Bowl Schedule Set

Some of the interesting match-ups of the 2009-2010 bowl season include Miami-Wisco in the Champs Sports Bowl, Oklahoma Stanford in the Sun Bowl, PSU-LSU in the Capital One, UF-Cincy in the Sugar, and OK State-Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl. Of course a TCU-Boise St. match-up of unbeaten mid-majors should be a fun one to watch and seeing Iowa get a good shot to beat Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl could be big for the conference. On that note, get ready to hear the Penn State complainers talk about how they should have been in a BCS Bowl because they "travel well" or something like that.

boise and tcu got double-screwed. Not only does neither get a shot at the MNC, but they're playing each other, depriving them of a chance to prove themselves to all those who think their records are based on weak schedules by beating a more traditional power. Surely the BCS did this to minimize the number of undefeated teams at the end, but I'd be hopping mad if I were a fan of either school.

Boise State vs TCU, what a rip-off! no one cares which of these teams is better than the other, we want to see if they can beat a team like Florida. Now the BCS just sweeps them into a game which proves nothing.

Set your avi

Off-topic, but does anyone else think it's mildly hilarious that Boom and Saine shared the team's "outstanding offensive back" award? Tressel really is torn between those two...

Eh, for once I'm actually happy with all of the match ups. I don't really care about learning what the teams can do against Florida or Georgia Tech. I want to see good match ups for a change, and we finally have some.

This is ridiculous. I think fans of both TCU and Boise State should boycott the Fiesta Bowl and have them play in an empty stadium. 1) that would get the nations attention 2) the idiots at the Fiesta Bowl will lose money. Who wouldn't have wanted a TCU vs Florida or a BSU vs Iowa? It's insulting, so we should insult them back. The BCS only understands money. Boycott the Cop-Out Bowl!

No way the big 6 conferences wanted to see both Boise and TCU put blow out one of their own, like they did to Alabama last year.

They are essentially telling them to build a conference with the 12 best sports schools. Then we'll talk.

Set your avi

I'm sorry but the team awards don't mean shit. Do you really think that Brewster or Boren is pissed that a senior got the award? Cordle winning a meaningless award does not mean they haven't created a competitive balance.

The Big Ten has a pretty tough bowl schedule once again. I hope they can be competitive and come out with a winning record.

Set your avi
Brian on 6 December 2009 - 11:40pm #

So, don't the BCS bowls have an order to which they pick the teams to come? If everyone got their first pick, Sugar will of course take an SEC team, Orange is taking the ACC team. Isn't it conceivable that the only choice that the Fiesta had left was Boise? If anything it says something that the BCS has taken 2 mid-majors this year.

Set your avi
Brian on 6 December 2009 - 11:42pm #

I think the 2 BCS games are pretty favorable for the Big 10, and Penn State/LSU is a favorable match up. Wisconsin and Northwestern have tough matchups, but if you win the top 3 it would be a good bowl season.

Set your avi
Hayhayhay on 6 December 2009 - 11:51pm #

I think the match ups are actually pretty favorable this time. Ohio State and Iowa are both capable of winning their games. Penn State and LSU is tough for me to figure out at this time... I'll have to think about it a little more. I feel that Northwestern can definitely beat Auburn if their defense shows up. Wisconsin's offense is arguably the best in the Big Ten in terms of the problems it can cause, they can cause some mismatch problems with their tightends and get Tolzien rolling out. Miami's offense is obviously the issue there.

Elsewhere, Minnesota can definitely beat Iowa State, even without Decker. Michigan State/Texas Tech is probably the worst match up ... but I feel like Michigan State can put up some points as well.

don't worry boys, keep talking crap about Oregon. all the talk and insults regarding a lack of tradition I see on this site and other OSU/UO blogs just lets me know that OSU faithful are really scared, and I like that. you guys should be. our defense is a bit giving, but Pryor is going to wish he were somewhere else when he tries to run and Casey Matthews or TJ Ward kill him. OSU is not going to score enough points to win this game. Your defense isn't going to make enough stops for the previous fact to matter anyways. one game should really worry all the OSU faith faithful...Prudue. The reason I say Purdue is because they are a mediocre spread team that beat you by more than one score. OSU had trouble against a pretty poor spread team in Michigan too. Your defense may be good, but any defense can be made to look like crap when they are spread out in order to match up to the offense.
Our offense is honestly like nothing any of you have seen this year either. Masoli is a lot faster than the OSU faithful are giving him credit for. Just so you know, yes he can run over your corners. See last years Holiday Bowl where he trucked a defender from a tougher OSU (Oklahoma State) that plays in a tougher conference if you have questions about that. Lamichael James is faster than anyone you have on your team, and he doesn't get tackled easily. Your QB is going to be out there trying to make plays like Masoli and wind up f***in' up the game. He'll cry like Tebow and wish he had gone to UO to play in an offense that better suits his talents. Everyone knows he has not progressed the way he should/could be at OSU. That said, it is going to be close for a while. I see UO pulling away in the fourth and sealing the victory.
End 1st Quarter:7-10 OSU
Half:21-17 UO
End 3rd Quarter:31-20 UO
Final: 38-20 UO

I think it's funny that they are referring to Pryor screwing up and Masoli coming through with big plays. Hasn't Masoli put the ball on the ground a lot this year? I'm not going to say I don't think Oregon is a good team, and they have had some good years in the past. I don't care how many Heisman award winners or championships they don't have because that has nothing to do with this game. What does matter in this game is they don't have defense. They may move the ball some, and put up a few points, but the Buckeyes are going to control the clock, and Pryor will hit a couple of deep balls with Posey in single coveage. I'd take OSU by 2 TD's.

Set your avi

Thank you for saying that! For all the negatives mentioned about this offense, it hasn't been that bad! There have been some bad games, but what about racking up over 250 yards on the ground against one of the nation's best front 7 in Iowa. Also, did the same thing against Penn State and Pryor was healthy and hit some good passes. Again there have been some really bad games, but since Purdue this offense has turned around and done well. There my have been some miscues, drops, overthrows, but they've made giant steps forward in my opinion. I think people will be very surprised by the Buckeyes on January 1

While LSU was overrated earlier in the season as a top 5 team, IMO they have been underrated by numerous posters on this site. They are a good team. Last year an even weaker squad beat GT 38-3 in their bowl game - that same GT offense that elsewhere someone said can't be stopped.

The School Up North has average D talent now that Graham is gone, Oregon has very little, Cinci has none and Boise has yet to play anyone (yes Oregon, but I think the Ducks would score on them a little more this time around.) So what has happened?

The best case scenario would be this:

1st: Brian Kelly takes ND job tomorrow and doesn't coach the Sugar Bowl.

2nd: florida and Tebow get so fired up for tebow's last game, that Tebow injures himself before the game even starts

3rd: Backup john Brantley proceeds to throw for 6 td's en route to a 42-0 beatdown of the cats.

Depends on whether PSU's OL takes a few strides in bowl practices. If you PSU a solid OL, they'd be dangerous.

GT's offense is considerably more productive this year than it was last year. They punted only 30 times all year.

Finally, DC was very good last year against a great defense - U$C, but I agree that he's had 3-4 bad games against better defenses. If PSU just gives the guy a little time, PSU has more playmakers than LSU (Brandon LaFell and who else?).

"Typical Rose Bowl breakdown from Duck fan: Slowhio state is way overrated, dude! They lose every BCS game they've ever been in. The chokeyes have never seen an offense like Oregon's speed and precision. Your QB is worse than a high school QB, but he should have gone to Oregon, because then he would have been all speed and precision. Everything that needs to be said has just been said! Oregon Ducks 48, Slowhio state 3. Nuff said! Do you hear me, dude? I've just covered all the angles and nuances of the game, so bow down to the Ducks!"

Remember, Urban has a master's degree from The Ohio State University hanging on his wall. He was a grad assistant, here. At worst, the score should have been 31-14, in Glendale. Even Miles, a traitor to his state (Ohio) who played for Michigan, restrained his dogs and kept the score respectable. For Meyer - a member of the fold - to do us like he did - so excessively - earned him and all teams he may coach a hell of a big payback.

GT may have been more productive this year but the offense was no slouch last year. They were 4th in the nation in rushing and led the ACC in total offense. They were at their hottest at the end of the year and at the time were probably not much less efficient, if at all, than they've been this year. LSU slammed the door on them. And as I said, LSU is better this year. Defensively they are a lot better.

I hope PSU takes it to them. But I live in SEC country and wind up watching these teams a lot since that is what gets shown down here. I have a lot of respect for the football they play.

LSU matched up with Florida's and Alabama's OLs this year and acquitted themselves fairly well, though 'Bama did wear them down and took control in the 2nd half. But PSU's line isn't getting remotely close to that level by taking "a few strides".

I'm not willing to rate the DC USC performance as good. They had the early drive and then it was all USC until the 2nd half. But the game was over at halftime and USC knew it. PSU scored 17 points in the 4th quarter. Also, Clark had better talent around him last year on the line and the skill positions.

For LSU Charles Scott is a very good back. Keiland Williams and Russell Shepard actually average more YPC and are quite dangerous. Trindon Holiday is a major threat with his speed. Terrence Toliver is an important target at tight end. The issue with LSU offensively has been the consistency of Jordan Jefferson. But he faces better defenses on a weekly basis than Clark does and at least one or two of these defenses are as good or better than any Clark has seen, especially in the secondary. I don't see PSU as having more playmakers. I think believing that is just a function of being more familiar with the B10/PSU as a fan of the conference/team. Many LSU fans probably think Penn State doesn't have a playmaker outside of Royster, if they even know that much.

I don't want to be a defender or apologist for the SEC. But a number of people on this site denigrate any team that isn't Florida or Alabama and have been calling the conference down. I heard the same thing last year prior to bowl season, which showed otherwise. Same thing goes for the lack of respect some have shown for the PAC-10, which was widely dissed last year as well, yet went 5-0 in the bowls.

I think LSU wins it. But I won't be unhappy if I am wrong.

There are still a lot of good defenses that carried their teams this year. Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, Nebraska, and I guess you can even put Texas in there.

Red Queen Race: you make several good points, and perhaps I was underselling some of LSU's skill position guys, but I think you conversely give a little too much credit to SEC defenses.

LSU was 108th in total offense this year: 84th in rushing and 99th in passing - that despite being +7 in turnover margin. They were 107th worst in sacks allowed. They had serious offensive liabilties beyond Jordan Jefferson.

Total defense rankings of LSU's opponents: 79, 58, 93, 63, 30, 4, 51, 103, 2, 65, 24, 90. A few top notch D's mixed in with a bunch of pedestrian D's.

PSU's defense will smother LSU's offense. But, you're right, we'll have to see about that PSU OL. They might really struggle. Didn't these 2 teams play like a 10-9 bowl game about 5 years ago or so?

I was furious too. I actually would have loved to see TCU play UC as well, but TCU vs Florida would have been great. Could you imagine if Boise played UC? The over/under might have been around 100.

A problem with using ranking numbers is they don't account for quality of competition. TCU is a case in point. In a different conference I definitely believe their numbers would not be nearly as good. In fact, they might well be "pedestrian". But you're right, I may be overestimating the SEC. The bowl games will sort things out.

PSU's front 7 is good. But their secondary is not. It wasn't last year either but no one in the B10 exposed it. I thought Charles Scott would be healthy for this game but an SI article implies he will not. So LSU may have to throw more and it could come down to pass blocking. The numbers you put up do not look good but there isn't any way to compare teams that don't play common schedules. The SEC plays aggressive man-to-man and blitzes. PSU plays soft zone. You may find that the "sacks allowed" number means nothing and the zone gets ripped apart. I may find that LSU is really as weak as they look on the line. We'll have fun finding out.

After two years (sometimes less) my memory gets hazy so I had to go look to see if PSU had played LSU recently. According to gopsuspots.com this is only the 2nd meeting ever between the two with PSU beating them 16-9 in the 1974 Orange Bowl.

I've since realized that the game I was thinking about was PSU v. Auburn, not LSU, and it was more than 5 years ago. I looked it up and PSU lost 13-9 to Auburn in the 2003 Citrus Bowl (2002 season). PSU clinged to a 9-7 lead until Auburn scored a TD with like 2 minutes left. It woulnd't surprise me if we saw something similar with PSU v. LSU.

You're right about the raw statistical rankings being misleading because of scheduling. A full season helps to reduce that some, but by no means most of, that issue. For example, a MAC team might end up 45th in rush defense, but if they'd played in the BT or SEC, we know their numbers would be much worse.

Still, I feel that LSU will be playing a legit defense against PSU. Yes, they have a vulnerable secondary, but so do a lot of teams in the SEC. It's not like the offenses in the SEC were significantly better overall than BT offenses this year. The main difference between the BT and SEC this year was that the SEC had 2 grade A/A- teams (depending on how tough of a grader you are) and the BT had two B+ teams (Ohio State and Iowa) and below.

That LSU played FLA tough could be a sign of trouble for PSU, but I'll take my chances.

Thanks for your feedback. Now bring on the bowl season. I am already suffering Buckeye football withdrawal pains.
