Not as bad as I though still think the number on the helmet is fugly~
Im diggin these throwbacks. I can’t wait to see the team take the field in em!
Based on the fact that Nike is making their Elite Combat (or whatever the hell it’s called) system of dress standard next season, I think we can expect some changes next season.
I’m thinkin the same thing
i don’t like em. way to take a shit on tradition. the helmet would look better without number on side. whose idea was that. if they did any uniform change they should have just worn ones that looked like the year 2002, or whatever they wore during the latter woody hayes years and honored him as well.
yikes, i take back the good things i said about the pants. i thought they were gonna be truly old school but of course nike decided to BRING THEM INTO THE 21ST CENTUUURRRYYYYYYYY
this looks like crap. its like the plaid pastel suit your mom made you (me) dress up in on easter when you were 5. lets wear them once and never speak of it again
Yeah, agreed on the heinous looking pants. They looked ok before shown on the dudel…
The helmet sux as well. Besides the fact that the number didn’t appear on the helmet till 1956 or so? I thought this was supposed to be a tribute to ‘54.
The jersey would look better if the scarlet and gray on the sleeves has black outlines as well, like the ‘54 jerseys did….
All in all, a total marketing scam by Nike to generate more $. These unis, the whole kit, should be a one and done experiment.
I kind of feel like this is all a tempest in a teacup…and “take a shit on tradition” comes pretty close to being a meaningless statement: WHAT tradition? I guess, if I combine that sentiment w/ the gripe “I thought this was supposed to be a tribute to ‘54″, I can construct a valid argument that there’s something wrong going on here – but it’s not one that I’d agree with.
What are we supposed to do – clutch our pearls and retire to our fainting couches at the very SUGGESTION that Nike hasn’t been TOTALLY faithful to the ‘54 unis, and that they (and the Athletic Department) might hope to sell a few extra jerseys and make a little extra money?
Say it ain’t so!
Look: anybody who bothers to take even a cursory look at the history of Ohio State’s uniforms will quickly realize that there is no “tradition” AT ALL to speak of, other than the current helmets/helmet stickers/pants. Seriously. It was just 10 years or so ago that the jerseys featured hideously GINORMOUS shoulder numbers – Google up some images of Terry Glenn if you don’t know what I’m talking about. It wasn’t too long before THAT that the sleeves of the jerseys featured something like what we’ve got now, rather than the last iteration. And it wasn’t too long before THAT that the shoulder/sleeve numbers were rendered in black.
All this is not to mention, of course, the Bruce/Cooper era experimentation with RED cleats for big games.
The unis we’re discussing here are not, obviously, AUTHENTIC RE-CREATIONS of the ‘54 unis, but nobody ever said they were going to be. What they ARE is sorta-retro unis that incorporate SOME elements from the “‘54-ish” era of Buckeye football. I don’t love them, but I don’t hate them either. I have my own ideas about what “throwback” unis would be super-cool, BUT: those don’t really matter. Neither do the stylistic preferences of any other person here (though I’d argue that using “sux” unironically when what one wants to say is “sucks” ought to result in an automatic devaluation of the opinion offered by the “sux”-using “dudel”).
Let’s just see how they look in real life, shall we?
basically i just hate the idea of us using “tradition” as a buzzword to try and make nike’s shallow attempt at making more money by messing with our unis more palatable to fans.
nike doesnt give two shits about tradition, they care about money. if they thought they had a way to make OSU fans like neon yellow and pink unis and make more money from it, theyd try it and make the team wear em.
i hate that OSU would become an arm of the marketing scheme of one of the lamest and most irritating sports companies in the world. i hate nike and their stupid false bravado, all of their marketing and slogans try and evoke mythic or epic bullshit that always comes off as sterile and fake. “pro combat”? really?
look, im an OSU fan and a big ten football fan. i dont root for some kind of superhero-esque team that snarls at the camera while jumping over 8 dudes and doing a backflip into the endzone. nike loves that shit. i dont. i root for the gritty muddy grind it out team that plays hard and loves it.
what im getting at is that OSU, with our simple helmets and unis, evokes that. we dont need some updated futuristic lame ass crap to get us excited about football. im sick of nike and their crap. i just want to enjoy football without some marketing executive trying to tell me im doing it wrong.
also “its just one game blah blah blah,” sorry, this is nike. theyre gonna try like hell to make OSU and every other school they make unis for as MOUNTAIN DEW RED ZONE XXXTREEEEEME as possible until the end of time.
i was never prouder of our fanbase when we collectively rose up and put the kibosh on that insane corporate sponsorship for the michigan game. we need to keep that up, because the companies looking to make a buck arent going to stop trying to exploit the fans’ sensibilities.
EXACTLY, my friend. Thus: “tempest in a teapot” – you think Nike doesn’t LOVE the fact that pics of these unis, and arguments about them, are burning up the Buckeye blogosphere? Shit, man – if just ONE person buys one of these pseudo-throwbacks for every TEN people who read 11W et. al., or even ONE of every ONE HUNDRED Buckeye fans that watches next Saturday, then they’ll have succeeded. Talk about your guerrilla marketing.
Far be it from me to tell anybody how to act (in such a trivial situation, no less), but if anybody out there doesn’t like this development, the BEST way to stop it is probably not to plaster the Intertubes w/ outrage, but rather to say “meh” or “whatever”, and make sure that nobody you know BUYS one of these things when they inevitably show up in Nike/OSU-approved outlets.
But even then, you’ll likely be as successful as Canute was against the waves – when you takes your $ from Nike, you takes your chances.
or “teacup”. Whichever.
I think they will end up looking pretty sick. You know they will look better on the players than just layed on the ground or on a mannequin. Do you think that Thad or Heyward will look any less badass in these jerseys? Well maybe Heyward, but it could be because I’m trying to imagine things after eating muschrooms, but it’s ok because the helmets are cool enough to make up for it. The worst looking player on either sideline will be Forcier in the classic winged helmets. For once we will se what it looks like for the Bucks to wear modern jerseys, because they look more modern to me than classic 1954 because of Nike blah blah blah… and maybe it will just make the win over Michigan slightly more special. Might just be my rather inebriated state of mind but I think that when the Buckeyes run out of the tunnel at that piece of shit of a stadium they will look pretty damn badass. Discussing the game at hand agains Iowa Pryor goes 175-100 and Ohio State wins 25-18
Don’t like em. Thought they looked better the first time I saw those pics, but now… ehhh not so much. If you’re gonna do throwback unis then stay true to the source, not this nu-retro bullshit. Fuckin Nike. Cleats look fresh though. Gloves, absolutely garbage.
I just threw up.
wish they had kept silver helmets. But honestly, I’d buy one of those jerseys
Tradition? I was surprised that the silver helmets & buckeye leaves only go back to 1967! It’s not like we have a long standing uniform identity like wings up north, of PSU/Ala blandness. How long has ND had the gold helmets?
Yeah, the 1950s unis were ugly (number on helmets-ugh!), but that’s what’s cool about them.
One time is enough tho.
The modern helmets actually debuted in 1968, but close enough.
Meh, whatever. I do like the pants, but the jersey is ok. As has been mentioned, it’s not like OSU has had the same exact look for over 70 years, so who cares. As we don’t become Oregon East (and that won’t happen), I’m good with the one time deal. (I just prefer it be this weekend and not for U-M, but again, whatever.)
As *long* as… /fixed
Jerseys don’t look that bad…the whole thing looks like a mess.
ohio state sucks no matter what uni’s they wear
yooooooooooooooooooou’re siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick
BURN!!!!!!!
PS why is the uni possessing the ‘they wear’. I’m confused.
oh…and you’re mother i a whore
I do not think the Buckeyes have much of a tradition in regards to uniforms. I have been following them for years (lets just say back to the 70’s and leave it at that) and it seems they change every five years. The unis that Griffin wore was different than Byers which was different than George which was different than Troy.
Although not popular on here, I liked the Eddie George era uniforms the best. I loved the big numbers on the shoulder pads.
On a side note, when did the Buckeyes go away from the gray helmet and start using that sparkly thing they have now? That was a change that did raise much alarm if I remember correctly.
I like them, but they aren’t a throwback. I also don’t like our current sleeve stripes but I have a feeling Nike is gonna completely change our uni’s next year…thoughts?
I agree… I think this specific uni is a one time deal, but the uni’s will be the new “pro combat” style next year. They won’t be extremely different then the current uni’s as far as colors, stripes, numbers, whatever… They’ll just have the “more advanced, light weight” materials junk.
How are you holding up after the storm? I lost some siding, part of my fence, and my yard is a mud pit…
Just fine here… My gate got ripped off its hinges! (Less than a year old) The steel buckled and tore in half! Other than that not bad. Minor flooding just in the roads and some huge limbs down, but they luckily missed the house and garage.
Independence was rough yesterday…I haven’t been able to run.
If you don’t like them, don’t buy one. I’ve never really understood the concept of fans wearing a jersey to the game or at the bar.
:-0
Have you seen Columbus on gameday?
i hate new jersey
too many guidos. are we talking about the same thing?
Cocktails for SBB.
Yeah, I think wearing jerseys is pretty dweeby as well. Especially if:
- You have your own name on the back.
- You pair it with jorts
- You’re also wearing a visor
the gloves are the best part…just sayin
our gloves are the lamest out of the ones that i’ve seen.
I thought they were pretty bad ass.
The best thing about these uniforms will be Tate Forcier seeing them swirling above his head as he lay half comatose in is hospital bed after being abused by our d-line.
F#%k! My cable’s out……they can’t get to it until Wednesday.
to the bar!
is TCU going with their Brett Michaels look today?
Don’t care for ‘em. Jersey is not bad, but really don’t care for the rest of the giddup.
All gray uni’s would be the play. Will they put the buckeyes on the helmets?
Good news guys, they found water/ice on the moon. We have the uniforms, now we have the water. I heard NASA is constructing a stadium up there now. We’re so close to playing football on the moon that I can taste it.
I like them. I think it’s going to look pretty cool. The numbers on the helmets are a little lame, but it’s possible that they had to do that because there weren’t any numbers on the sleeves in those days. It might be a rule to have numbers that you can see from a side view. Can anyone validate that?
there are no numbers on the 54 helmets
Bucksfan is correct. When “TV” numbers came into use in the 1950s, many college and pro teams — including Penn State, Iowa, Wiscy and MSU — put these secondary numbers on either side of the helmet instead of on the sleeves:

I like em a lot, and the helmets are badass
Yeah, I like OSU’s current jersey’s, the silver helmets and the buckeye leaves, but does that mean we can’t rock a new jersey for one game a year? I’m sorry if this uni doesn’t live up to the personal expectations of each individual fan, each of whom probably has his or own own awesome idea for a really cool jersey. But honestly, these have a relatively simple design and aren’t bad.
A note on Nike sponsorship:
Nike is just glad to be sponsoring us, they understand that Ohio State has an established look, that’s why we’re not coming out next Saturday with duck wings, frog pants, bear claw stripes, spirograph shoulders etc. Nike uses teams like Oregon and TCU (who don’t really have a traditional look or identity) to roll out their crazy new designs, but they have nothing to gain by messing with the best aspects of an already established uniform (See: Texas, USC, Oklahoma)
Either way: If you want to get mad at anyone it shouldn’t be Nike; they’re just a private company trying to make money. blame Ohio State’s Sports Information Department who approved the design. I guarantee that if anyone at OSU expressed concern about tradition, Nike wouldn’t push a change; because simply having their swoosh on a high-exposure program’s uniform is worth it for them.
good point
however we do have spirograph shoulders. it’s just hard to see in that pic since it’s grey on white. it’s that flywire stuff that nike is putting in everything now.
finally mix it up a bit. i like em even better if they kept the silver helmet
I love it!
Not to mention we will need some motivation since that team up there is so bad.
My objection is, quit wrapping this up as a “throwback” the only reason they call it that and tribute a team from long ago, is because they knew it was the only way to get people to like the idea. This looks nothing like the old uniform. Just say, we’re Nike, you have a contract with us, now you mush wear this. They want to make more money and sell ugly jerserys to people. I hope it doesn’t stick, but I most certainly fear it will.
I just wish they were selling it in my size! The largest is a 2XL and I wear 3XL.
I wonder what TSUN is wearing for The Game? Maybe some goofy looking fury animal head with large bucked teeth on the helmet?
