LeBron James runs deep with Ohio State.

Here's a tentative list of recruits expected to be in attendance; this is a total power move by Urban.

this is 100% awesome; the only thing that makes it 110% awesomer is to have Urban & Thad's face on there, but well done nonetheless

Being from Cleveland and having a bitter taste about him, Personally THEosu is doing a brilliant job pulling about all the cards for recruiting. The Cavs fan in me is still bitter but the buckeyes fan in me is feels like doing the truffle shuffle

Awesome news.  Brilliant.  I hope he's going to continue doing stuff for tOSU as time allows.  He may well be the world's greatest living athlete and recruits -- whether they're football players or hoopsters -- will be mightily impressed.  Just imagine LeBron taking Elbert Robinson aside and suggesting he become a Buckeye.

Remain calm.  It's only a game.

buckeyeEddie27's picture

The players will absolutely feed off his energy, I hope he is HYPED on the sideline.   Seeing that on ABC in primetime will be so huge for national recruiting.   LBJ going Ape Shit after touchdowns? Yes please!

I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.

Part of me still hates LeBron, but I'm pretty much over it....all the love he's thrown towards the Buckeyes has turned me in recent years. Not to mention the donations to his high school (VASJ) and kids in general.
This is a great idea and good for OSU recruiting.
Can't believe I'm going to type this: THANKS LEBRON

As a proud alumnus of that high school I have to point out that it's St. Vincent-St. Mary, not VASJ.

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

BuckeyeQ6's picture

For the first time, I echo your sentiment.  The way he left Cleveland was awful, but seeing his love for OSU, I think I can now root for him as a person and Buckeye fan (though I still don't like the Heat!).
Plus, the Buckeyes love him.  I was fortunate enough to end up watching game 6 of the NBA finals at BW3s on 5th when Carlos Hyde, Jordan Hall, Kenny G, Braxton Miller, Chris Fields, and Adam Griffin walked in and sat one table over.  It seemed like over half the team was there (it was pretty cool).  They were all cheering for the Heat and getting pretty annoyed at the rest of the place who were cheering for the Spurs.  That's another good reason to forgive him and move on.

Fear The Elf's picture

He doesn't love OSU. OSU offers him a chance to rehab his image. It's a smart business decision, but to believe it is anything other than that is naive.

Poison nuts's picture

Man - I thought he may just be doing a good thing & taking in a game from the sideline, but obviously you seem to be privy to the truth, while I almost made the mistake of being a naive rube. Thanks for showing me the error of my ways.

Can I dislike Nick Saban? He never did anything to me, but I really want to dislike him. Please allow me to do so.

It's not me that you need to worry about. I didn't downvote ANY of your comments. You should probably start by asking all of the folks who did. You might want to get an early start, as they appear to be quite numerous.

Elf you are totally wrong on this. I am by no means have a lovefest for Lebron, but he is a true Buckeye. He bleeds scarlet and gray. I was at the 2009 USC night game where he was in attendence with his enterouge. I also saw him in person at the OSU vs DUke home game where he was in attendance as well. Sure he might be seeking some pub, but OSU is using him for recruting as well. Win win for both sides. He Loves the Bucks. He has been quoted saying many times had he not gone straight to the NBA he would have gone to OSU and played for Thad Matta and the Buckeyes. Stop the hate already. :(

THE URBANATOR AND HIS BOYS' JOURNEY HAS JUST BEGUN; 26-0 IS COMING BABY!!

Brutus's picture

I hated the way Lebron left Cleveland, but I've never hated him.  He seems like a class guy.  That he's a Buckeye makes him all the easier to like.

Brutus' Left Nut's picture

It was really a miscalculation on his part.  I don't hate his intention in leaving that way just the result.  Sure he pissed of Cavs fans, but he also raised a bunch money for kids (boys and girls club) in the process.  Are we so self righteous that we are mad at a guy for leaving in free agency in a way that raised money for underprivileged kids?  I guess I'd rather him do that then what other free agents do.  They still leave the team high and dry but at least LBJ helped kids.

EvanstonBuckeye's picture

In case anybody's keeping track, I just clicked on Brutus's avatar for the 9,000th time. On to Captain Obvious.

Brutus's picture

Really? A gray 11W does it for you, huh? Well, to each his own I guess.  I hate to see what other internet shit you're into.

d1145fresh's picture

Another great aspect of this is that ABC/ESPN will show him probably no fewer than 50 times throughout the game and I imagine he will be decked out wearing OSU garb. Kids that aren't there but watching on TV will start to think more about OSU and the connections they have to athletes.

nm_buck's picture

Hopefully he'll be sporting the scarlet and red.

BuckeyeChief's picture

Mixed bag for me, hate the way he left, will NEVER root for him to win anything, but I recognize he will probably end up as the GOAT when it is all said and done. I don't want Cleveland to jump on his bandwagon when he declares for free agency though. Let him go elsewhere (and not to the Knicks).

"Clutch has no boundaries"

Knarcisi's picture

Come on.  If he wanted to come back to Cleveland to bring a major championship to a city that hasn't had one in over 50 years, you should welcome that with open arms.

Fear The Elf's picture

I hate this argument. I've been a Cleveland sports fan for 20+ years. If all I was interested in was winning titles, I would've switched allegiances long ago. I don't want him on the Cavs again. Ever.

Knarcisi's picture

The way the guy did it was wrong, but you can't blame him for wanting to go win.  Antoine Jamison and Verajo around him?  What a joke.  He's an Ohio guy and remembers his roots.  It would probably be an honor to come back and win one for the city.  People shouldn;t be so self righteous to not welcome it.

Fear The Elf's picture

I don't think you follow the Cavs or the NBA that closely. Gonna say agree to disagree.

Fear The Elf's picture

BTW - He's a Yankees fan and Cowboys fan, and grew up a Bulls fan, UNC and Florida St fan. He's never been an Ohio guy.

Knarcisi's picture

He is a Buckeye fan, so not sure what you are talking about.  Plus, who cares who he is a fan of?  He gives back ... that's where it counts.

osupolo's picture

When he was still with the Caves he was a guest on Game Day when it was at the Shoe. He was a Buckeye fan then, and he has said he was several times.

Great recruiting move for football and basketball alike.

BSTP DeCon's picture

Never been an Ohio guy yet the man has said numerous times that if he would've went to college after High School, it would've been to Ohio State...

BuckeyeChief's picture

Not dropping any downvotes for a peaceful disagreement; if he helps recruiting, great. He will do 1,000,000% more than I ever could. I will just never pull for him. (It sucks too, he does have some awesome kicks, but I won't wear them).
FWIW, I am also a huge Knicks fan and I am not a fan of how Melo left Denver either.

"Clutch has no boundaries"

Fear The Elf's picture

He would have gone to Akron. It is good for his image to say he would have gone to OSU, but he would've followed Dru Joyce to Akron....same way he followed him to SVSM.

BSTP DeCon's picture

How could that effect his image? The man is easily considered one of the best basketball players in the world today, no way would be care about building his reputation with, "I would've went to Akron." Should've, would've, could've game.

pcuzz1's picture

THANK YOU!!! LOYALTY! I would never, ever accept him back on the team. I want players who want to win here. not go take the easy way out with two other superstars then come back here once he has won and see the cavs have a plethora of young talent

Die hard Cleveland fan, but this is a fantastic move. Gives us a lot of "cred" with the younger crowd. That and some new fancy jerseys, and we are the flyest team on the block. Yeah I know we might think it's lame, but 16 and 17 year olds won't think that's lame. Urban knows recruiting is the lifeblood of a program.

I hate that he left because I love Cleveland sports but I don't blame him one bit and I would welcome him back next year with open arms. Fact of the matter is that the Cavs were unable to put anyone around him (he took Larry Hughes, Z, Drew Gooden and Sasha Pavlovic to the finals! half those guys wouldn't have even been bench players for other teams). That being said, he has chosen to support Ohio State and people need to put their distaste for him aside because he will help both the football program and basketball program.

buckeyebobcat

Bolt's picture

To be fair, I think I could've taken that Cavs team to the Finals and gotten swept that year. The Eastern Conference was beyond a total joke at that point. Regardless, I don't have to put my distaste for him aside...but I can just keep my mouth shut and acknowledge that having the best athlete on the planet (in any sport) hanging around your school's locker room and sideline is a good thing. While I don't want him back (I'd rather try and build something without him) it's not like I'd be brooding over it. I'd have to justify it to myself as him being a hired hand to help Kyrie win Cleveland a title lol. I think all that talk is frivolous anyway...I just don't see him coming back.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

The Eastern Conference was beyond a total joke at that point.

King James!!!  Always have liked him.  Always will.  3peat with Oden this year!  Love when he attends tOSU games.  Needs to bring his boy DWade along as well.  Couldn't hurt having the best and another top 5 player in the NBA talking to potential recruits.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

Wade still top 5? Hahaha....no.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

mh277907's picture

He's not a top 5 player anymore but you could definitely argue he is still in the top 5 in terms of popularity. I REALLY don't like D Wade but the kids these days do and it couldn't hurt to have them both around.

buckeyebobcat

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

When it comes to flopping, and whining, Wade is definitely top 5.

kareemabduljacobb's picture

Sounds like you're describing Dan Gilbert ha.  Along with the other person talking about LBJ not keeping his promises... I thought Gilbert said the Cavs would win a ring before the self-titled 'King' would? haha.  Danny is silly.  I used to love the Cavs, now can't stand them..because of him.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

No, it pretty much describes Wade perfectly.

Flop. No call? Throw tantrum. Flop. No call? Shove or kick player. XD

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

kareemabduljacobb's picture

Well if you look at it like the LBJ haters used to when he had no rings... for instance, if it wasn't just about hate and by their logic DWade> Durant. 3 rings to 0. I think he's still top 5. We'll see this upcoming season when he's healthy again.

TheBadOwl's picture

Let's see here...

  1. Lebron
  2. KD
  3. CP3
  4. D-Rose (Assuming he comes back in his old form. Which he won't. So this is invalid.)
  5. DH12 (when healthy and not being a bitch)
  6. Westbrook (when healthy)
  7. Kyrie (Not a homer pick, since I'm not a Cleveland fan. He'll be this good at the end of the year.)
  8. Harden
  9. Griffin
  10. Kobe (when healthy)
  11. D-Wade
  12. Kevin Love (when healthy)
  13. Steph Curry
  14. Tony Parker
  15. Bosh

Notice that, after the first three, there are huge injury concerns with all of these guys? I have D-Wade ranked 11th, but he battled injuries all year last year.
When you get past the top 3, you can't really definitively say that any of these guys deserve bona fide top-5 status. You can't tell me that D-Wade is absolutely not a top-5 player. Everyone who could lay claim to the 4th or 5th spot has some kind of injury concern, or hasn't been consistent enough to lock one of those spots down.
I didn't even put Deron Williams on that list. Or Garnett. Or a handful of others who could claim top 15 status. But if we're being completely honest, D-Wade might have more of a case to claim top-5 status than any of those guys.
So, I think it's fair to say that he's a top 5 player. You can't really argue against it, even though I have him at 11.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

As much as I've never cared for Lebron, I can appreciate what he does. By all accounts, he's a pretty good role model for the kids that look up to him. Just like Kobe before him, he's grown up in front of our eyes. The fact that he supports the good guys never hurts.

kareemabduljacobb's picture

Ehhh, Kobe?  LeBron never raped a fat chick in Colorado.

brandonbauer87's picture

True, but Kobe grew into a pretty good dude through the years. When you have the lifestyle that these guys do, growing up is rare. Usually reality doesn't hit until they retire.

kareemabduljacobb's picture

Yeah with the exception of that incident Kobe is pretty much MIA from the public and all the bad stuff and trouble a lot of these athletes get themselves into.

Is it too late to get Jahlil Okafor and Myles Turner to visit this weekend? I would be trying my hardest to get every recruit I could think of down to the Shoe to see Lebron. Does Bragg hold any animosity towards LBJ for leaving Cleveland the way he did?

Squirrel Master's picture

I was going to so say this. Get Okafor and Turner on the plane NOW! I still don't see why we can't also take the PG with Okafor. Russell is and will be a contributor at PG but we still can use a true point with Craft gone and only Shannon Scott being a true PG.

Everybody that "hates" Lebron get over yourselves already. He made a "business decision" to advance his career, just like any of us would do to advance our careers. If he runs into them on the sidelines or in the stands, sure.  He isn't a former player or hired gun, just a fan of the team.  OSU can't ask him to text players, contact them on behalf of the coaches or publicly encourage them to go to OSU (twitter, FB, press conferences etc.) but mingling with them at a game is not a problem.

Um. At this point I would think he would be classified as a Booster.

HandsOfSweed's picture

IDK. Don't boosters have to contribute cash to the booster's club or athletic dep't for that to be the case? I honestly don't know the rules on that. If so, would OSU just NOT take money from him so he could avoid the official "booster" label, thus allowing him to "recruit" in ways that official boosters cannot? If so, that would be awesomely legal, evil and brilliant all rolled into one.

But again, I sure as hell don't claim to know how this works (which actually makes me qualified to work for the NCAA regulations dep't, yes?)  ;)

AndyVance's picture

Snoop Dog and Will Farrell are both famous USC fans, and known to stalk the sidelines (well, at least back in the day when the Trojans weren't one big dumpster fire).
Matthew McConaughey is a frequent attendee at Texas Longhorn athletic events (as would be the Money Badger, but I digress). And apparently, Don Draper did a commercial for Mizzou.
Larry the Cable Guy is a notable Nebraska alum and booster (yes, you read that right), and likewise Toby Keith for the Oklahoma Sooners.
In other words, it doesn't look like the NCAA has put the smack down on famous people roaming the stadiums and arenas on game day, but if they'll find a problem with it, it'll probably be at Ohio State.

cinserious's picture

Superstar head coach Urban Meyer has been known to frequent Ohio State games as well.

I  just looked up booster rules on the net (note: I used St. Augustine College and yes, this was a google so I'm just trusting it's correct)
#3 rule for you are a booster is:
If you have ever been asked by an athletic department to help recruit.
#5 is: If you have actively participated in promoting the university athletics in any way
so I have to think Lebron is a booster.  But I do know that the NCAA infraction committee is nit-picky when they want one day yet tomorrow they have their Stevie Wonder glasses on.  I believe my rant on that is still active in the blog.

I don't know why you got a downvote for this ILLICH, because this is a legitimate question. As a matter of fact, I was wondering the same thing.
I think it's cool as hell that LeBron is going to be there, but I just hope that it doesn't become a distraction for the OSU footballers. I also wonder if LeBron is allowed to be fraternizing with OSU recruits?

P.S. The douche move wasn't leaving Cleveland, it was doing the Decision. Players can go wherever they want, however the GOAT (Jordan) faxed in his contract re-upping with the Bulls. Durant did similar.

I respect LeBron's decision to leave, but I don't respect the way he did it (and for all who want to point out the charities that were helped, LeBron could have easily just cut them a check).  He will never sit 100% right with me.
That being said, he is a Buckeye fan, and he has every right to be at the game and on the sideline.  If it helps the football team win, and if it helps recruiting for basketball, then it's good that he's there.

I agree. I think The Decision special was unnecessary, but I'm betting he thinks that now too and would probably pass on it if he had a do-over. And to be fair, I think it would be hard not to let it get to your head when you're 24 or 25 and have been the best player in the NBA for a few years, and have been talked about as the best player since Jordan.

And that it's NOT The University of Ohio State. Ooooops. That was someone else.

Find me another University on this entire planet with a better 1-2 punch as far as coaches for their 2 major programs (football - basketball) that not only win, but excel at it and also excel in recruiting like no other ..... I dare you.

Don't count out the vaunted University of Phoenix just because it is an online university.  Their team just got a commitment from an elusive RB that would juke Manti Teo out of his socks.
The only issue is that their basketball team is having trouble in head to head recruiting battles with Kentucky because at Kentucky the players could physically show up to less classes and still play.

You think Brent Mussberger gives LeBron the Katherine Webb treatment during the game?

teddyballgame's picture

the katherine webb treatment....hmm yes, I'm sure Lebron would be interested in receiving some of that.

"Yeah, now all you Akron boys that wanna grow up and be champions, you go to Miami, ya hear?  Sorry, sorry.  So sorry.  Had to do it.  It was there.

buckeyedude's picture

Aren't you the guy that gets all bent out of shape if anyone says anything remotely derogatory about the fine city of Cincinnati? Or was that someone else? I believe there was a whole thread of arguing around about the time of the Spring Game if I'm not mistaken.

Knarcisi's picture

I've made some unpopular comments on here, but that was not me.  I'm joking with this one. Everyone needs to lighten up. I grew up in Eastern OH a few hours from both Cleveland and Cincinnati. A lifetime Browns survivalist. I just get a kick out of these butt hurt jokers that say that they wouldn't take Lebron back.

Knarcisi's picture

And I lived in Cincinnati for 5 years and get the criticism. You wouldn't think it's OH when it comes to sports. OSU falls behind UC, not to mention UK and IU.

GoBucksToledo's picture

I like the sound of that too

If the Bucks are down at halftime, does LeBron switch hats?

The postgame show is brought to you by... Christ, I can't find it. The hell with it...

I am more worried about Braxton quitting halfway through the game and then transferring to Miami.

LeBron?  The guy who loves Ohio?  No thanks.  Stay home u traitor!!

TheBadOwl's picture

You'd seriously pass up a chance to go to a much better team, in MIAMI, when you're 25 years old, with incomprehensible amounts of money, and play with two of your best friends?

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

kareemabduljacobb's picture

Traitor?  Basketball is his JOB.   He sought out a better opportunity, which most people do.  LBJ doesn't sit here and tell you where you can or can't work.  Just because he's from Ohio, doesn't mean he's got to stick with the Cavs his whole career when his main objective is to win.  And let's be real, no one wants to play in Cle which is why his best supporting cast were either nobodies or old/washed up players.
I don't get why people hold this grudge towards him other than their own selfish reasons.  He already gives back to the communities/cities in Ohio, which I think is more important than a lot of you simply wanting him to play basketball for your favorite team.

pcuzz1's picture

I'll try to give my reasoning for my grudge... When you make a promise as he did, hold it. Also, I don't like him going on national T.V to take an hour and finish it by bashing his hometown.

I'm psyched! This is great news for OSU, regardless your opinions of Lebron.
I just hope he's wearing both Scarlet & Red!

Imagine James, Oden, Conley, Cook, and Lighty in the same lineup, if he were a Buckeye and would've stayed 4 years.

I'm just happy to be here

johnblairgobucks's picture

I like to imagine him playing 2 sports at OSU, honing his all-state wr skills and having Troy Smith tossing the ball to Holmes, Ginn, Gonzales, and "The King", while handing off to Pittman or Beannie.
Either way, Florida would have went 0-2 in 2006, against OSU in the 'Ship games.

I think it's a great move to have Lebron there.  He's a superstar so it will be a positive influence for him to be supporting OSU.

Michigan brings in Marshall Mathers for star power during their ABC prime time game and OSU brings in Lebron for theirs.  Whether you love James or hate him, he's the most influential athlete of this era by a mile in the eyes of teenage athletes.

By a mile? No. Depends how on when you think his "era' started.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

I'd say by about 8 miles.

You're forgetting that Mich had Tom Brady give a motivational speech to their players.
obviously it doesn't seem to be working all that well, but I'm just sayin...

Idaho Helga's picture

Did Brady's speech start with "It's ok, I remember getting boo'd in the big house lots of times" (true)

pcuzz1's picture

I hate lebron and never will like him. dude is a traitor, and it really irritates me the love he gets from the osu staff. he does not deserve it at all? however, swallowing my pride I realize how much this will help in recruiting, so if we can use lechoke for that then whatever. Hopefully he doesn't touch on how to finish games in his speech.. don't want any bad habits being picked up.

I don't blame the staff one bit. He's a necessary evil in OSU's book.

I do get kicks out of the espn fanboys who think he bleeds scarlet and gray. OSU is a big name right now. If OSU hoops/fball went down the tubes, you wouldn't hear an OSU related peep from him. I guess they forgot this game.
