What does losing Friday mean for Notre Dame?

One of my good friends and roommate of a few years now is a big Notre Dame fan.  We were talking about what a loss in the Fiesta Bowl means for the state of their program.  In the past 30 years, ND is not among the top 25 winningest football programs.  They didn't win a BCS bowl, and the *biggest* victory he could remember was a regular season win over Oklahoma a couple years back.

Brian Kelly has lost more of the big time matchups than he has won at ND, and they can't seem to get it done too often against top programs.  I contested that a win Friday would be the biggest win of their program in our lives (we were both born in 1992) and after laughing at first, he came to a shocked realization that it really might be.

If ND doesn't get it done Friday vs our Buckeyes, is it time to as a college football community really reevaluate where they stand as a college football "blue blood?"  They are a program filled with history and tradition, but since a national title in 1988, have done nothing really worth noting aside from playing for (and getting smoked in) a national title.  Brian Kelly is completing his fourth season and has broke the 10 win threshold twice.  His record at ND would be looked at as failure at Ohio State.

What do you guys think?  Where does ND stand with a loss Friday, and how important is it for their program to notch a big time postseason win?
