Your Vent Thread

At 6-5 and hobbling into this game, not many of us expected the Buckeyes to pull one out in Ann Arbor. To see those expectations realized in a heartbreaker is still tough to take (as are the 50 Wolverine runs with nary a just one holding call), but know this: Help is on the way.

So let the Wolverines have this one and celebrate their first victory in The Game in the Twitter/HD television era. Vent your hearts out here, but leave the personal stuff out.

DISCLAIMER: I am an insecure skidmark on humanity.

And there is something about being in Ohio to be pleased about?

In Michigan we do have the decent Tigers and Red Wings, improved Lions, successful MSU, a bunch of lakes and lots of Great Lakes shoreline, the dunes and lots of forests - to go with a resurrgent Michigan.

What have you got in the most boring, irrelevent state in the union (after Mississippi and Arkansas)fuj?  Oh, yeah, I forgot - you have Cedar Point, whoopee.

Some member jackass here - Matti as I recall - likened Ann Arbor to a whore.  Let me make a siimile for Columbus.  Columbus is the dingle berry on the asshole of the United States, Ohio.

As a Michigan grad and fan I am very happy and proud to have a historically great school like OSU as a respected opponent.  That respect does not extend to the many trailer park trash fans that OSU has - not all their fans, just the loud mouth, disrespect shitheads like Matti and Buckeye Chuck.

And now we know who sent the death threats to Ryan Hanby after the Texas game in 2005.

I'm surprised at how poor our defense played the 2nd half of the season.  We were stout as usual when the season started...

Could have gone our way, but we're not going to beat Mich every year for ever and ever, amen.  lots of young guys, we showed some heart.  I am philosophical about this since the future is a whole lot brighter than I expected when Tress was fired/resigned.  There's no denying, Mich has improved and is now a worthy opponent going forward.  Let's face it, they were like a scab team for the last 3 years.  Our resume will be much better when we beat them in the future.  Also, it will be fun to beat that Fred Flinstone looking Mother Scratcher.

The Lions suck, the Wings are old, the Pistons suck and the Tigers manage to fail in the playoffs in hilarious fashion every year. But you keep enjoying those forrests and lakes. You beat the worst Ohio State team in 20 years, at the end of the day the only reason this win means more than normal to you is because it was your first since 2003, and your last for the next several years too. Savor that shit, because it's temporary.

I am very disappointed with our defense. I can't blame Bolls today. Much better aggressive game plan. There were more throws on first down than I can remember in a long time.

This! There is no such thing as a "moral victory" when you are a Buckeye. BUT you have to say that Fickell jumped feet first into the biggest shit pile this side of Scam Newton and while we didn't win this game, and a few we should have won earlier, Luke kept his players in it and they battled hard for their coach. There is a lot to look forward to in the future fellow Buckeye brothers and sisters.

So you are saying dont down it on 3rd down? That type of radical thinking might just work.
Overall the game plan was sound. Think i said about 3 weeks ago this defense was terrible. The safeties take bad angles and give up big plays too often.
Next year the defense is back and offense will be better. I look for a few more top recruits to come in and make an impact from day one. Mr. Dunn can start at running back. Braxton will have the hand cuffs taken off. Had the play calling been this good all year Ohio state would be heading to the big 10 championship game.

Every program has  setbacks. There isn't an elite team out there - Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, all three Florida schools - that hasn't had a down season, with 5 or more losses, in the last ten years. It was bound to happen to Ohio State eventually. It took the loss of a coach, the loss of a superstar QB, multiple supsensions for the best players on the team, and a whole hell of a lot of bad luck, but it happened. Time to move on. No reason to dwell on the past.

Set your avi

Completely true, but it is important to remember the past, if not dwell on it. Remembering where we were right after beating Michigan last year, just before the storm broke, is most instructive.

Normally, a new coach takes a while to get his offense installed, and there are growing pains.  Nothing can be worse than this year, though, so no matter how complicated Meyer's spread is, we will be so much better on offense than this year.

poguemahone's picture

Set your avi

Based on the way Spielman carried on and on about Fickell, I'm worried that he knows something the rest of us don't, as in Fickell will not be back next year. I did not see the presser, but Fickell is also getting emotional, I'm worried that he also knows he's gone. Would be a shame. I think if you give him the opportunity to focus on just the defense, we'll be just fine next year.

AcrossTheField11's picture
AcrossTheField11 on 26 Nov 2011 - 5:52pm #

I don't want to see him go but you have to consider player alliegences.  You give your heart and soul on the field each week for coach Fickel and then you are told to buy into Urban Meyers system while Fickell is still on staff.  The last thing we'd want is schism in the locker room.

This happened at my highschool.  Our former coach was a teacher at the school, but was fired from the head coaching job.  A new coach was brought in while the former coach went to be QB coach at a neighboring high school.  Once a couple years of "cooling off" period were done, he rejoined the new coach's staff as the QB coach and they are now headed to the state championship game next week.

Maybe if we don't retain him right away, we get him back as a D coordinator a couple years down the road.  He'll probably be a HC by that point though.

Time and change will surely show how firm they friendship... O-HI-O.

Bucksfan's picture

It's like we've said about other OSU assistant coaches in the past, if you're just an assistant with head-coaching aspirations, then you need to pursue a head coaching job track sooner than later.  Biding your time underneath the same staff for 10 years doesn't do you any favors.  Fickell should have been a head coach at a MAC school years ago.

No need to get emotional about this one.  Fickell got his shot, and saw just how tough it can be at the highest level.  Now he can go become a legend somewhere else.

cplunk's picture

This team never got it together this year and the coaching was awful. Even with that and about a billion injuries they still almost won. I see nothing but positives for the future. Loads of young talent and the only things holding them back were youth, bad coaching, and failure to come together as a team. Bring on Urban and we'll dominate for another ten years. I don't feel as bad about this loss as usual. They barely beat our worst team in forever.

LISTEN: I have a GED and I am NOT TO BE TRIFLED WITH!

By the way, there was sure as fuck nothing on the reversed Michigan touchdown evident on the replays to reverse the call from.

Also in the two games UM lost two major blown calls may have had an effect.  The MSU fumbled lateral that was called an incomplete pass and the touchdown against Iowa at the end that could potentially tie the game.

cplunk's picture
cplunk on 26 Nov 2011 - 5:00pm #

I;m talking about the Toussaint run - the hold was certainly a hold.  And there was nothing definite about it, any part of the ball crossing the forward edge of the end zone is a touchdwn - it was called a touchdown on the field and reversed with no clear evidence (unless they had another video feed that ABC did not have).

Ok, really tough loss but....

1) Posey comes back in week 5/6, we win this game

2) Sweat isn't out, we win this game

3) Shazier doesn't get injured, we win this game

4) A couple of drops, we win this game

5) Boom runs a little better, we win this game

With all that we have been through, and as charmed as scUM's season has been, this is the best they could do...  I was really worried that if we lost, we could end up with a dogfight every year for the next 5 - 10 with Brady.  No way I feel like that now.  scUM has been damaged beyond repair, this is their high water mark.  Enjoy getting made love to in an inappropriate place in a BCS game.

Braxton learns how to put air under the ball, we have three more TDs including the game winner. They beat a badly coached disparate team, not our best.

Don't forget though- Michigan has crap talent right now. Hoke has a great class coming in. They'll be much better than this year in the next few years. No doubt this game was a heart-breaker.  But at least the Fickel, the offensive coaches, the offense, and Ryan Shazier and John Simon came to play.  If you would have told me before the game that our offense would put up 34 points I woud have thought a win would be a lock.  That being said, we definitely had some missed opportunities on offense.  But try to compare Braxton Miller to where Troy Smith was at this time his sophomore year, and you'll see (besides the loss to scUM) that Braxton Miller is well ahead of where Troy was.  Just the fact that he's already a throw-first qb takes most "running qbs" at least a year to sink in, if ever.  Michigan's defense will always struggle, but Braxton Miller will be able to complete most of those passes next year.

You heard Spielman, Shazier was playing on one leg!  He missed some plays that I'd expect him to make, but his internal drive is second to none.  He wasn't coming out with a knee injury.

And a final thank you to Luke Fickell.  Yes, his record doesn't show well, but he did a solid job keeping the team together, and saying the right things all year.  He was right, There was a game at noon on Saturday, and HIS A** was there!

Congrats to scUM...we'll be ready and waiting at the Shoe next year!

Great points. Even with a loss Shazier pretty much solidified himself as my favorite player on this team. The kid played with so much heart despite the injury, he should be quite the force for the next 2 (hopefully 3) years.

It may be tough to feel this way today, but I really believe this D could be very special next year. Pretty much everyone back, a less tumultuous offseason, and some of these talented underclassmen taking the next step, I really think it'll be a return of the silver bullets next year.

We both know that that Ohio State team had no business being in the national championship. Now, that being said, 2008 wasn't that disappointing of a season in my opinion. The loss to USC was inevitable when Beanie went down. That much we know. The home loss to PSU was ridiculous and not acceptable, but when you have a freshman QB, stuff like that happens. That bowl game against Texas was a battle. Keep in mind that UT team could have very easily played for a national championship itself, but due to its own conferences' archaic rules, could not. And with that, we were still one Anderson Russell whiff away from saying these seniors are departing with three lBCS bowl wins rather than two.

2008 was a good team. The fact that it disappointed against USC and Penn State bears no real relevance to next year's team. Lots of talented freshmen got PT this year, and there'll be a new coaching staff with designs on actually scoring points. I'm excited.

You could look at it 2 ways, I for one thought that it was "our year" that preseason with everything we had returning.

That being said, almost losing to Ohio at home, geting stomped by SC, only scoring 6 points in a loss to Penn State at home, and blowimg what shouldve been a victory in the fiesta bowl vs Texas made that 2008 season a dissapointing one for not only me, but a lot of Buckeye fans.

I agree with you about next years squad returning a lot of young talent and having a chance to to big things with an agressive coaching staff in place.

Other than the defense not pulling their weight (injuries hurt but the sheme and the execution were lackluster), the team and the coaches showed heart and fought until the end. I hate losing to those scumbags, especially Denard with his retarded mannerisms and that fat fuck Brady Hoke, but I feel better knowing that the script is about to be flipped with Urban Meyer coming in and with the solid foundation of returning players he will inherit. I never wanted Meyer to be the next head coach, but I'm warming to the idea now that it's becoming clear that it's inevitable and now that he's saying some things that I wouldn't have expected to hear him say. This loss hurts, but this was clearly the best opportunity for UM to take from us and that's what happened, even if the chance to steal it back was lost at the end.

I love the Buckeyes, I love Ohio State, and I look forward to shoving it up their asses next year and for years to come.

Fuck Michigan!

I agree about after a loss. Especially the way they played today, wasn't enough and that sucks but I love this team. I'll always have lots of respect for Luke and the way he handled things publicly, especially in the presser after the game.

Perfect sense. And it makes the wins so much sweeter. I love watching guys that made mistakes grow up and become solid players. Boom Heron used to be absolutely awful at seeing the cutback and just ran up his blockers' backs. Look at him now. He's a sick runner who is all heart and has great vision. Love watching our guys develop like that. Heck my favorite play in Buckeye history is part of Holy Buckeye, but it's Lydell Ross's block. He picked up a player and made it possible for Krenzel to throw. Ross was never what people though he'd become, but I love him for doing his job on that play, part of our title. Enough emotion, but seriously I hope the best for all these guys.

yeah, im gonna stop you there. remind yourself of the game that took place a month prior, when your so-proclaimed stud offense couldn't block vernon gholston for even a second. not to mention the season-opening loss to appalachian state (who?), which was followed by a beatdown from a slower version of the speed option oregon offense.

anyways, to the citrus bowl, you still gave up 35 points to that offense, and lets not forget that the florida defense, despite having brandon spikes and joe haden, was terrible all year. it didnt compare to the defenses ohio state and lsu fielded all year.

and last but not least, meyer has won 2 bcs titles in his first 4 years. need i say anymore?

I am not really sure what your are trying to say here.  I think you may be talking about the all time record for the game.  I do know Michigan fans dont really want to talk about cheating and all time records.  In the times of Chic Harley, UM would keep players up to 8 yrs if they exceled.  I know its the 1920s but its still cheating.

It always sucks to come up short to scUM, but it has to happen occasionally. I Love how the Bucks came out to play today. In light of the shit sandwich this has been look at some of the positives...In no game were we ever blown out. The Miami score included 7 points that were classlessas they were run up in the last few seconds. The boys were in all of the games, and most will be back to work with Urban! The future looks awesome. The BB Bucks will take down the Dookies on Tuesday, oh, and for those who missed it our Hockey team just swept scUM a week ago.

I was magnanimous below, and highly critical of Rodriguez and Robinson, but you have to admit whilst Tressel did a great job but he also caused a decade of critical problems.

OSU was a much better team than 6-5 heading in to THEGAME, no one denies that: You beat Wisconsin, almost beat PSU and MSU. If you had not had suspended players this season, this would have been another great 8 win team versus 9 win team in THE GAME.

Yes, Tress was a great coach. Also, Lloyd Carr fell down on the job the last few years. Rodriguez was a disaster. The issue that sullies the rivalry the past decade, and I believe divides folks, is the nature of what Tress did. I think what happened with Mo C, Troy and Tat sullied the rivalry. Did we get outcoached? Yes at certain points. Otherwise, we had 2 years of Rodriguez (that 3rd year he should have had his recruits / program in).

But what is important is the future. And I would guard the fanfare re UM. Yes, UM  had a great program, but Tebow was a Zook guy and Greg Mattison was UM's D coordinator. Second, UM needs to keep Fickell, for recruiting and institutional memory/consistency, but also needs to keep, I shudder to say this, ties to Tress. UM can't come in and think "this is my team now my way" or "i am Woody's true heir". Tress was a complicated man, and it didn't end up well. But UM needs to be careful until year 3 re putting his stamp/control on the program.

Till next year. Oh yes, all the snark / condemnation in whatever form that may follow hereto, is self-indicting. Let's be honorable in win or defeat.

Let's put the OSU/Up North game in perspective. It took losing Jim Tressel and a senior quarterback, two major injuries on defense, a rookie head coach..God love him...but in over his head, a freshmen quarterback, and the list goes on to barely beat OSU. How does that win feel Team Up North? :-)

Feels good. However, to downplay your own team (oh we really never had a chance, we lost player A, B and C; our HC was dismissed due to stupid charges, etc) is surprising given all the strong feelings expressed on this site prior to The Game, that OSU would rise up and beat UM.

I sense you picked your team - OSU - to lose based on all the barriers you presented. However, your football team seemed to think differently and played a tough game, start to finish.  As to sticking by your team and rooting them on despite the obstacles, well... your comments are self-evident. I applaud all the OSU fans who didn't make excuses, victory or loss.

Not making excuses, just stating the fact that we as Buckeye fans didn't think it meant much when OSU beat Michigan in the Rich Rod Days. But it did when Michigan was at its best. It took a lot of garbage going on at OSU to break the streak. With those circumstances, this should have been a blow out! Not a very sweet tasting victory.

Here's a scary stat.  Prior to the Mighigan game, Ohio State had attempted fewer passes (196) than all but about five FBS schools.  However, Ohio State had given up more sacks (36) than all but four FBS schools. There are many teams who throw it more than twice as often and haven't given up half as many sacks as we have.

Getting rid of Bollman will improve both play calling and offensive line play.  Both of these effects will result in more pass attempts and fewer sacks than the 2011 squad.  It really has nowhere to go but up.
