This is the same guy who said at the beginning of the 2010 season that Ohio State would be better and they would have a legitimate Heisman candidate if they featured Brandon Saine instead of TP.  Not too smart.

Is it Saturday Yet's picture

I'm going to boycott listening to the fan until they fire Hooley.

Pam's picture

Hooley will never be fired.  His readership and listening audience goes up higher and higher with every filthy rant he spews.  Let the station mgr. know why you are not going to listen anymore.  I did and got a nice note back.

Bobcat04's picture

I don't honestly know how he keeps a job in Columbus.  The man has always been a hater.

Hooley should move to Tennessee and become Herbstreit's pool boy.

This guy misleads his audience on a daily basis...

Buckeye born and bred. Buckeye til I'm dead.

Here is what is weird:  I have gone on the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer the last three years.  Hooley always goes along with Herbie. They do a College Football Live on the pool deck the last day of cruise when we are sailing back to Florida.  Both he and Herbie never say a negative word about Tressel, the program or the players.  Think about it, he is on a boat with 2500 buckeye fans sailing in open water.  If he said anything like he has the last few days, I swear he would have been thrown overboard.

Pam, this is a little off topic, but were the t-shirts for the Cruise well received? Just wondering becasue I was the one that printed them.

Thanks, Corey

Corey, I didn't go on this one, but did in 08,09,10.

He is just like Cowherd, stirs the post to get ratings and the discussion going. ABC6 had him on last night and showed him spewing venom towards Tressel. Jason is right, that haircut is straight from Footloose.

741's picture

The difference is that Cowherd doesn't pose as a journalist.

The_Lurker's picture

Hooley is a troll. Don't feed the troll. Roaring mouths mean ratings. Stations love guys like that because people will tune in just to seethe about him even more. Ignoring is the best solution.

All this from the flagship radio station of OSU sports that has the audacity to call itself the fan. OSU should take a good look at that contract after this matter is resolved.

Pamela –

Let me assure you – I do not endorse, or support Bruce’s comments.

Sports talk show hosts are paid to express their opinion.  But when your opinion become personal…..and venomous…..I think we’ve stepped over the line.

We will be addressing all of this with Bruce this morning…

Dave,

Thank you for reading my email and responding.  I don’t expect any changes in your programming, that is not why I wrote to you.  Mr. Hooley uses tOSU and Jim Tressel in the same way Beck and Limbaugh use the Democrats and President Obama, as tools for ratings which will go up the more outrageous the commentary becomes.  Mr. Beck and Mr. Limbaugh will never lose their jobs with Fox and I am sure Hooley has job security as well.  My response is not to listen to all three of them.  I am not just an alum or a fan.  My father was a Trustee for over 20 years.  Woody Hayes and my dad were friends and he was a guest in our home many times.  When dad died, Jack Nicklaus attended his funeral. I do campus recruiting here in NJ and VP of the NJ Buckeyes Alumni Association.  This is personal as I am sure it is for many fans and alum and we don’t appreciate a fellow alum publicly saying he is ashamed of the school we love so much.

Thank you again for responding.

Dear Mr. Van Stone,

Bruce Hooley’s comments towards Jim Tressel are despicable. I have always regarded him as some Howard Stern wannabe or a poor man’s Jim Rome and still listened on line from time to time, but even then it was more for Chris Spielman than Hooley.  No more.  As much as I respect and love Spiels, I have a hard time understanding his association with this hack who is either being encouraged by you or really is just a nasty SOB.  I don’t expect anyone to handle tOSU or Tress with kid gloves just because the station is in Cols., my home town and my alma mater.  What Hooley is doing is different.  He clearly has lost any shred of objectivity, is vindictive, defense when questioned and is factually wrong on many occasions.
But, I am sure he makes the phone lines light up with his vitriol and your bottom line increases with every rant.  It’s about the money.  It’s always about the money.  And that is exactly what Hooley is accusing Ohio St of: being all about the money.  What a hypocrite.

Pam, you are my hero.   Keep fighting the good fight.....

Except for live games, I stopped listening to this station a long time ago.  Hooley is just a typical knowitall sanctimonious journalist who couldn't keep a job writing with the decline of print media.

741's picture

I have actually enjoyed listening to 97.1 The Fan since the move to the FM dial for the most part... With the notable exception of Hooley. He does not belong in this market...

Make up your mind dude - either be a journalist, or be a polarizing (douchebag) radio personality. You can't try to be both and have a shred of integrity or true success at either.

TLB's picture

almost forgot........Nice work Pam.

Pam's picture

Thanks.  Never underestimate the power of a strongly worded note (my dad used to say that).

It seems Mr. Hooley did have to go the principals office today.  Word on the street is he apoligized for some of his comments, specifically comparing tOSU to SMU and that he "crossed the line"

"He went on to say that Tressel's actions angered him because of his love for Ohio State University, and feels like his degree is devalued by actions like that.  He went on to say that hadn't even realized how much he loved Ohio State until he felt that his alma mater is now looked on as a mere "football factory," as he wants to be an alumnus of a school that is curing cancer, improving crop yields, etc etc etc.  He is definitely personally affronted and insulted by anyone whose actions damage Ohio State"

I copied this from the Hineygate forum on Scout.  This guy listened to the show today.

I am a proud alum, as well as a football season ticket holder and booster. I am shocked and disappointed by what appears to have transpired within the football program - but that has nothing at all to do with my sense of pride in being a graduate of Ohio State University.

Are you kidding me?!

Pam's picture

My diploma hangs proudly in my office. If Ohio St. fotball never have won a single game it would still be one of my proudest acheivements.

I don't live in the bus anymore but Hooley always struck me as controversial for the sake of controversial. He does sometimes give good perspective but i say bring back Ian fitzsimmon. That dude was a blast to listen too.

Oh and I live in Atlanta, prety much the unofficial capital of the sec and I proudly rock the scarlet and gray and block o all the time. I love Tress and he's our coach hopefully until he's ready tonhang it up, but as much as I respect and am thankful for his hard work and achievement, Ohio state was, is and will always be bigger than any one man. We'll weather this storm and come out swinging.

I find it funny that people are shocked that a guy with a radio show would say outrageous things to garner a response.  Typcially, the douchebags who have shows on the airwaves have more listenning.  If they are controversal, whether it's pro the local team or not they get huge ratings.  So, everyone on here who tunes in to see what he says next, and then proceeds to get pissed and comment about it are doing exactly what he wants.

Want to hit the guy where it hurts, quite listening.  Also, don't write the radio station.  They love the negative mail, they know you are listening.  Write the sponsors.  Tell them you can no longer support the show because the man is offensive and for that reason you can also no long use their product or service for their affiliation with the man and his show.  If you get enough people to contact the sponsors, then and only then is the mans job in jeopardy.  Otherwise you are just making him that much more  powerful.
