Bizarro Tressel?

One guy wins all of the big ones, but always drops a small one. The other guy takes care of the small ones, but has trouble with the big ones.

Which one would you rather have?

    Tressel, w/o a doubt…

  2. Matt says:

Pete’s one of the very very few ‘big-time’ coaches that I respect, his record speaks for itself. But Jim Tressel was born to coach the Buckeyes, and he is our guy.

  3. Matt says:

And wins ALL of the big ones? I think Vince Young would disagree.

  4. PG says:

Welcome to the overrated club, USC. Ha!

Still love my Buckeyes and Tressel though.

  5. Buckeye in Big d says:

Caroll must drive SC fans nuts. how do you love to UCLA, Standford and Oregon State in successive years when your team is loaded with talent and those teams are sooooo bad.

can you imagine the outcry if Tress & Co lost to Northwestern, Minnesota and Indiana?

  6. Chaoscrusader says:

The Bucks slept-walked through the non-conference schedule…. Playing about as uninspired as I have ever seen them play. Right now they a chance at some redemption, WIN the Big Ten Championship and play USC in the Rose Bowl!!!! Here is the rub, if they do not step up like the champions that they are, then say hello to some other TBD bowl that is not on or after New Year’s Day. If I was Tress, I would go Woody on them!!
WE ARE CHAMPIONS!!! You have to start believing and playing like that. We cannot let some punk-A** overstuffed rodent come into our house and let them slap us around!!! I want the opening kickoff to be short so we have a chance hit everyone of those pu**ies!!! At the end of our first defensive play, their QB better not be standing. Our first play offensive play will be done out of a goal line formation, so we can punch them in the gut when we get ten yards out it. Gentlemen, play time is F–king over!!! It is time to kick some A**!!!!!!

  7. BrotherBuck says:

Watching Carroll was probably the most entertaining part of last night’s game.

After the Beavers’ second TD you could see the “Oh no, not again” look on Petey’s face.

The Trojans failed the “Quizz.” Rodgers put on a clinic between the tackles. Does anyone still think not having Beanie for USC wasn’t big??

  8. Brian says:

Sorry B-Buck but I dont think having Beanie in that game would have mattered. The difference between Oregon St’s O-line and ours is they played with a lot of heart and guts last night. Our’s havent done that since well, ummm, damn I cant remember. Well maybe last year against Penn St or Michigan. Having Beanie wouldnt have made a difference he would have been facing a wall of trojans everytime he touched the ball.

  9. MITCH G. says:

Its too bad that we played them in week 3….. would have been a different game by week 6

  10. JoseOle says:

Here is what to say to the world when/if tOSU wins out. 1. No Beannie in the USC game. 2. Pryor is now the QB and the offense is much improved. 3. Nobody else deserves to play in the championship game either so it might as well be us. USC needs to go down again, and the SEC needs to beat each other up. This year is going to be as crazy as last year and Ohio State is not out of the hunt yet, but they have to take care of their business first.

OSU vs. BYU in the National Championship!!

  11. BuckeyeSki says:

Seeing Surfer-Pete’s face last night was great. I really don’t think that we have any chance of playing for the MNC, but a rematch with the men of Troy may be in our near future. Truly hope the troops were watching this one, and come out inspired for this “tune-up” game. Wisco better be on alert, cuz USC losing is huge

  12. FlipBuckeye says:

Do you really want to see OSU in another title game they don’t deserve to be in?

Until we can get the kind of fire that the other OSU showed last night, our current team just does not belong on the field with a top ranked team. I’d love for us to sweep the B10 schedule but I don’t want us to be in any MNC conversation. Even then it’s a long shot considering the teams ranked better than us have to falter, some even twice for us to jump them.

I know all the Buckeyes are celebrating this upset, but there is something underlying… if OSU and USC win out from here, can anyone say rematch in the Rose Bowl? Scary I know, but a new look OL/DL, Pryor under center, AND a healthy Beanie with a seasoned Boom Herron? Oh hell yes.

Anyway, I’m glad I stayed up for this game. That Moevao guy has quick release and excellent decision making. Don’t even get me started on Quizz, that kid is like a ferret. And for them to shut down USC’s high powered offense like they did just makes tOSU’s D look worse. McKnight with 10 yards rushing??? Wow.

  13. FlipBuckeye says:

BTW Tressel needs to study this game’s film hard for next year’s “Showdown at the ‘Shoe”.

  14. Joe Fox says:

That was NOT the same Oregon State team I saw in the first week of the season. I watched their first game, and commented to a buddy that I’d never seen a more discombomulated, disorganized, uncoordinated offense in my life. I thought Moevao wouldn’t last two weeks.

Earle Bruce used to say that teams show their greatest improvement from the second to the third game. That certainly seemed to be the case for Oregon State. Wow.

Beanie wouldn’t have made a lick of difference in the USC game. The key to Oregon State’s win was line play – on both sides of the ball. On offense, they fired off and sustained their blocks. On defense, they were quick, disruptive and relentless. Ohio State still hasn’t shown any of those characteristics, on either side of the ball. If I were a gopher, I’d be licking my chops, too.

USC used nine men in the box, and still couldn’t stop a determined Oregon State running game. Ohio used six or seven in the box on many a clear running down, and had little trouble stopping Ohio State. Ridiculous.

(I’m fascinated by folks who think the offense is “much improved” under Pryor. It isn’t. Pryor is making plays with his feet because the O-line still can’t block consistently, and two of his touchdown passes are likely intercepted against better competition. I’ll grant that Herron looked more comfortable and determined against Troy, but it’s still Troy.

Pryor has two big tests coming up, before he can so much as think about p*nn st*t*. This Minnesota team is scrappy and coming in with a chip on its shoulder. The road trip to Bucky is looming. Let’s see how this offense gels under Pryor’s leadership, and with a little input from Beanie. Let’s see Pryor deliver the ball more cleanly and with less air under it. Let’s see the O-line take control of a game and put us in consistent seconds or thirds-and-short. Then we’ll talk about how “improved” we are.

And all this leaves aside a defense that can’t get to the quarterback, safeties who have trouble helping on time, and an overall scheme or talent level that leaves us painfully vulnerable to passing routes over the middle.

One step at a time, folks.)

  15. Chaoscrusader says:

    FlipBuckeye:

With all due respect, if we do not show any type of spirit we will not be in title game anyway. If we win out we deserve it as much as anyone else. WE the fans have to stop this “Oh shit” mentality which leaves us second guessing everything. The team needs to get out there and perform like they believe in themselves and each other. They need to set the tone every second of every play. They need to have fire in their bellies that if they do not succeed all HELL will rain down up on them. Placating to their sensibilities has on the surface failed. We are in a street fight from here on out… It is time to get nasty! I do not mean nasty as in stupid penalties. I mean nasty as the assassin in “Hitman”, cold hearted, relentless, and executing with brutal efficiency. If things get really nasty and they knock out one of ours, we will knock out two theirs.

I have to stop mixing energy drinks and coffee in the morning… I am too stoked for this game.

  16. mr.green says:

The season is long. Enjoy it. Let’s just win this week’s game and then see what happens.

  17. hello! says:

yeah these bad teams kno how good usc is so they play like its a nat’l title game and at least usc keeps it close. the bucks jus get blown out every time they play a good team.

  18. Chaoscrusader says:

Screw the “let’s just win” mentality, we have been just winning for the three of the last four weeks and having butts kicked for the fourth. If the team wants redemption, they must redeem themselves on every play!!!

  19. jd says:

    USC got dominated.

    Tressel is god.

    Go Bucks!

  20. Chaoscrusader says:

    Amen JD!!!

  21. Brian says:

As far as I am concerned close wins dont count anymore. I am tired of hearing, the oh well a win is a win. This weekend tOSU doesnt beat Minnie by 21 points then its a bad game. I dont want to hear the excuse its only TP’s second game or Beanie wasnt up to par. Our O has the “POTENTIAL” to be great. Our D has the “POTENTIAL” to be great. This week they have to show it. Minnie is going to bring there best. Its tOSU’s job to crush that hope as soon as we walk on the field. No more of this bob and weave BS we do. They need to walk out there with the look of death on there faces.

  22. Joe Fox says:

Maybe OSU will get all “Chico Nelson” on Brewster’s Minions. Here’s hoping.

  23. Juannie says:

Back to Tress vs. Pete…….I noticed Pete was having some very intense conversations with his defensive assistant during the first half. Now I don’t believe it takes an overly bright person to conclude that they were trying to figure out how to stop that little scat back Rodgers. And when running off the field at halftime, Pete seemed to say they were going to make adjustments to stop him and they were going to fix it and be “OK”. Lo and behold, coming out of the half, USC forced some a 3 and out then scored. I was impressed well, at least initally. Point is they made some adjustments at the time that may very well have changed the game around.

In the OSU -USC game Pryor was giving them trouble and again Pete told the ESPN babe, we are going to “clean it up” on his way to the lockerroom. I noted that Pryor was much less efective in the second half.

That’s called making adjustments and “coaching”. I feel we are a slow to adapt like this during games. Sometimes I feel we never find out what is happening and adjust. Anybody else feel this way?

  24. WCT says:

Honestly, the same thought kept running through my head (and was eventually yelled at my television) and I’m sure it was similar to the thought running through all of your heads: Why can THEY (Oregon Freaking State) do this and we can’t?

Why could they protect their QB and we couldn’t? Why could their OL open up holes and OSU’s couldn’t? Why could their QB make good decisions and Boeckman couldn’t? Why could they get pressure on Sanchez and OSU couldn’t?

Last night let me see exactly how bad OSU’s coaching staff really is. Oregon State does not have the talent that OSU does, yet they were able to come up with a game plan to run the ball, pass the ball, and stop USC on defense, and Tressel and his staff were unable to do so. I used to at least take solace in the fact that USC was an unbeatable machine replete with 5-star recruits at every position and atheletes upon atheletes upon atheletes, but thats not the case. They are just like everyone else, but the Bucks couldn’t take advantage when they had the chance.

    Makes me sick.

  25. tampa buckeye says:

Look at it like this. Teams can no longer just say stop the run vs Ohio State and pressure Boeckman he will piss down his leg. Ohio State is much harder to game plan for with a full time Pryor in the game. VS USC Pryor avg. 5 yards a play while Boeckman was a god awful -2.5 a play. None of you thought Boeckman would be as bad as he has been. Really all you have to do is look at his last few games and even the Spring game to know he doesn’t get it and never will. I’m proud to call Pryor Ohio State’s Qb and think he will get us the results we’ve been looking for. Along side of Beanie this offense should be deadly and the D and special teams will be able to feed off the offense.
Having said that did anyone see the comments made by the Minn. player? Something along the lines of we suck and the only player he’s worried about is Beanie. If that doesn’t piss this team off then they truely are a bunch of pussies.

  26. Lance says:

    WCT,

Completely agree with your entire thought process. Why could that OSU do it, while this OSU simply looked overmatched in all areas?

The other thing I conclude is that Beanie definitely would have made a difference in the USC game, (maybe not a win with the OL/DL crapping the bed) but it would have been a diff ball game.

  27. FlipBuckeye says:

Had Beanie been in the game, OSU probably would have scored, let’s say, 10-14 more points… but USC probably would have too. Remember Carroll showed mercy and called off the dogs in the 4th. It’s not like we held them to 35 points.

So it would’ve been a different ball game, but same result and same or even worse deficit.

  28. JBeveridge says:

Last night explained the whole problem with the Buckeyes coaching issues. Why the buckeye nation is blind to Tressel and the staff being outcoached weekly. First off when we pass the ball its always unorganized, we don’t run crossing routes, wr screens, curls, slants etc…. We either run play action bombs or outs 90% of the time. Then on fourth and one maurice wells up the middle seriously there is a reason our assisants now are not in consideration for head coaching jobs. Play calling has not been good for a long time, in our title season of 2002 we almost lost to Bearcats and Thundering Herd that is poor coaching we had 3x the talent. I love the Buckeyes till the end but i am a honest fan and there is a reason Tressel was at a smaller divison school for a long time. We are a much better team off the field with Tressel but on the field we get out coached alot because the talent is there. We do own Michigan under Tress but Michigan is not the goal at OSU now. Since i can remeber if you are a great college coach the NFL shows interest but Tressel does not get any. I am happy with the talent we get, just not the coaching. I hope the players get some attitude and get nasty like a earlier post said. I remeber when our defense was all over the field pre snap we need some of that swagger back and Heacock and the delayed safety blitz or showing the linebacker blitz pre snap is ignorant a blitz should be a surprise. Tired of seing the linebackers on line when blitzing like they are a defensive linemen it does not work. I am ready for the Pryor era to begin and hope the coaching staff adjust to his abilities. I am ready for the Big Ten GO BUCKS
Tress vs Pete….. I would take Pete right now because he coach Tress out of the stadium when we played. He does lose a game to a lesser team but we have had aleast a dozen close calls underneath tress against weaker teams . My biggest problem is its a new era and new schemes, God bless Woody Hayes but that kind of football does not work anymore.

    GO BUCKEYES

  29. Juannie says:

Realisim and these comments suggest maybe Tressel, while being the most upright and wholesome coach I can think of off the field, might use some help on the field. I never see him having animated discussions with his assistants on the sideline or over the headset. Maybe this is because I dont see him constantly during a TV game but it makes me wonder what is going on “in game” and during halftime. We never seem to make adjustments or deviate from the plan, unless it is too late, but mostly not at all. Are the assistants pro-active and providing ideas and input? Or, is JT the overseer and sole decision maker. Is this ever discussed anywhere in press conferences? Are there reports or reporters covering this aspect of his game management?

  30. Stanley Jackson says:

If anybody has a number for Maurice Wells would like him to try out for the semi pro team out of Marion. Could you imgaine a Stanley Jackson Maurice Wells combo we would dominate the semi pro league. Looking for a pass catching TE also, so any for number Ryan Hamby. Thanks

  31. PG says:

I would rather want to see the Buckeyes playing at the Rose Bowl against USC than another trip to the NC. We fans need to come to terms that we’re not one of the elite teams yet (maybe next year and def the year after we will be), and do not deserve a shot at playing for the chip again no matter if USC or whoever before us loses. If we’re the only team left with one loss, then fine I can see us playing for the chip. Any other circumstance, no way.

  32. Buckeye Mom says:

Although I have great respect for Pete, I would rather have Tressel, especially now that he seems to be taking off the gloves and coaching.

  33. Buckeyeblowoutwin says:

I would rather have Pete, no question. I like having Tressel as the coach, don’t get me wrong … he has proven he can recruit and keep us out of big-time trouble (so far anyway)…. that in itself is 90% of college football success (get the kids and do it w/o getting in trouble). And Tressel has mastered that portion of what it takes to win in college football (i.e. we have national championship talent year in and year out and this is done with exactly zero worries that there will ever be a “Lack of institutional control” charge against this coaching staff)

But, Tressel lacks in the game planning department and that has been exposed. People that do not want to agree are kidding themselves. Lets get some Xs and Os guys in here and let Tressel do his thing: somehow rake in top-flight recruiting classes w/o so much as a peep that he is dirty in doing so (since Clarret matter anyway) and lets let some other guys give ti a shot with this talent.

  34. Jim says:

I agree, something needs to be fixed on the coaching end, preparation end play calling end, etc. Tressel has laid an egg in the last three big games he has been in. But to say that Tressel can’t game plan at all as is being alluded to is not very accurate as they were overmatched by Miami and won. They also did not do too shabby against ND and OSU in bowl games. Blame his game planning abilities for the loss to TX and Vince Young but your not being honest if you do. This is a low point in terms of not being able to beat supposedly elite teams but this is still a great time for Buckeye football(look at the last three decades). They are slumping. But remember, a few short years ago we couldn’t beat UM. I know that the bar is set higher but be realistic, the supposed elite teams that you think are ahead of us are no closer to being National Champs than we are(not talking about this year).

Remember Pete Carroll had zero chance at being a National Cahmp the last two years-zero. Tressel is the guy. I’ve heard a lot of Tressel bashing the last few weeks but haven’t heard too many people suggest adequate replacements. I guess Glen Mason and Chris Spielman are still out there.

By the way, Tressel is very loyal to OSU and the State of Ohio that is why you don’t hear a lot of speculation about other jobs though his name is mentioned EVERY time a Browns coach is having trouble, which is quite a lot.

  35. J.B. says:

Tressel without a doubt is the man I want running my program. I have a lot of respect for Surfer Pete, but I wouldn’t replace JT with anyone in the country.

I, like many others, want Tressel to have a better supporting cast which I think Pete has.

My ideal coaching line up for 2009:

    H.C.: JT
O.C: Lane Kiffen ( Also WR Coach )
    D.C: Greg Mattison
Co-D.C: Chris Speilman ( Also Lineback Coach )

  36. Jim says:

Greg M is a good coach but what about Mike Stoops for DC. He has the fire and the track record people are looking for?

  37. J.B. says:

    I don’t know Madison’s situation, but I would be open to Stoops…

Bottom line, If Tressel opens the door for both a posistion as O.C. and D.C., I think he could get anyone in the country. tOSU has the two biggest things a GREAT coach wants… a constent wave of Talent and Exposure.

All Tressel has to do is make the move!

Can you imagine Kiffen as an O.C.? Not only is he proven as an O.C., but he’s got “West Coast” connections and was a GREAT recruiter before going to Oakland. Top that with the fact that he was a head coach in the NFL (No, it wasn’t successful, but until Al Davis retires – Oakland will continue to be a crap hole.) our recruiting would improve – which would be unreal!

There is no reason for us to think that Kiffin or anyother “High Level” guy is “wishful thinking”. Both posistions would be looked at as GREAT opportunities!

  38. TFP says:

Tressel everyday and twice on Saturday. I would rather lose games to Texas, Florida, LSU, and USC than Indiana, Minnesota, and Northwestern. It also appears he is learning something from those big game losses and future coaching changes/philosophies could easily turn him back into a big game coach.

ps-dominating the wolverines kinda rules too!

  39. Buckeyeblowoutwin says:

I would rather not get blow out in those games against LSU, TX, Fl, and USC, though. However, it is right that destroying TTUN is awesome and that is what has forever endeared this coach to these particular Bucks fans of this generation … those of us that went through the 2-10-1 cannot forget how awesome it is owning those bastards.

However, Tressel isn’t that great of an X’s and O’s guy people. The truth is right in front of your face. But, that doesn’t mean he isn’t the guy to run the ship – I think he is perfect as the HC, but calling plays no way. It really isn’t that difficult to see: when the talent is on out side, his gameplan works; when the talent is even or the opposing team has more talent (see USC, LSU, FL) then the gameplan (same one as for all the teams BTW) fails miserably

lets move forward with new hope that productive changes are being made
