Duke Loses to Something Called Mercer

By DJ Byrnes on March 21, 2014 at 2:30p

March Madness is back on the barby, mates; #3 Duke has lost to perennial power and #14 seed Mercer, 78-71.

The Bears were paced by senior forward Jakob Gallon with 20 points and five rebounds. His fellow senior frontcourt mate, Daniel Coursey, chipped in 17 points and four rebounds.

The great thing about this is that everyone can stop talking about our game against Dayton now.

Duke has some inexplicable losses the last decade in the tourney - Lehigh, VCU, Mercer.  And of course the title in 2010.

cronimi's picture

The VCU loss looks more and more explicable. They are a good team, and Shaka Smart is a great coach. But yeah, I agree with your general point.

Buckeye Chuck's picture

That's the key. The title buys you a lot of good will to get you past the upsets.

I think there's a definite link between the "relative" decline of Duke and the beginning of the one-and-done era. You know Coach K would prefer not to deal with the Irvings and the Parkers, but ignoring them isn't really an option either.

The same thing is true for upsets in general. I don't have stats to back it up, but it seems like we see more of this sort of thing. It has always happened, it just seems like it's more frequent now.

Ironically he won the title with seniors and juniors, not the one and dones (Irving, Parker, RIvers)

VCU is not SO bad lol...but Lehigh and Mercer, yeah...bad losses.  Amazing how that happens.  Duke plays teams like Mercer in non-conference play and wins by 20 or 30.

Oh Thank God.

This may seem petty but I feel much better now.  Misery loves company!

I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.

She was the first thing I saw.  Am I the only one that thinks she looks like Stephanie McMahon?  Like she just witnessed Coach K get a Pedigree?

LMAO, NO, I thought the same damn thing!  She looks like she witnessed her husband losing to Daniel Bryan, with the crowd around her chanting "YES!  YES!  YES!  YES!"

After OSU lost, I just wanted as much chaos as possible in the tournament, and so far it has not disappointed. I can't figure out how Duke either wins the national title or loses to a 14 seed or higher seemingly every year. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground with them.

...and Michigan still sucks.

This is so true. Feast or famine.

But Duke's a football school.

No...wait. I must've been thinking of someone else.

well, it's not popular but I'm a Duke fan.  love coach K.

and I envy all those National Title trophies he holds... I'm sure Thad wishes he had coach K's problems!

I wonder how much of these upsets have to do with mid-major schools that play together for four years vs a team of one and dones.  Duke has way more NBA talent on the floor than Mercer but in a tough game where you have to keep persevering and keep playing hard the team that has been there and hangs together (sometimes) triumphs.

Maybe UK will lose too (a team I love to hate).  Calipari - what a loser.

EvanstonBuckeye's picture

One thing I'll say about Coach K: his post-loss pressers are, generally, exceedingly classy. He talks X's and O's and how the other team deserved to win, all without trashing his team.

Jabari Parker, we hardly knew ya.

Ha... That girl in the picture has the same face I had when I realized Craft was going to take the last shot.

I hate to be that guy, BUT...while Duke's demise at the hand of yet another double-digit seed in the opening round of the NCAA tournament was certainly hilarious, this just made TTUN's life a bit easier.
