Ryan Day took to the airwaves Monday via Buckeye Roundtable for his latest update on Ohio State's program.

With a matchup against Western Kentucky awaiting the Buckeyes Saturday, Day discussed the matchup with the Hilltoppers, where Ohio State made its biggest improvements from Week 1 to Week 2 and how the transfer portal has adjusted the way coaching staffs prepare for teams.

Here's what Day had to say:

  • On where Ohio State made the biggest jump Week 1 to Week 2: "I thought we, overall, executed a little better on offense. ... The passing game had a little more crispness to it and the protection was good."
  • Day feels that it's important for players to show improvements in practice before applying it to the field on game days. "Denzel Burke is a good example of that, somebody who's practiced very well. ... How you practice is typical to how you play, your training. So that's why we've got to have another good week of work this week."
  • The transfer portal has increased the amount of scheme variation year-to-year for teams, Day said. With more players coming through the portal, there's more roster turnover and more adjustments for coaching staffs to make based on the talent they have.
  • On Tyleik Williams and the team's defensive tackles: "I think our interior defensive linemen are doing a better job using their hands, and because of that they're getting off blocks and making more plays."
  • On Western Kentucky: "On both sides of the ball, they challenge you schematically. ... On offense, they spread you out, they have a really good quarterback. ... It'll be a really good challenge for us on defense. Then on offense, a lot of different packages, a lot of different looks (from Western Kentucky's defense)."
  • Reviewing Ohio State's practice schedule week-to-week, Day said that Monday is a day for the players to ease in and review film, followed by first and second-down work on Tuesday, third-down and red zone work on Wednesday then a lighter day Thursday before walkthroughs Friday and the game on Saturday.
