RIP Evan Spencer's Media Availability

Yesterday, even after it was revealed Evan Spencer had bracketed his opinion with notes on his obvious bias, he created a stir when he mentioned he thought Ohio State would "wipe the floor" with Alabama and another foe (assumed to be FSU) that was left unclarified. Today, Urban brought the hammer down:

We hardly knew ye, Evan Spencer.

Note: Evan Spencer died on his way back to his home planet.

Scarlet_Lutefisk's picture

His plane... was shot down... over the Sea of Japan.
It spun in.
There were no survivors.

MASH?

Yep...and Family Guy for our younger members.

Abyssinia, Evan!

Nice.

Wow. this is gold right here, I completely forgot about Poochie

Evan's probably scrubbing the floor of the WHAC with a toothbrush right now

I_Run_The_Dave's picture

He's probably got a toothbrush in each hand.  One with an Alabama logo, and the other with Florida State.

So are we wiping the field or the floor or both

AndyVance's picture

Meh, calm down Coach. I'm all in favor of running a tight ship, but c'mon man. It wasn't really what I'd call disrespect so much as a young kid fired up about how much he believes in his team. Nothing wrong with that.
That said, I suppose I'd rather have Woody Hayes-type discipline than a team running amok, so maybe this is the right move after all. Damn you, Twitter.

jeremytwoface's picture

Waaaaaay overblown.

The first man gets the ((((Oyster)))), the second man gets the shell.

Jason Priestas's picture

I said as much on Twitter, but bulletin board material is very important to how Urban Meyer runs his team. Here's a passage from Urban's Way, which is a great read if you haven't read it.

idontsmellgood's picture

This year he could just use real clippings from Herby.

"This kid scares me a little bit because I've seen him on film drop back and ...boom, boom, boom." Tuberville moved his head, mimicking Barrett checking through his progressions. "That scares me right now. Has all week."-Tuberville on JT Barrett

And this, my friends, is why we will beat Bama or FSU or whoever we meet, if we can finish undefeated and make the BCS championship game.

"Half of it was real and half of it was made up.  And the half that was made up I signed 'Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN'

So THIS is why Herbie feels he has to come off as such a non-OSU homer!

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

Meh. Similar to the De'Anthony Thomas "we can score 40" story, this was overblown.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

theDuke's picture

I, for one, kind of like it.  He just reiterating the belief he has in himself and his team.  He even prefaced it with "I'm a little biased but..." I mean c'mon! You dont' think FSU or 'Bama players are saying the same thing? I'll take all the attention the media can give us. We're on the outside looking in right now, having other people thinking about what Evan Spencer said is way better than having them think about their (read: FSU & Bama) next opponent. I also think it was perfect timing. Now lets just go blow a hole through the earths crust in champaign, illinois.

Totally Agree! At least it got some in the Natl media to actually talk about what could happen if we did match-up with Bama or FSU.... Up until this time, it sure seemed like they had been doing everything in their power to avoid that topic seemingly under any circumstance/scenario!

Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory lasts forever!

andyb's picture

This is a perfect example of what Urban tells the media....and what he tells Evan behind closed doors.

I guarantee you he gave him a playful ribbing about what he said and nothing more....Then he goes out and says what he is required to say to keep up social norms.

ChazBuckeye's picture

Not to mention what Jason referenced, but it also gives teams more motivation to beat us. Which as we all know, they already have.

Some people think we’re the hunted.I don’t feel that way at all. We’re the hunter.Everybody wants an angry football team.Everybody wants a team on edge and a hungry team.If you’re a hunter, that usually equates to being hungry.

Jason Priestas's picture

Yeah, I mean, I don't have a problem with Spencer or anyone on the team thinking they can beat Alabama, Stanford, Florida State, Oregon, Baylor or anyone else, but pick from a million other phrases besides "wipe the field."

Why give them anything?

Jeeves's picture

Evan Spencer needs help in completing his idiom. I think perhaps "rake the field" would be appropriate as the opposition is used as a tool to tidy up the playing surface making way for many Buckeye touchdowns. "Plow the field" has become an unfortunate euphemism and so must be discarded as a candidate. "Squeegee the field" would be my choice if the Buckeyes were playing on field turf. How about "slash and burn the field"? A rather pictorial description that recalls a certain Ohioan's march to the ocean by way of the southeast.

ChazBuckeye's picture

Indeed...it's not necessary to give those teams anymore fuel.  Couldn't agree more.

Some people think we’re the hunted.I don’t feel that way at all. We’re the hunter.Everybody wants an angry football team.Everybody wants a team on edge and a hungry team.If you’re a hunter, that usually equates to being hungry.

Apparently this is still ESPN front page material...
Edit: They just took it down.
Edit Again: A brand new article about it is on the front pace.

Not going to be losing any sleep over Spencer-Gate, and I sure hope he doesn't.  He did nothing wrong IMHO.

He's a kid, simple mistake. Face consequences (wrath of UFM), move on.

It's not like he started an anti-OSU movement in the world of the FBS and related media.

BassDropper's picture

Not sure if anyone else noticed this, but ESPN is trying their hardest to make sure this story doesnt die. They made this same tweet twice (something I have never seen them do) look at the time stamp on both of the tweets.

Not exactly the same.  One says FIELD the other FLOOR.  They cannot deny they made one up!

...and the less accurate quote is actually the one sent a day later (if it were the other way around they could at least say it was a correction).

buckeyepastor's picture

I'm fine with Meyer's decision.  For one, he's made it abundantly clear to the universe that you buy into his way of doing things or there are consequences.   Spencer should have known better.  Second, 90% of the players aren't really that interesting to listen to, anyways, and Spencer's comment doesn't make him a great interview.   Third, it was disrespecting those teams.  To say that OSU can compete with them or has the players to beat them is a guy proud of himself and teammates.   Saying that we'd "wipe the floor" with them is the definition of bulletin board material, and it makes OSU an easy target for scoffing and ridicule at a time in the year where perception is everything.

"Woody would have wanted it that way"

Latest NEWS UPDATE:
Evan Spencer just tweeted: Well damn, I guess we'll just have to back that shit up now, then, won't we. #DealWitIt #OSU74Bama0

BassDropper's picture

Why isnt ESPN playing the video of Spencer's comments, instead of taking a portion of his quote just to make it sound worse than what it was. Last week I saw the D'Anthony Thomas video probably 20 times on ESPN last week. The reason they arent showing the Spencer video is because people will see through what they are trying to do.

DIRECTIONER

Maestro's picture

Pretty sad that even the next day they are misrepresenting it by including FSU.  Not to mention the lack of showing the video.
