Auburn Hires Former Tennessee Coach Bruce Pearl

By DJ Byrnes on March 18, 2014 at 1:06p

Bruce Pearl, who has been out of the coaching game since being fired by Tennessee in 2011 for lying about the recruitment of Aaron Craft, has accepted the head coaching job at Auburn. From ESPN:

"I'm humbled and blessed to be back in the game that I love," Pearl said in a statement. "I don't know how long it will take, but it's time to rebuild the Auburn basketball program and bring it to a level of excellence so many of the other teams on campus enjoy."

Pearl is 231-99 on the Division I level. Auburn finished 14-16 (6-12 in SEC play) and fired their coach, Tony Barbee, last week.

231 and 911 record in D1? No way that's correct. Otherwise I think this is a great hire for Auburn

The interesting part of this is that his show-cause isn't officially up till August, which probably isn't going to be an issue. But I believe he's the only head coach with a show-cause who has been hired during/after it.

Auburn is not a good job for a basketball coach, though. He could've waited longer and probably gotten a better gig. They really don't have much basketball history outside of Charles Barkley, Chuck and Wesley Person and some good teams in the 80's. They've only been to the NCAA tourney 8 times in their history. So good luck Bruce. Hope you throw some really great BBQ's at Auburn.

On his old ESPN radio show Doug Gottlieb said that the two best in-game coaches in America are Thad Matta and Bruce Pearl. Definitely an improvement.

High and tight boo boo

I wonder if his contract will include a no BBQ clause.

You say that in jest but the thing a lot of people, mostly Tennessee fans, don't realize is that even after the guy was caught by the NCAA and lied about having the little Junior BBQ at his house with Aaron Craft, he and his staff continued to knowingly violate NCAA rules in recruiting. UT was actually gonna keep him as their coach, and had self-imposed a suspension and paycut and limited the time he would be allowed to recruit. But when the additional violations (and when they occurred) were brought to light, they felt they had no other choice but to let him go.

I was also taking into account, not just Pearl's past, but the SEC recruiting environment in general. Leave it to a wheeler-dealer school like Auburn to hire a wheeler-dealer coach.

He knows how to get clicks, I will say that...

knowing how to get clicks is just another way of saying he knows how to say stupid shit that makes people legitimately question his sanity

The SEC is an absolutely turrible basketball conference but with the backing of the 4letter pimp, they will not be that way for very long.

Let the recruiting violations begin.

Oh wait, that simply doesn't happen in the SEC.  Forgot.
