Blues/rock guitarist Billy Gibbons is 66 today. He may look like an unshaven bum now but Gibbons had a privileged childhood, growing up in a well-to-do Houston suburb...and had a father who was an entertainer, conductor and concert pianist. Gibbons father sent him to New York to study with Tito Puente on percussion as a child, but he then picked up guitar at age 13. After high school he attended Warner Brothers Art School in Hollywood, where he formed his first major group, Moving Sidewalks, around 1966. It was also around this time that he befriended Jimi Hendrix, who on occasion called out Gibbons as an up and coming great US guitarist. It may be open to debate as to whether Gibbons ever achieved that lofty status but he did form the band ZZ Top in 1969 and helped lead them to mega-group status in the ‘80s, and they are still going today.
