
mitch rossi         No targets
Jayden ballard       2/2 As much as he played, I am a little surprised he didn't have more targets.
xavier johnson       2/2 Again, career game. He is good enough to contribute in the best WR room in the country.
gee scott jr.         No targets.
joe royer         Special Teams
Kamryn Babb         DNP

Cade Stover had an outstanding game. He’s another guy that has improved so much that it is hard to believe it is the same guy from last year. He has always been able to block, but even so, I was more impressed with his blocking than I was at any point last year. On top of that, Stover added a downfield element to his repertoire as well. Yes, Ohio State does not throw to the tight ends. I still am excited to see him the rest of this year, as he looks the part of a good, balanced tight end.

The rest of the receivers kind of had up and down games. To be more precise, they had down and up games, as both Egbuka and Harrison played worse than anticipated in the first half, but they played much better after halftime. While I should probably be more worried about this group considering who it lost, I have no concerns at all. They were consistently well covered, which personally I think says more about Notre Dame than Ohio State.

They clearly tailored the offense to Smith-Njigba, and I imagine that the gameplan for this game was somewhat like the Rose Bowl in terms of volume of targets. It looked like JSN was going to be the primary target all day, instead of the more evenly spread distribution of 2021. It doesn’t surprise me that losing him was significant. I do hope that they use the next couple of weeks to learn how to cope without him if they need to.

The guy throwing them the ball was a little off, but not much:

CJ Stroud Passing Chart
CJ Stroud Perfect Good Scramble Pressure Okay Batted Throw Away Inaccurate Bad Read RPO Read Options Pass Percentage General Percentage Notes
Notre dame 5 17 0 0 3 0 0 3 2 4/4 1/1 81.5 75 Quiet but effective. First meaningful game where he was the veteran.

Much like the receiver group, I have no real concerns about Stroud. His track record and pedigree is even more impressive than the receiver’s group, and he made a number of high level throws on Saturday. Stroud was at his best when he needed to be at his best. I will always defend Stroud for not running, as it is nowhere near as big of a deal as people make it. He could have definitely scrambled for good yardage at 9:57 left in the second quarter, but that is really the only play where I think it made sense. Furthermore, the only read option play I saw him had he correctly read to give the ball. He is a pure pocket passer with some good athleticism, and the coaching staff is coaching him to play this way.

I think part of it is a concern from Day given what happened in 2019 and 2020, where Justin Fields was injured both years down the stretch, taking away an important element of the offense during the most important part of the year. I think Day wants to develop an offense that needs as little QB running as possible to make sure they never find themselves in that position again.

To be fair to Stroud though, he did make three separate scrambles where he escaped pressure, rolled out of the pocket, and threw completions to Jayden Ballard (3Q 9:52), Emeka Egbuka (3Q 5:00), and (4Q 10:24) Miyan Williams. Last year, I think he tries to find the easy checkdown. By extending the play, he is risking losing yards, but he can also give the receivers another chance to get open. While I don’t know if he will do this all that often, it is nice he can make these throws and use his legs in a way that is still consistent with being a pocket passer. Last year, he consistently threw to the checkdown when under pressure, which resulted in easy, short completions that the defense could rally to. Dwayne Haskins had this same tendency, leading to teams attacking them in similar ways. By rolling out of the pocket, Stroud can turn some of these pressure situations into big plays, like he did against Notre Dame. Hopefully it was not just a one-time thing, as his rollout plays were arguably the biggest in the game.

What should we worry about?

The offensive line’s pass protection was a little spotty at times, but it still wasn’t bad given the front they were up against. Still, that’s probably the easiest gripe. The reason Stroud had to rollout multiple times was due to quite a bit of pressure, and some of these pressures occurred when he had 7-8 blockers. While I am generally bullish on the line’s performance, this is one area to watch out for in the coming weeks.

Also, JSN’s health is the most important thing for this offense to reach its potential. While I don’t think his injury is too serious, any lingering injury could cause lots of problems for this offense.

What should we not worry about?

The passing game in general. Ryan Day is probably the single coach in college football you must worry about the least when it comes to passing the football. They will be a good passing team. Much in the same way that Georgia will be good at defending the run and Alabama will recruit well. It doesn’t matter how it looks like in the pre-season or even Game 1. They will get it fixed.

What should we be excited about?

Ohio State faced the Michigan gameplan again against a team with similar talent and came out on top. They had something to fix, and it looked like they fixed it on the ground and on defense. Of course, maybe this is just a lucky first game. First impressions are good.

The improved running game with the passing offense we expect has the potential to be the best Ohio State offense we have ever seen. It is almost impossible to make any judgments after a single week, but the ceiling for this offense is impossibly high. Because of that, I think most of the national media is sleeping on Ohio State’s potential based on the first game. We will see who is right in a few weeks, but I for one would not doubt Day’s ability to bring a great passing attack to an offense that can run the ball like they showed against Notre Dame.
