Jim Tressel Still Has Interest in the NFL

Jim Tressel during his time with the Indianapolis coach.

Jim Tressel was reportedly set to interview for the Cleveland Browns vacancy and then he wasn't. This doesn't mean Jim Tressel isn't interested in another stint in the pros. Today he joined 97.1's Bishop and Rothman show:

Tressel later stated he's content at the University of Akron, but still feels the itch every fall.

We don't want to impose on Ohio State's national title winning-former coach, but he's aware Ohio State has an open assistant coach/co-defensive coordinator position, right!?

I dont think he can be DC yet due to the show cause prohibition.
Wish he could.

...just thinking about all the OSU coaches in college (some kicking our ass) that if we could pay them all one salary, the coaching staff we would have....  LOL

Go Bucks!

Go Bucks!

From what I've heard, the Show-Cause doesn't matter much. Tressel has been a model citizen and the NCAA recognizes it.

703 is spot on. Although nothing has come out publicly from the NCAA, sources have said they are nothing but pleased with his actions since the punishment and would not stand in the way of a university hiring him.

Show-cause doesn't mean he CAN'T be hired....

Just means it's difficult.

tennbuckeye19's picture

And if hired, he'd have to "sit out" the first 5 games of the season and he has to miss the championship game and bowl game.

jeremytwoface's picture

Wonder if they would consider his punishment from the Colts enough?

OSU could still go in front of the NCAA and petition to not have the penalties I think...

I don't have a passionate rooting interest in the NFL but if Tress got the Browns gig, I would join their fan club on the spot.  We all know that he would win - makes you wonder why NFL teams think he wouldn't...

JozyMozy's picture

We HOPE that he would win, you mean. It's the NFL. For every Pete Carroll(round 2), there's a Butch Davis.
I love Tress, and would love nothing more to see him continue to bring glory to the state of Ohio, but nothing is a given in the NFL. Well, except certain teams losing in the wildcard every mother**#&@( ! year. :c

tennbuckeye19's picture

Sadly though, Butch Davis has been the best coach of the "new" Browns since their return in 99.

SavannahBuck's picture

College coaches going to the NFL doesn't work out more times than not, but what Tressel preaches absolutely works in the NFL. He wants a good defense, special teams, and not turn the ball over...last I checked, when the Steelers were at their best, recently, they pounded the ball down your throat, played great defense, and had good kickers that could make field goals and flip the field when needed. I think he would do well in the NFL, and would be ecstatic if the Browns hired him. We all know that won't happen though. It's the Browns, an organization devoid of good decision making

andretolstoy's picture

If Jay Gruden can get a head coaching gig, James Patick Tressel should be a shoe in.

tennbuckeye19's picture

Yeah, but Jay Gruden's brother is the best coach that has ever coached in the history of football.

Oyster's picture

He is the best coach to ever inherit a team that is already primed to win a Super Bowl.  Just add water.

tennbuckeye19's picture

Interestingly though, the team that Gruden won the Super Bowl with played it against his former team that Bill Callahan inherited from him.

chemicalwaste's picture

The reasons he won are in your post. It was his team,so he knew it inside and out, plus it was Bill Callahan on the other sideline. "I like this Gruden guy though." in Gruden's voice

Since no one wants to coach the Browns... why not?

The offseason begins when your season ends. Even then there are no days off.

That's the problem, even JT won't touch that with a 10 foot poll, and he has the itch to get back in the game.

NoVA Buckeye's picture

He said he would be interested in coaching the Browns
Problem is, they haven't called.

Because they will just get rid of you in a year when you don't win enough games.

May be JT and T. Dungy are going in as a combo? D - Lions? Plus, Spielman.
Ohhhh brother.

WC Buckeye's picture

That combo should give anyone shivers.

The only thing that's new in the world is the history that we have forgotten.

Bucksnation's picture

The NFL has been playing Tresselball longer than Tressel himself.  For anyone who says he's too conservative on offense - be reminded of the one time he had a good passing QB (Troy Smith) and how he opened up the offense.  No disrespect Krenzel, McMullen, Zwick or Tpeezy.

yrro's picture

The offense under Junior TP wasn't exactly bad, either. They were pretty highly ranked in efficiency.

Jonnferrell's picture

It would be great to see what he could do in Cleveland.  His dad was at BW forever and that makes him a hometown boy. I don't know why the Browns don't consider him.   Well--yeah, they are the Browns front office--not known for great management.

The last thing I want to see is for Jim Tressel to be hired by the Browns, draft a QB that they're going to trade away, along with Josh Gordon and Joe Haden before the season really starts, then fire Tress at the end of the first year.
I hope JT can find greener pastures than that river fire up there.

sbentz4's picture

I have a hard time believing that, then again Mike Lombardi.

Bucksfan's picture

Have a hard time believing what?  That all just happened over the last 4 months, lol.

northcampus's picture

Even though Tressel has been a model citizen and the 'show cause' stipulation may not be enforced if he took a job, it makes me sick to my stomach to see that stupid phrase brought up every time there is a coaching opening while Bobby Petrino jumps right in with no repercussions.

Jonnferrell's picture

Yeah, that makes perfect sense, eh?

1-JT coaches our "D" (and not a co). Best case scenario.
2-JT, Head coach NFL....Browns I hope.
3-Heads to Sparty and pal Coach Dino, and coaches their "D". They also are in need of a "D" coach.
Please be 1 or 2, If it is 3 we are in trouble. Pray.

causeicouldntgo43's picture

Only problem is that Tress' specialty/area of expertise is O, not D, so not likley to be anyone's D coordinator. Head Coach? Hell yes.

jbirmmd's picture

Would love to see him as the Bengals OC!  Dalton needs a bit of JT tutorship!

JozyMozy's picture

Hue Jackson, while no Jim Tressel, shares lots of offensive tendencies with our Senator. Power running like whoa. Biggest difference is that Hue is more about tough love (oodles of critiscism), whereas Tress is more about positive reinforcement and focus on improvement.
Personally, at this stage in his life, I feel that Jim Tressel is better than an NFL Coordinator job. HC or bust.

TNbuckeye91's picture

I'd like him to come down to Tennessee and coach the titans. They fired Munchack completely unfairly. i think JT would be excellent.

If the Browns hire him, I believe they would automatically gain thousands of fans from central Ohio :P.

buckeyerose's picture

Have no fear, the Browns are not smart enough to hire JT.  The Stooges running that show are....  fill in the blank ....    Actually the real 3 stooges would do a better job of this.
Josh McDaniels took himself out of the mix..........O.M.G.  Now they're interviewing last years rejects.  LMAO Cleveland has now become even more toxic.
I would love to see JT coaching somewhere soon I just don't think it will be in Cleveland and not in *ichigan.

Just win!

jbirmmd's picture

Being a (long suffering) Bengals fan, it would be a devastating blow to me to see the Browns hire JT.
1)  It would make me have a harder time hating them.
2)  They might actually get good.
