After narrowly missing out on its first win of the season against Miami last night, the Ohio State men's hockey team took to the ice for a rematch with the RedHawks this evening. Unfortunately the result was another loss. Penalty trouble doomed the Buckeyes, though they did get their first goal from the freshman class as well as another good outing in net by Matt Tomkins.

Action was fairly even throughout the first period, but Miami edged the Buckeyes with effective special teams. OSU came up empty on the game’s first power play. The RedHawks got the next two advantages. They converted once, Josh Melnick scoring with assists from Jack Roslovic and Anthony Louis. It was the first goal surrendered by the Ohio State penalty killers which began the season a perfect 7-for-7.

Buckeye freshman Mason Jobst evened the score early in the second period. The goal was the rookie’s first collegiate tally. It was also the first point recorded by Ohio State’s freshman class. Miami responded with increasing pressure on the OSU net but Matt Tomkins, making his third consecutive start, was equal to the task. The junior netminder was stellar in turning aside chance after RedHawk chance.

Miami kept the pedal to the floor though. Eventually Jack Roslovic forced a turnover, split the defense, and put one by Tomkins. It was the second time the Columbusian burned the Buckeyes this week. However, on the whole, Tomkins did a great job of limiting the damage in a period where the RedHawks outshot OSU 19-12.

Ohio State began the third period behind the eight ball. The Bucks, still down a goal, faced nearly five full minutes of penalty killing after an unwise hit by Tyler Lundey resulted in a major Miami power play. Zach LaValle used the advantage to stretch the RedHawks' lead to 3-1 which would be one more goal than the Brotherhood needed.

Tomkins stopped 38 of 41 shots in the game. His counterpart, Ryan McKay turned aside 26 of 27. Ohio State was 0 for 3 on its power play chances. Miami converted twice in five tries.

The road gets even tougher for Ohio State next week as the Buckeyes hit the road for a visit to defending NCAA champ and current No 2 Providence. The Friars, off this week, go into the series with an undefeated 2-0-1 record.

Women’s Hockey Swept by No. 1 Minnesota

Minnesota stormed out of the gate this afternoon. The Gophers outshot Ohio State 21-4 in the opening frame. Three of those shots found the back of the net.

Dani Cameranesi struck first, cashing in as her team swarmed the Buckeye net. Kate Schipper was credited for Minnesota’s second goal. The Buckeyes were victims of a bad bounce which pinged off the end wall and the back of OSU goalie Alex LaMere before falling in for a score. Brook Garzone chipped in Minnesota’s third tally at the 8:54 minute mark.

The Scarlet and Gray got a break late in the period. The Bucks went on their first power play opportunity of the contest. And, just as they did yesterday, the Buckeyes conjured some last minute magic. With just 15 ticks left on the clock Julianna Iafallo put Ohio State on the board.

Unfortunately the Gopher onslaught resumed in the second stanza. Quick strikes by Hannah Brandt and Milica McMillen put Minnesota back in command. Brandt would add another goal later in the period. Then a Cameranesi breakaway put the Gophers up 7-1.

That goal put an end to LaMere’s afternoon. Selena Hunter took her place in the Buckeye net. She did not emerge from the game unscathed either as Caitlin Reilly increased Minnesota’s lead with a power play goal. Kelly Pannek made it 9-1 Gophers with seconds to go in the middle period.

Brandt completed a hat trick in the third period. Overall she recorded six points in today’s contest, three goals and three assists. Reilly notched a second goal in the frame as well.

Obviously you don’t need me to tell you this was not a good outing for the Buckeyes. About the only positive thing you can draw from today’s game is that OSU converted two of its four power play opportunities. Iafallo got the early tally and Claudia Kepler knocked one home late in the game.

The Buckeye ladies regroup and prepare for Minnesota State next week. They will face the 2-5-1 Mavericks in a Friday-Saturday series. Note that these games are scheduled to be played at the Schott instead of the Ice Rink.
