Report: Greg Paulus to be Promoted

By Jordan Wagner on June 12, 2013 at 8:57p
Greg Paulus is rising quickly

When Chris Jent's departure was announced, many expected that Ohio State Video Coordinator, Greg Paulus, would be in line for the promotion to assistant coach. ESPN's Jeff Goodman is now reporting that it appears to be a done deal to happen:

The 26 year old Paulus will now be an assistant coach on college basketball's biggest stage just a few years after trying to start a football career at Syracuse.

Paulus has previously been an assistant at Navy for one season before joining Ohio State's staff in 2011 as Video Coordinator. His name was tied to assistant coaching jobs at Northwestern and Toledo this offseason. Paulus turned down a job offer to join the basketball staff at Toledo in hopes that he would be in line for a promotion if one of the Buckeyes' assistant coaches left.

Thad Matta will now begin his search for a Video Coordinator to replace Paulus.

Like the move. I think Paulus will be a head coach one day.

What are the chances of getting Dennis Hopson on staff? Buckeye blood still runs through those veins, right? Bringing back great players of yesteryear is a good thing (see Vrabel, Mike).

I would love to see Hopson join the staff (along with some other Buckeyes that are close to my heart). A staff can only have 3 assistants though and with Paulus being promoted, the only available position would be Video Coordinator, which is kind of entry level and I'm not sure he'd want. Of course as with Paulus, there is the chance to be promoted within a couple seasons or so. Not to mention assistants Jeff Boals and Dave Dickerson could get head coaching jobs in the near future, so there could be other opportunities soon.

Re: having only three assistants, I'll quote Johnny Carson: "I did not know that."
Thanks for knowing stuff, mi amigo!

I know Dennis was interested in the assistant coaching spot. Is returning to Ohio State to be a Video Coordinator a step up from an assistant at BGSU? I don't know.

That's interesting in and of itself - if Hopson was interested in the job, was he "passed over" out of loyalty to a current staff member, or is an assistant coaching position at BG viewed as less impressive on the resume as being video coordinator at a big-name program like Ohio State, or, did Matta not think that Hop had the chops for the job yet?
Very interesting...

I think Thad realizes that Greg Paulus would have been a hot commodity next offseason. Paulus is an up and coming assistant and Thad didn't want to lose him. I think it has less to do with Hopson and more to do with Greg.

That explanation makes the most sense, certainly.

I admit I used to really dislike Palus when he was a "Dukie Baby!", but when he became a Buckeye, all was forgiven. Of course there was a certain guy who coached at a certain school in the Sunshine State that completely handed it to Ohio State in a national championship game that I also used to despise, but then he became a Buckeye and all was forgiven.

Couldnt stand him when he was at Duke. Didnt like him at Cuse. One of my favorite now he's a Buckeye.

Congrats to Greg Paulus.  He deserves it!

That's pretty cool that he's sticking around bc Duke had an assistant opening too.  That should tell all the OSU fans that love to bash Matta for not winning a NC how good of a coach he is.  He's a HELLUVA coach and OSU basketball is lucky to have him.  Good luck to Paulus on his new job.  He does deserve it as many have said.

Congrats Greg! Hard working kid that will do big things in his coaching career. He was coached by one of the best in the business (despite my strong dislike of Coach K), and worked under one of the best ( You're my boy Thad!)

Loving all things Buckeye from SEC country in Alabama.

This is great for Greg! Congratulations on the promotion and do Buckeye Nation proud! Here's to hoping he'll become illustrious branch to the Thad Matta coaching tree.
