BlogPoll Ballot: Week 3

What a great weekend for Ohio football, not only does Ohio State bounce back with a shutout of Toledo, but Cincinnati goes out to Oregon State and dominates their game.

After 3 weeks, we don't have any more answers as to who will be there in the end. Cal and Ole' Miss may appear overrated, but they will get their chance to shine in the next few weeks. The highest climber was Miami, FL., who has impressed their first 2 games, but have to face GaTech VaTech and Oklahoma over the next 2 games.

We dropped Boise State a spot, because there is no way they beat OSU or USC and don't be surprised to see Oklahoma jump them next week. Georgia also dropped, because they can't stop anyone. As usual, let us know what you think or if we are idiots. It will all shake up again next week, as some interesting battles appear on the horizon.

1 Florida The Florida defense held Tennessee to 210 total yards and shut up Lane Kiffin in the Gators 23-13 win. The Vols defense gave Florida everything they could handle, but Herban has too many athletes. Next up: at Kentucky, 6:00. --
2 Texas Held off the Texas Tech 34-24, despite giving up 420 yards through the air. The Longhorns offense was kept in check most of the night, but like Florida, simply has more athletes on defense, holding the Red Raiders to -6 yards rushing. Next up: UTEP, 3:30. --
3 Alabama Spanked North Texas 53-7, giving up just 187 total yards, while gaining 523 themselves. The Tide averaged 5.8 YPC on their 45 rushing attempts. Next up: Arkansas, 3:30. UP1
4 California Finally woke up in the 4th quarter, scoring 2 TD's and won at Minnesota, 35-21. Jahvid Best carried the rock 26 times for 131 yards and 5 TD's, while the Gophers could only muster 37 yards on the ground. Next up: at Oregon, 3:30. UP1
5 Mississippi Took down SE Louisiana 52-6. The Rebels racked up 500 total yards, including 258 on the ground. Jevan Snead was 16-28 for 209 yards and 3 TD's. Next up: at South Carolina, 7:30 Thursday. UP1
6 Penn State Beat Temple 31-6, finally getting Royster over the century mark with 134 on 19 carries. Daryll Clark was 16-26 for 167 yards a 2 TD's, his lowest production of the season. Next up: Iowa, 8:00. UP1
7 LSU Beat up on instate foe Louisiana-Lafayette, 31-3. The offense is still finding their way, gaining just 330 total yards, but the defense is fast and will give them a chance as the schedule ramps up over the next 3 weeks. Next up: at Mississippi State, Noon. UP1
8 Southern Cal Once again lost to an inferior opponent the game after Ohio State, this time falling at Washington, 16-13 on a last second FG. Aaron Corp showed why Barkley won the job, throwing for just 110 yards and a pick. The Trojans had 3 TO's on the day, while also being flagged for 8 penalties. Next up: Washington State, 10:15. DOWN5
9 Ohio State Held the #5 nationally ranked offense to just 210 total yards and ZERO points. TP had a career day, throwing for 262, rushing for 112 and a combined 4 TD's. The Silver Bullets are definitely back, holding the Rockets to just 9 first downs. Next up: Illinois, 3:30. UP2
10 Boise State Dropped them a couple of spots, depsite beating Fresno State 51-34. The Broncos defense is suspect, giving up 507 total yards, including 320 on the ground. They did gain 480 themselves, but for us, there is no way this team beats either USC or OSU. Next up: at Bowling Green, 7:00. --
11 Oklahoma Looks like the passing attack is back with Landry Jones under center, as the Sooners beat Tulsa 45-0. Jones completed 25 of 37 for 336 yards and 6 TD's, while his backs gained 193 on the ground. Next up: at Miami, FL. 10/03. UP1
12 Virginia Tech Pulled off a miraculous win at home against Nebraska, 16-15, getting an 81 yard pass from Tyrod Taylor to Danny Coale in the last minutes to set up the winning score. Gave up 207 on the ground, but won the TO battle, 2-0. Next up: Miami, FL., 3:30. UP1
13 Miami (Florida) The swagger is back, after taking down 2 top 25 teams to start the season. Miami beat Georgia Tech on Thursday, 33-17, as Jacory Harris was 20 of 25 for 279 yards and 3 TD's. The Hurricanes held G. Tech to just 95 yards on the ground. Next up: at Virginia Tech, 3:30. UP9
14 Cincinnati Went out west and took down Oregon State, 28-18. Tony Pike lead the way, going 31 0f 49 for 332 yards and 2 TD's. Next up: Fresno State, noon. UP6
15 North Carolina Took down East Carolina 31-17, holding the Pirates to 247 total yards. Freshman Erik Highsmith reeled in 6 catches for 113 yards and a score to lead the way. Next up: at Georgia Tech, Noon. UP1
16 Missouri Destroyed Furman 52-12, gaining 525 total yards in the win. Senior Jared Perry hauled in 7 catches for 161 yards and 2 TD's, as Missouri managed 329 yards passing and 4 TD's. Next up: at Nevada, 9:00 Friday. UP2
17 Pittsburgh Beat Navy 27-14, holding the Midshipmen to 129 yards on the ground. The Panthers held Ricky Dobbs to 6 of 21 paasing for 89 yards and 21 yards rushing on 26 carries. Bill Stull was 17 of 24 for 245 yards and a score for the Panthers. Next up: at NC State, 3:30. UP4
18 TCU Whooped Texas State 56-21, gaining 508 total yards, including 286 on the ground. Joseph Turner ran 13 times for 129 yards and 3 TD's. Next up: at Clemson, 3:30. UP5
19 Georgia Dropped due to their inability to stop anyone, winning another shootout 52-41 over Arkansas. The Dawgs were penelized 14 times and had 3 TO's, but still managed 530 total yards, including 375 through the air. Next up: Arizona State, 7:00. DOWN5
20 Michigan It pains us to type that name back into the top 25, but they have been deserving thus far, taking down Eastern Michigan 45-17. The game was close at halftime, but the Wolverines busted it open, scoring the last 21 points. Carlos Brown had 13 carries for 187 yards and 2 scores. Next up: Indiana, Noon. --
21 Kansas The Jayhawks destroyed Duke, 44-16, getting 338 yards and 3 scores from Todd Reesing, on 28 of 41 passing. Next up: Southern Miss., Noon UP3
22 Florida State Went into Mormon Country and spanked BYU, 54-28. Simply looked much faster than the Cougars, racking up 313 yards rushing and causing 5 BYU TO's. Next up: South Florida, Noon. --
23 Oklahoma State Reappears in the top 25 after their 41-24 beat down of Rice. Zac Robinson lead the way with 14 of 20 for 227 yards and 2 TD's. Next up: Grambling State, 7:00. --
24 Nebraska Was beating Virginia Tech for most of the game, before falling 16-15. Roy Helu Jr. ran 28 times for 169 yards. Next up: Louisiana-Lafayette, 7:00. DOWN5
25 UCLA Enters the top 25 after their 23-9 home win against Kansas State. The Bruins udes a balanced attack, gaining 186 in the air and 173 on the ground. Next up: at Stanford 10/03. --

Dropped Out: Brigham Young (#9), Georgia Tech (#15), Utah (#17), Oregon State (#25). (Last Week's Ballot)

How exactly do you drop two spots in the polls with the way OSU played yesterday?

While it's crap, it's pretty clear that SC isn't as good as anybody thought. It makes sense for SC to be ranked ahead of OSU right now. Moving Oklahoma up but moving OSU down, however, makes no sense.

I'd be happier about Cincinnati if their fans weren't completely insufferable. Also I think the logic with dropping us two spots in the AP poll is that the USC loss now looks worse because of their loss to UW. Which is dumb because as hilarious as that loss is, USC wasn't anywhere near full strength against the huskies. Play that game again with a fully healthy mcknight, Barkley, and mays, and the outcome is almost certainly different.

Because the poll system is stupid.

My biggest problems is that OU moved up, if the pollsters really wanted to stick with putting teams behind teams they lost to OU should but 20th right behind BYU

With regards to the Fanpoll on the side...I rank the offensive play-calling an A. The execution was a C+.

Even Adam Rittenberg thinks it is getting ridiculous how much love Oklahoma gets from the media, and hate OSU gets, if only he had any pull at ESPN

I just watched on DVR Pryor's running sneak into the endzone during the 3rd quarter. Did anyone else see how Tress approached him after that play? I got the feeling Boom was suppose to run up the middle (like always) instead of Pryor sneak it in. I got the feeling Pryor probably changed the play because Boom and whoever was at FB were looking at their plays around the waist a little confused.

I thought the same thing. And if LiC did, in fact, change the play, I say good for him.

Its not just love for Oklahoma, that obviously comes from the star power of their QB, but the love the B12 gets over the B10.

Im not one to venture too far back in time to compare programs, but hasn't Oklahoma flopped in every big game for the last five years? Not to mention getting embarrassed by Wac and Mwc opponents?

I mean just last year,

1.Okla. loses in convincing fashion
2. Texas gets a scare from the "slow" Buckeyes,
3. The b12 no.3, Texas Tech, gets waxed by ole miss

Then moving forward to this year.

1. okla is embarrased by BYU, who themselves gets crushed by FSU
2.OKST. is thumped AT HOME to a conf.USA team
3. Texas gets into a dogfight with a supposed rebuilding Texas tech.

After all that, the b10 is still considered below the b12. Oh, I guess since Illinois can't beat Mizzou then that is all justified. Gimme a break.

Probably needs to happen more often. Pryor is far more dangerous on the run.

I think the Big 12 is still better then the Big 10 cause lets be honest it is pretty garbage this year but when do you hear negative talk about Oklahoma? They have lost 3 MNC in the same time OSU has lost 2 (LSU and USC losses were just as big of blowouts as Florida and LSU) and they always manage to lose to a team they are better then, at least the Buckeyes lose to teams that are favored to beat them to begin with!!!!!!

I really couldn't agree more. If Pryor is out there then it is HIS game. Tressel isn't gonna yank the kid out of the game because he isn't doing the play that is called or whatever. Although I may be wrong. Go back to N. Illinois game of 06. Troy Smith threw a bomb and got down to the goal line and Tress immediadtely took Smith out and put Zwick in, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DRIVE right before a TD. And what do you know? Zwick trips and fumbles and the ball is turned over. I can't wait until Pryor gets to the point where his reads are faster and he makes hot routes and audibles etc.

Ole Miss at 4 is a joke! They've beat Memphis and SE Louisiana and are now 2-0. Michigan beat E. Mich, W. Michigan and Notre Dame are are now 3-0. Iowa beat N. Iowa, Iowa State and Arizona and are also 3-0. Both teams have good wins against BCS teams and rank 23rd in the AP and not at all, respectively. Ridiculous. Just think, if this was 2006, Michigan with the identical schedule and record at this point may be in the top 5.

Not to worry too much, though, as Ole Miss plays at South Car on Thursday as a 4 point favorite. I can't wait to see a mediocre SC team put the hype to rest.
