Buckeye NFLer Of The Week - 8

Matt VrabelAP Photo/Winslow Townson

This week's Buckeye NFLer is Mike Vrabel of the New England Patriots. The Patriots remain undefeated and continued their domination of the NFL by creaming the Washington Redskins in their own backyard, 52-7.

Vrabel totaled 13 tackles (11 solo), 3 QB sacks, and forced 3 fumbles. All 3 of Vrabel's sacks attributed to fumbles by the 'Skins QB, Jason Campbell.

It would not be a good idea to dress up like Mike Vrabel and show up at the Campbell residence for Halloween. Not only would it scare Campbell to death, but he could very likely drop the bowl of candy to give out to the other beggars.

Vrabel's week 8 defensive stats were good enough to win the Buckeye NFLer Award alone. But once again, Mike contributed on both sides of the ball. Vrabel caught a 2nd quarter, 2-yard TD pass from Tom Brady. This was Mike's 10th career TD catch and his 2nd of the 2007 season.

Vrabel's 2 TD receptions for 2007 ties him for 5th in the league for TD receptions by a TE. Not bad for a linebacker.

Thanks, Brian. I have no idea why, but to this day I still mix up Mike Vrabel & Matt Finkes' first names. And Finkes hasn't even played in awhile. I used to always say "Mike" Finkes & "Matt" Vrabel. And apparently, I still do.

I have loved watching Vrabel play ever since he was handing out smackdowns as part of that great mid-90's defense at OSU. You know, they one that man-handled the unbeatable Jake "The Snake" Plummer and took his lunch money...?

My wife and in-laws are from New England and are huge Patriots fans. Every time my Father-in-Law starts raving about Tom Brady, I always point out the stuff Mike is pulling off on both sides of the ball. Like this past Sunday, when Brady was getting his 28th-30th passing TDs of the season. Vrabel goes out and has a game like he had.

Or in the Super Bowl against the Carolina Panthers, when Brady got the MVP. I said then and still maintain that Vrabel should have gotten that award for his performance. He had 6 tackles, of which 4 were solo and 2 were sacks. One of the sacks forced Carolina QB Delhomme to fumble and resulted in the first New England TD on the ensuing drive; in what was a tough defensive first half where there were no points being put up. Then Mike also had his second career TD reception in that game as well...

I'm not saying Brady is bad... But since he's from Michigan, I just like to remind my Father-in-Law that there's a really great OSU player on the team too... :)
