Although Ohio State finished this season with the same record (11-2) that it finished each of the last two seasons with, that record resulted in a lower ranking this year as the Buckeyes were just one of 10 Power 5 teams that finished the season with two losses or fewer. Ohio State was the only one of those teams to end the season with back-to-back losses, falling to Michigan and Missouri in its last two games of the year, and the Buckeyes finished as the lowest-ranked of those teams as a result.
Even with the drop in the rankings, Ohio State continued its streak of finishing in the top 10 in the AP poll in all 10 years of the College Football Playoff era. The only other school to accomplish that feat is Alabama, which has now finished in the top 10 of the AP poll for 13 straight years.
Ohio State also finished 10th in the final Coaches Poll of the season.
