It’s Freeday!

Free and Woody in the same sentence?

A&E Home Video was kind enough to hook us up with a box of Woody Hayes’ Ohio State Buckeyes DVDs and since we’re still rocking Betamax, we’re left with no choice but to give them away. We’ll start today with our first contest of the 2008 football season.

We’re getting a little out there this time, but stay with us, this could get fun. To enter, simply leave a comment in this post prior to the contest deadline Sunday evening detailing a trick play you’d like to see drawn-up and executed by the Buckeyes this season. It helps to be as detailed as possible — the situation, players involved, who’s in motion pre-snap, etc.

We’ll review the entries and announce the winner on Monday or Tuesday.

UPDATE: We’ve decided to give away two copies of the DVD — one to each of the top two entries, so keep those entries coming.

The fine print:

  • Must be 18 years-old or older.
  • One entry/comment per person.
  • Your entry/comment must include a valid email address.
  • Deadline for entries is Sunday, August 17th @ 6PM ET.

With 20 yards for the touchdown, the Buckeyes line up in a 5-wide set, with Boeckman taking the snap. Going from left to right, to the left you have Beanie Wells, Brian Robiske, Ray Small in the slot, to the right you have Brian Hartline in the slot to the right, then Terrell Pryor near the sideline. Boeckman sends Ray Small in motion, takes the snap, hands off to Ray Small as he passes by. Small then pitches it to Terrell Pryor on a reverse back to the left side, he pulls up a la Troy Smith, and hits Beanie Wells on a comeback route at the 5 yard line. Beanie breaks the tackle and scores a TD.

you know what, let’s make a cool punting trick play. trapasso is lined up in his normal set, and the line is as usual… OR IS IT

at the snap, trapasso runs like hell over to his right, and as soon as he’s past the line of scrimmage he tosses back to… PRYOR, who has pulled off the right side of the line, and will now run it downfield with trapasso blocking… OR WILL HE

NO, pryor drops back and heaves the ball to… JAKE STONEBURNER, who pulled off HIS man on the left side of the line and is streaking down the sideline. stoneburner pulls in the ball and runs in for the TD, no one even 30 yards near him… OR DOES HE

yeah, he does. and it’s awesome, capping off a 149-0 Ohio State win in the national championship over a team made up of all-star players from the SEC who’ve each been given 50 rounds of steriods and a 9mm glock

-FORMATION - Saine - Wide left, Robiskie - Slot left, Hartline - Wide right, Boeckman - Wide right behind Hartline, Wells - Single back, Pryor under center.
-AT THE SNAP - Robiskie from left to right takes pitch from Pryor, Boeckman from right to left takes pitch from Robiskie, Saine runs a 10 yard crossing pattern, Hartline runs a deep post, Wells steps up to the left to block or release on an inside curl, Robiskie, after pitch to Boeckman, runs a 20 yard post, Pryor, after his pitch to Robiskie, delays and then curls around the left and runs a fly pattern.
RESULT - Safeties step up to cover Hartline, Robiskie, and Saine. Boeckman hits Pryor on the deep ball in stride. TOUCHDOWN!!!

The play is called from the sideline ahead of time and the huddle is broken quickly to get the defense in a hurried set, Pryor is in the TE position on the right like TGII against scUM. Boeckman is in the shotgun with Beanie, Robo is wide left with Small in the slot, and Harltline wide right. Pryor goes in motion and the ball is snapped to him when he is crossing the center and moving left. The o-line breaks off to the left with him. Robo and Small are blocking, Boeckman goes right and waits for the pass back from Pryor. Hartline runs a post, and Beanie runs a wheel route. Pryor tosses the ball back to Boeckman who hits Hartline or Beanie deep, or dumps it to Robo or Small who have released from their blocks and are hovering midfield. Of course, Pryor also has the option of keeping the ball if there is room for a big run…

the eleven players on the field are…

    The Todd
    Robiske
    Hartline
    Cindy Cooper
    Treg Lee
    Chris Jent
    Tha Wiggler
    Karen Holbrook
    Neutron Man
    Bret Michaels
    That Chris Wells Guy

    the situation…

ten seconds left against michigan, ohio state winning by a score of 64-0, ball on their own ten yard line.

the todd comes to center, cindy cooper, in a traditional take-a-knee-and-end-the-game formation. cindy snaps the ball to the todd, then immediately pulls a microphone out of her jock strap and runs off to interview dimitrious stanley. the todd, with the football, begins the kneel-down motion as the michigan defense lets out a long sigh of defeat. but wait, theres more…

the todd snaps back up just before his knee touches the ground, as the offensive formation breaks off into their unexpected routes. the ball is pitched to hartline, who hands it off to a streaking brian robiske. the michigan defense finally realizes what is happening, and stops exposing themselves to girls through living room windows in time to pursue robo.

robo, with chris jent and tha wiggler blocking for him, breaks down the sideline with michigan players hot on his tail. treg lee, trailing from behind, sees bret michaels pouring choclolate sauce on a crackhead-stripper-turned-michigan-football-cheerleaders chest area. treg then rips off brets custom made bandana wig, and uses his own only-clasped-on-one-side early 90s overalls to choke bret to death. treg then makes sweet love to the michigan cheerleader because, hey, big dawgs gotta eat, right?

meanwhile, the michigan defenders are in the process of bring robo down when out of nowhere, that chris wells guy takes the ball from him and calmly glides into the endzone for six. sadly, eight michigan defenders had their heads decapitated due to that chris wells guys stiff arm from hell. rich rodriguez chest bumps zoltan mesko for no reason whatsoever.

game over, buckeyes beat wolverines, final score 70-0. during the post game celebration on the field, the neutron man punches karen holbrook in the throat.

and we all lived happily ever after.

We run man coverage and blitz some linebackers against an SEC team in the championship game……….what? That would totally be a trick play for us!

Guys, you need to give 2 winners in this competition…..1 for best trick play and 1 for best trick play that DOES NOT involve Terrelle Pryor.

Personally, I like the old standby of the QB in motion, direct snap.

Shotgun formation, Pryor at QB (I know, cliche- stay with me here). Beanie offset right behind the tackle.

TP starts his cadence, and then turns to Beanie in confusion (see Todd wouldn’t be confused…). Tress starts hollering at him from the sideline, and TP starts walking toward the sidelines talking with coach about coverages. Once Beanie sees the defense loosen up (expecting a time out), he signals for the snap.

    And the rest is history.

  10. It’s the third quarter of a relatively ho-hum game in East Lansing, Michigan. So far in the game, it’s business as usual for the #7 ranked Buckeyes who have been on a roll ever since suffering a heartbreaking loss in Los Angeles early on in the season. Going into the half, the Buckeyes held a comfortable 17-3 lead, but the Spartans — clearly as a result of some halftime adjustments — drove down the field on the opening possession of the third quarter and scored on a surprisingly uncontested 13 yard slant route.

Suddenly, the Buckeyes are in a dogfight despite good (but not great) performances from all of their major offensive skill players: At the moment, Beanie Wells has 13 carries for 48 yards and a touchdown, and Boeckman is an efficient 11-16 for 103 yards, one touchdown, and an interception (for those of you wondering, Terrelle Pryor had a serviceable half running the ball, but had a costly fumble deep in Spartan territory). As seems to always be the case when the Buckeyes take on the Spartans, Ohio State seems to be vastly outperforming the overachieving Spartans, but the score is closer than what it should be.

Now, following the touchdown and ensuing touchback on the kickoff, the Buckeyes’ offense marches back onto the field for the first time in the half. After an unremarkable three yard run by Chris Wells, Ohio State faces a 2nd and 7 from their own 23 yard line. Out on to the field marches Brandon Saine and Ray Small to replace FB Curtis Terry and TE Rory Nicol. Lining up in a “pony” formation, with Wells and Saine as split backs behind Boeckman under center, Hartline takes his normal spot in the slot to the field side with Ray Small lined up outside. Robiskie takes his spot as the lone receiver to the boundary side. Pre-Snap, Saine motions across the backfield, setting himself up as a wing (similar to the play he made in the MNC game against LSU) to the same side of the field with Hartline and Small. Beanie remains off-set in the Backfield to the field side, meaning that Hartline, Small, Saine, and Beanie are all lined up on one side of the field, with only Robiskie to the boundary.

Upon the snap, a bubble screen to Saine appears to be unfolding, as Saine begins to run back towards the sideline, and Small, Hartline, and Bryant Browning preparing to form blocks downfield. As is usually the case with screens, Browning allowed the defensive end guarding him to run free in order to block downfield, but the end picks up on the supposed screen and begins breaking unblocked toward Saine. Boeckman drops back to throw, but instead throws a pump fake on the screen, and proceeds to hand the ball off to Beanie. As the defense adjusts to the fake and begins to bear down on Wells in the backfield, Beanie tosses a lateral to Boeckman, who has all day to throw a bomb down to a streaking Ray Small for a touchdown. The Buckeyes go on to win the game handily and run the table en route to a revenge Rose Bowl victory over USC.

  11. The Set-up: 1st quarter, 2nd posession v. USC.

Terrelle Pryor (Sorry, its inevitable) enters the game, but not as a QB. He splits furthest of three WR to the right. Robiskie is split out to the left. Boeckman takes the snap and zips it to TP on a bubble screen.

    The play: 3rd quarter/early 4th quarter.

Same formation, same play except TP takes a backward pass from TB, loads up and heaves one deep to Robiskie on a post route. SIX! We take the lead and never look back.

Ok, it’s the 4th quarter with 30 seconds to go and OSU is trailing USC by 3 at their own 40. Boeckman is QB, Beanie is in the backfield on the left and Saine is on the right. Pryor is in the slot position on the right, Hartline is split out wide to the right, and Robiske is split out wide to the left at the top of your screen. The ball is snapped and Boeckman fakes a throw to Pryor who then does a slant to the middle, Beanie crosses to the right hitting the tackle hole as Boeckman fakes him the ball, Saine crosses to the left and hits the tackle hole as Boeckman fakes him the ball, Hartline does a fly pattern down the right and Robiske does a fly pattern at the top of the screen and Boeckman hits Robo for the score and OSU wins and USC cries.

Line up arena football style with Beanie, Saine, and Pryor in the backfield. Beanie/Saine can stay to pass block, run, or act as safety values to dump the pass off to. The best thing about this is that you have strong run/pass ability with the same formation. It spreads the field and makes the defensive lineman win the game. BTW, this is a legal formation with at least 8 people eligible to run the ball.

Tressel decides to go for a 2 point conversion in the first OT period for the win against USC. Nobody on the defense realizes that only 10 men are in the huddle. The Buckeyes line up in a power I formation and everyone in the stadium knows it is going to the eventual Heisman trophy winner Beanie Wells for the score (and win).

The ball is snapped from Cordle to Boeckman……fakes it to Beanie, and the defense bites on the fake. Nobody had realized that just off of the sideline, in fair territory was Tyson Gentry in his wheelchair. He had motorized his wheelchair in the endzone just in time for a floating pass from Boeckman to land safely in his lap. The crowd (in the Coliseum) is absolutely stunned. The place falls silent……for just a moment. Then when they realize what just happened, not a dry eye was in the stadium.

I vote for the A-11 set-up. The offensive line consists of a center and a tight end on either side of him - a three-man line, in other words. Three wideouts (Robo, Small and Schwartz) on the far left, and three wideouts on the far right (Hartline, Washington and Sanzenbacher). Both wideout sets have the middle wideout just off the line of scrimmage. in an inverted chevron set (or “trips,” if you prefer). Behind center are two quarterbacks - Boeckman and Bauserman, or Boeckman and Pryor - in a shotgun set, seven yards behind the center, and offset just to the left and right, respectively.

You can do anything you want from this formation. Terrelle can run an option using a tight end inside, or a wideout in motion, for a pitchman. The defense is as spread as spread can be, and cannot be certain just which quarterback is going to get the ball. In fact, either quarterback can get the ball, then toss it to the other, as many times as they like, using a lateral.

I’d like to see it run in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma in the title game, on a key third-and-four from the Sooners’ 29. Sanzenbacher and Hartline run opposing crossing patterns, picking off the safeties. Washington and Robiskie run post patterns, drawing both corners and a very confused linebacker or two. Small and Schwartz run 15-yard out patterns, drawing another couple of linebackers. The ball goes to Boeckman, who fakes a pitch to Pryor. Terrelle is buried by two defensive lineman, which permits an unnoticed Jake Ballard to run freely downfield - right down the bloody middle - and score, sealing a 27-17 win for Ohio State.

One Youngstown boy goes home sad, another goes home batting .500 in title games.

    Go Bucks!!!

Ohio State vs. Michigan….. 4th quarter score Mich 20 OSU 16 1 minute to go. OSU on the Mich 9 2nd down and 5. 1 timeout left. OSU is undefeated with several close wins at USC, Wisc, and Illinois. A win seals another BCS championship game for Tressel and the boyz.

Boeckman lined up at QB in a spread wide formation… No one in the backfield-Pryor, Beanie, and Saine all in at receiver positions with Brian and Brian. Motion… alot of shifting at the line, and it’s a direct snap to Pryor who is the reciver closest to Boeckman’s right and Beanie is now the lead Blocker for Pryor– one man to beat and he is decimated by Beanie as Pryor scrambles in for the game winning TD against Michigan. Pryor then grabs an Orange and kisses it for the ABC camera!

  22. First and ten at our own 30, we break the huddle with trips left (Robo - Beanie - Washington) single wide right (Hartline) with Saine as the single back offset right. Pre-snap, Saine motions towards the LOS and then out to the right. Just as Saine gets as wide as Hartline we get the snap and the greatest play in CF history unfolds. Beanie steps back and turns back towards the center of the field, The Todd takes a one step drop and rifles the ball to Saine on the right who catches and heads back to the center of the field. The reverse to Beanie is beginning to take shape. As the Saine and Beanie cross in the middle of the back field they make a smoothe exchange, but it is not an exchange of the ball…as the two backs seperate the crowd and defense are made weak kneed by the amount of blood pooring on the field as they discover that Beanie has not received the ball from Saine, but instead has ripped off his right arm and flipped it to Saine. Saine, ball in the right arm and Beanies deadly stiff arm in his right hand, scampers down the left sideline bludgeoning Bulldog defenders one by one into the end zone for JT’s second BCS title. Freshman QB TP is waiting in the end zone and takes Beanie’s arm, sprints back downfield and reattaches the severed limb in time for Beaine to take a direct snap and run in for a two point conversion to cap a 36-0 victory.

It’s Thursday, January 8th, 2009. As the clock ticks towards midnight, Ohio State is engaged in an epic battle against the Oklahoma Sooners on a rainy, soggy evening in Miami. Terrelle Pryor has performed admirably in place of Todd Boeckman, who sustained a left knee injury on a late hit by Austin English midway through the 2nd quarter. Oklahoma leads the Buckeyes 24-20 with 5 seconds left in the 4th quarter. It’s 4th and goal at the four yard line. OSU lines up with Trips Right with Hartline, Robiskie and Small arranged in that same order from left-to-right. The ball is on the left hash mark and Pryor is in the shotgun with Brandon Saine set just to Pryor’s right. Cordle snaps it to Pryor, Hartline runs a slant route, Robiskie does a hook pattern, Small runs an out route and Nicol briefly blocks on the right and releases on a delay fade route. Saine stays in the backfield to block. Terrelle Pryor fires a pass to the right side of the endzone…No…WAIT! He handed it off to Saine behind his back…It’s the old Statue of Liberty! Saine scampers to the left pylon and dives towards it…TOUCHDOWN BUCKEYES! Saine immediately gets up and throws the ball into the stands and Alex Boone leapfrogs him as he is mobbed by hundreds. There is no time left. No PAT attempt. Final score: Ohio State 26, Oklahoma 24. The Sooners are burned yet again by the Statue of Liberty play and Bob Stoops looks stunned. Saine runs into the crowd to where his family and friends are sitting. He gets down on one knee and proposes to his high school sweetheart. She accepts. Late into the evening, Saine’s cellphone rings. He answers it. It’s Ian Johnson of Boise State. Johnson says “You stole my script, man.” Saine replies “No, I didn’t steal it…I improved it.”
