Another day, another update – or non-update – on Buckeye signal-callers.

Ohio State’s ongoing journey to name a starting quarterback has continued through Monday of its first game week, as head coach Ryan Day declined to name a starter during his weekly call-in to the Ohio State Sports Network’s Buckeye Roundtable show Monday.

That said, Day did speak about how the competition between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown has pushed both players, forcing them to get as much as possible out of every rep.

“They have to bring it every day,” Day said. “When you have somebody that you’re competing against every day in practice, it brings out the best in you, because you can’t take a play off, every play matters.”

Day referenced comments made several years ago by former Ohio State and current New Orleans Saints linebacker Pete Werner, who set the example for the level of competition Day wants to see from his players every day.

“During Senior Tackle one year, Pete Werner said that one of the things he wanted to make sure he left in terms of legacy was that every play matters. Every rep matters,” Day said. “He was so right about that, and we use that a lot around here.”

Some other quick notes from Day’s appearance on the show:

  • Day opened his call-in by saying that the team wants to go on the road and play “good, fundamental football” in Week 1. “This year we have to win a bunch of games on the road, so no better place to start than a conference game on the road.”
  • On playing against a lot of transfers in the Indiana game: “It’s hard to figure out how they fit into the scheme, and what adjustments they will make to the scheme.”
  • When the looks from a defense are uncertain, Day said it’s important to have contingency plans if you get different calls than expected from the opposition. Such an approach is typical of a first game, he added.
  • “We’ve been preparing for a long time, so we’re excited to get into game week mode.”
